Default Hair getting long, driving me insane.

I've been letting my hair grow and it's finally getting somewhere (almost down to the bra strap), BUT it's getting caught everywhere-under my shoulder/boy's shoulder when I sleep, collar of my hoodie, under my back when doing ld's. And now it's breaking off/splitting at the ends! I think all this catching is making it break. Any hints, or do I just have to get used to it? Any natural stuff I can use to keep it from breaking so much?

I color with henna, and don't use any chemically based products if I can help it (I do use that Cholesterol stuff). I use a curling iron or straightener maybe three times a week, and sparlingly at that.

Oh dear.....it sound like you need a trim. It's breaking off probably due to split ends and "old" age. Also, heat from irons and straighteners can cause breakage even if you use them one time. I head tons of breakage from blow drying my hair once. I'm only getting over that nonsense now...
I use pantene http://www.pantene.com/jsp/product/index.jsp?pdId=185 shampoo & conditioner. It works like a charm and keeps my hair soft and strong. I have pretty fine hair and I don't find it to be too heavy. Go a month with out heat on your hair and see if that helps anything. As far as getting caught everywhere... Welcome to my nightmare. Heheheh....

My hair's much longer than yours - trust me when I say you may not actually need a trim.

Try a re-application of henna or cassia to just your ends to help seal up the cuticle. After that, ever day - at least once, maybe twice - put jojoba oil on your ends. You're off to a great start by using henna and no chemical products.

If you want hair long you have to treat it delicately - ditch all the heat products. Wear it up most of the time, although I know we can't at work. Keep the ends tucked into a bun or french twist. Sleep in braids. Sleep on a satin pillowcase. Stop using combs with seams. Buy a boar bristle brush. Don't wash in super hot water - use cold if you can stand it.

I could go on forever. But basically, remember that hair that's 24 inches long (bra strap) is four years old. That's four years of ripping seamed combs through it. Four years of heat styling. Four years of letting the ends drag wherever, getting caught in things, etc. Four years of steaming showers.

Long story short, try the oil. If it doesn't work, get a trim - and then start taking care of your hair. Nothing looks worse than hair that's long and ratty. You're investing the time to grow it, take good care of it!

Mine is way too long right now and I'm in the midst of looking for a new stylist who will be able to give me the cut I want. It looks like this, but I want it shoulder length. That would take about six inches off of my hair. I can't wait!

BTW, once you get past bra strap and it's around mid back, it will be easier for you to manage - as long as you are careful around doors you will find it gets caught in things less.

Then knee length hits and it happens all over again. LOL. But by then you'll be used to managing your hair.

Braid it when you sleep... or pile it on the top of your head. Sleep with satin pillow cases and keep it braided when your not at work. My hair is fairly longish now and im aiming for my ass... I condition it daily, never use heat styling and let it air dry and its staying healthy. I use treseme shampoo/conditioner. I never use gels or sprays... I hate styling products lol.

Ignore the messy room ahaha... yay hotels Its not THAT long yet but I love it

For breakage and split ends I suggest a trim. Don't brush your hair while it is wet
this can cause breakage, all ways brush from the bottom up of course.
    A good moisturizing treatment:
    JOICO K-PAC or Redken ButterTreat

You will find tons of tips on LongHairCommunity.com

My hair is about 3 inches past bra strap, this is what I do:

    - wear hair up whenever possible and always while sleeping
    - heat style as little as possible
    - do EVOO treatments for an hour on my hair before washing (sooo soft!)
    - shampoo and condition gently, don't pile it up on your head
    - use cool water instead of hot water (doesn't have to be cold, just cool)
    - shampoo as little as possible, sometimes doing conditioner only
    - use a wide tooth comb gently to detangle when your hair is wet

Also, Lush makes a shampoo that has a small bit of henna in it and is meant to keep your color nice and fresh-looking, so you aren't having to constantly re-henna it.

what do you mean by 'don't pile it up'? How are you supposed to do? Thanks!

Instead of piling your hair on the top of your head to wash it kind of massage the shampoo/conditioner through your hair running it down(does this make sense?).

Tons of great advice-thanks! After years of having really short, choppy hair, it's hard to get used it being sorta long. Nowere near as long as Cally's though-wow! I have a goal! I am totally guilty of hot water washing and sleeping with my hair all over the place. And I've been using the curling iron a lot to blend my hair with my clip ins. So... starting with braiding my hair before bed.

Without SW, I swear I'd look a mess.

Actually, women (or men) who have long hair and pull their hair back all the time have been found to have receding hairlines sooner than if they didn't do it. If you are going to pull your hair back, it should be pulled back loosely. Repeatedly pulling it back into a tight style will only encourage your hair to fall out prematurely.

Ahaha yea I meant to say a loose braid.

Im guilty of wearing my hair tied back fairly tight because when I come off stage im so hot and icky I just pull it into a bun but I don't leave it tied back tight for long periods of time. When im not working I have it tied back in a loose braid or low pony tail.

I'd keep it braided or up except for when I was dancing (if you do). Mine is that length now and I just braid it or keep it up. I braid it most of the time at night now.

Okay it's been almost two weeks, and the braiding does make a huge difference, especially in the morning-so much less brushing/detangling needed. I did get a teeny trim. Haven't quite gotten the hang of the jojoba oil with out making the rest of my hair slimy, but it looks great! And I haven't used the curling iron at all. The only prob is that I need to get clip ins with a looser wave to match my natural hair instead of curling to blend, but mine are pretty trashed anyway. Let's hope the breaking stays at bay!
