    Default Computer Nerds...Help a Shell..

My computer is sucking ass. See, whats happening is it isn't recognizing the battery cord. I know its not the cord cause I tried another identical one of my friends that works fine on hers. It will recognize the cord for a little while then it will switch to battery power, and I'll have to twist the cord and hold it there for a bit and it will recognize it then five seconds later its saying its not plugged in again. What do I doooo?

Sorry to bring this back on topic...

I have the same problem sometimes, where the computer is plugged into the wall and should be charging the battery, but if I move the slightest bit it will switch to discharging the battery instead.

What I usually do is shut down the computer...it will then recognize the power cord again and start charging the battery. Then I start the computer again and it goes back to working off the wall outlet and charging the battery.

It's a "duct tape" solution but I get by.

Ok, since I'm a big Hannah fan and pooka needs help, I'll suggest getting a new power supply. they're very easy to find on Ebay and usually $20 or less shipped. I had to get one for my son's PC and it worked like a charm. Oh yea, I work in software and computers and have for 20 years, so I know a little about them.
Worth a try! If your friend's power supply works better than yours, than yea, that's it. Order a new one and you're good to go.

The battery will never be an issue when it's plugged in. When the plug is in, the battery really isn't noticed by the PC. When it's UNPLUGGED is when the PC pays attention to the battery.

Sometimes the contact on the power cord and/or the notebook get messed up due to using the notebook on a bed or couch or something like that.

    Hope this helps.........

    I don't think it's your battery either.

Probably your power supply, which will require a replacement at some point.

I once offered you a battery, but you have a PC and the extra battery I had was for an Apple.

If you ever switch to Apple, Pooka, I've got you covered

BTW: I hope you are loving San Antonio. Houston misses you.

You can still use the laptop on your bed. try unplugging it more and then re-plugging in when the battery gets low. the connection to the PC can get damaged as it's designed to be on a flat surface. plus, $20 ain't bad to replace the power supply.

Pooka looks very hot. Hannah IS hot. Love when she's working and I'm lucky enough to be there. Wish I lived in Michigan..

What do you mean by tried a different power cord?

If I am getting the right picture after your last post, then the transformer may be dying. There is little connector that you plug into the back of the laptop. A thin cable runs from this connector and goes into a rectangular box. The power cord is connected to that box. Correct?

The box is the transformer. Replacing that MAY solve your problem. Hope this helps. Take care....

P.S. - I don't want to appear off topic so I will close by stating that everyone is pretty damn cute...

Check all your connections, wall to power souce, power source to laptop, make sure everything is nice and tight.

    #1 Problem is loose connection

#2 Problem if it is bad with another ac adaptor, your DC jack may be busted. That is the bit you plug it into in the laptop.

What I'd suggest is to find someone that knows their way around a multi meter and see if they can test the power supply for you. If that works, then you'll need a new DC jack.

You do not want to get into a new dc jack.... I paid about $AUD40 for labor, and $AUD5 for parts. But ima tech guy and took my laptop apart so the guy with the solder gun, only had to do a couple of minutes work. I had to have both DC jack and connector on laptop fixed.

I was quoted anywhere from $AUD200+ for parts to $AUD400.

I could not belive how some of the guys I talked to insisted the mother board had to be replaced, when it was only a 5 dollar set of connectors....

I had that happen once. I took it all apart and on the inside there was a little box that had the hole that the power cord plugs into. The bottom of that box had a little metal contact on it that was supposed to be sitting on this little metal contact below it, but the little feet that were supposed to be holding it down had broken off. I fixed it with superglue.

Another time the same thing happened and I thought it was the same problem, but it was really my cord. Woops.

It might be that....^^^ Because I tried a different cord that was identical to mine because my friend and I have the same computer and hers didnt work either.

^^ What she said, and you were very lucky superglue worked, sometimes is actually inhibits the flow of electricity.

Had the same problem. It was the power jack on the back. Fortunately, Dell repaired it under warranty
