I'm fostering a cat from a local shelter and I noticed blood in it's stool, now there isn't an emergency number to contact them so what do I do with this poor creature?

Cats can have sometimes blood in their stool.. it doesn't necessarily mean there's something terribly wrong. It might have intestinal parasites, like worms, and "deworm" pills might fix it. On the other hand, sometimes dry or hard stool causes slight internal bleeding, in that case make sure the cat gets enough water.
If the problem persists, you should have a vet take a smear.. the cat might have a bacterial infection that causes colitis, which can lead to blood in the stool.

Oh. Thanks. Well I'm going to take him to the shelter tomorrow. I emailed the shelter and said if they got it before midnight to call me but I'm so tired I want to sleep. He seems fine, just still under my bed, he's been here only for a few days. Can stress cause it? Cause my cat, Peanut ain't happy he's here, she flips out but this is why he's in my room and she can't go in.

Well, stress doesn't help the situation, but shouldn't cause it.. on the other hand, if it came out of the shelter, a change of diet might have something to do with it. As long as the cat doesn't vocally complain about pain, or seems to weak to stand, everything should be fairly okay. Cats are hardy... one of mine had feline leukemia and was going to die in a matter of six month... that was 6 years ago..

Ohhhh. Well he seems to be breathing ok but he really hasn't done anything but hide under my bed, today he was on my bed but I don't know him well. He's been at this shelter for, well 5 years! poor thing so I felt bad. ugh now I have to take him back way before schedule when he's finally warming up to me and letting me pet him but he needs to be checked. Thanks. I am off to bed then.

Is he eating /drinking/peeing too much or not enough? How long has this been going on?

The culprit is possible parasites which can be treated easilt. OR she could have gotten into something....in whihc case..she needs to get to a DR ASAP.

No he's eatting and drinking normally, I just saw the blood last night. I'm taking him to the shelter, they never called or answered but I need for them to check on Mathias. He has a sad face, no matter what look at this poor cat...

HE finally began to trust me, now if I go to pet him he doesn't hiss but rubs on my hand. He doesn't run away fast if I come in the room, all that is going to be ruined but his health is more important.

This is off subject, but tell me about this fostering cats from a shelter thing... I'd love to do that because I love kitties but I'm not sure if I want to own one for ten years (or however long they live). How long do you keep them? Do you get to pick them?

I think you should take the kitty to the vet. If youi take him to the shelter they will probably not give him any health care at all. Remember most shelters, even the no kill ones, are running on a very, very tight budget. You agreed to be his foster mom so I think you ahould just find the money to take him to the vet. Here is a site that will help you find a good vet in your area http://www.aahanet.org/ .

Well if you had blood in your shit...

would you want to see a doctor?

how long would you want to wait for treatment?

Woah chill people, this is a no kill shelter with a vet on call. I had called Animerge, the hospital and they told me to monitor him and then take him in. He was eating, drinking and acting normal. When I called in the AM and told them what had happened they said to bring him in and I did, the vet was there doing her rounds and I took the stool with me so they could test it.

They also asked me to watch out for certain things when I called the hospital for signs of a more serious condition. I also recommended that they have an emergency number for the people who would foster animals just in case something like this happens again.

Ok about the fostering, you go to your local shelter and ask about fostering. You can foster a cat, 2 a dog or how ever many you can and they allow for 4 weeks. They give you food and supplies and if something happens medically they take care of it.

Oh you get to pick the pet if available, if not for example this one he's been there for a long time, so they wanted him to become more social.

I just called to check on him and he is neg for worms, and 2 possibilities, he either strained too hard or he was nervous. Since he isn't used to being in a home he might of still been scared. They will call me tomorrow to let me know if I can continue fostering or if another lady that was taken with him will adopt, I hope the lady adopts him cause he is so sweet.

So he's ok! yay!!! Sorry about telling you to chill but I did double check with the emergency hosp on the phone last night but I didn't post an update.

I didn't mean to be rude. Thank you for your help.
