    Default Problems with parents

Hey everyone. I have been wanting to start dancing for about 6 months now and I have tried every way possible to ease my parents into the idea. At first I brought up me being a stripper in a joking way (only I wasn't joking), to see their reactions. They freaked out. Then I went to a club and worked as a shot girl for a night before my dad said that if i ever worked in that kind of environment again I was going to be kicked out of the house. I am 18 and an only child and my parents keep close tabs on me. However, I think I may have found a way around them. I was just hired at a restaurant working from 7pm-3am. I am thinking maybe I should take that job for a month or so and wait for everything to get situated and there suspisions to die down, then quit and go back to the club. Do you guys think this would work? and how would I go about taking care of my taxes?

honestly i think it would be very hard to be living with your parents and not have them find out youre dancing. i didnt live with mine til almost a year into it, and it was only for 2 months when i did, but they found out. i hid it for a year and then they weren't buying the bartending thing anymore.

you say they keep close tabs on you.. well where will you keep your stripper clothes/shoes? and what happens when they want to come to this restaurant where youre working? or they ask to see the uniform? how come its never in the laundry and youre not leaving in a waitress uniform? etc.

Um, I think it would work for a short amount of time. How old are you? Moving out was the only sure-fire way I was able to hide it from my parents.

I don't think it will work, and furthermore I don't see why you need to dance while you are still living on your parents dollar.

Move out and dance, or enjoy the free ride while you can.

Also, your parents are most likely still claiming you as a dependent, making it impossible for you to claim your dance money on taxes accurately and have them not find out about it. In fact, if you did your parents might find themselves in a world of trouble.

You can either be a child and let your parents support you and live according to their rules, or you can be a grownup and move out and support yourself in the fashion you choose. Their house, their rules. Sneaking around like that while you live on their dollar is not a good idea and it'll just lead to a big mess.

When I lived with my parents (NOT dancing) they were up in my business at all times. I worked at effing Chick Fil A and if I came home and didn't smell like waffles fries and chicken nuggets, I got the 3rd degree. My mom would check my car, my room, all kinds of stuff. She was trying to 'catch' me doing things. It was one of the main reasons I moved out before I got out of high school.

It's going to be hard to hide dancing from your parents and still live with them, especially if you think they keep tabs on you. You have to decide what is more important to you-living independently making money your way, or living under their roof on their dime living the way they want.

Thank you for all the help everyone. I really appreciate it. I am still a little confused as to how dancers go about claiming their taxes in the first place. Can someone please clarify that and also how I could claim my taxes while still living with my parents...is that even possible? Thank you. xox

so you're not going to listen to the part about how you claiming taxes like that could get your parents in trouble? sigh.

dollar den would be your best bet for that question. you can find it by searching.

    Double sigh.

Not saying this to be mean, but maybe being 18 is part of the reason she isn't really thinking about what her actions can do to affect others. I didn't give a shit about anybody but myself when I was 17-18.

Well i really don't want to get my parents into trouble. I was just wondering if there was a way to claim the taxes so they wouldn't, but i guess there isn't I won't do it if it puts them at risk.

^You should search around dollar den. But, this is another reason why you'd have to move out. If you started doing your own taxes and claiming yourself as a dependent, your parents would know what was up. If you moved out, your parents wouldn't be claiming you as a dependent.

I know that if I lived with my parents, I could hide it. But parents are totally clueless and lost in their own world. I know that if you were my daughter, there is no way in hell that you could hide it from me!

there is no way you can accurately file your taxes while your parents are still claiming you as a dependent. If you file them anyway and your parents file their taxes as usual they stand a big risk of an audit.

Don't dance while still living at your parents house. It'd be one thing if they were cool with it, but you know they won't be. During a break from college I danced for about 2 months living with my parents when I was 19, and it's NOT worth the risk. They didn't know, and it was hell trying to come up with lies, not to mention how guilty and sad I felt for doing something they thought was very wrong while living under their roof. If they would have found out, it would have been the ultimate slap in the face heartbreak. Trust me, move out before you do this job. Imagine what hell your parents can probably make your life if they find out (since you are still dependent on them). Take the waitressing job, work overtime, and save money to get your own place. As soon as you do, you'll feel much better about considering stripping.

Don't file taxes independently unless you are SURE your parents are not claiming you. They can still claim you EVEN IF YOU MOVE OUT. My parents claimed me up until I was 21, even though I was no longer under their care (but went to college). Until they no longer see you as a dependent, I wouldn't worry about filing.

Have you considered that when you try dancing, you might not like it? Why bother telling your parents now?

I agree, however, that if you strip, you need a place of your own. If you decide that you like stripping, you must honor your parents by moving out ASAP.
