    Default Muscle heavier than fat?!?

    Im really really pissed off.

I am 5ft 6, a UK size 10-12 which is curvy but I like it. I have 460ccs of implants, I run for 25mins at speed 8.0 and incline 2.0. Followed by 30 mins of cross trainer, HIIT and 30-40 mins of weight training - legs one day , back, arms etc eah different day. With 400-500 sit ups on abs. This work out routine I do, 4 days a week. Then I work / dance 6/7 nights a week.

I was 10 stone I an now 11.5!!!?? How the fuck?

Its not diet - I avoid potato, white bread, pasta and rice. If I get my carbs its from wholemeal stuff. I tend to eat soup, I eat only white meat - never red. Normally pan seared tuna, or oven roasted salmon, or oven chicken, or turkey sausages. I rarely use sauces as I know they are laden with fat. Lots of veg, not so much fruit which I suppose is a bit naughty.

so where the hell had 1.5 stone come from in the space of a year of hard working out and healthy eating?!?!

I want to cry, or go and spend shit loads on surgey. I am actually on a BMI as moderately obese!

    Help?!?!

your title kinda answers it.. muscle weighs more than fat. and the actual number of your weight doesnt matter as much as how you look.

Pound for pound (or stone for stone), muscle takes up much less space than fat. A friend of mine who used to weigh less than me by ten or fifteen pounds took up jujitsu competitively; she's now tinier than before but as heavy as me.

I mean it sounds like you're in incredible shape (your workouts are AWESOME!) I do know, though, how it feels to see something like "moderately overweight" and have that nag you for a while. that's why I suggest you go and get your body fat measured via calipers or in the water (the later is much more accurate. we offer it at the gym I work at, that's how I know.)

^^Damn BMI is such crap. By my calculations on different BMI calculators even with calipers my BMI is some where between 25% and 14%. Um ok..I call bs.
I posted a thread a bit ago and someone suggested to do a water test. Bone density and muscle to fat ratio play into how "fat" someone is.

Yes, muscle does weight more than fat. Keep better track with a measuring tape instead.

Ditto on the measuring tape. Muscle weighs a lot more than fat but looks much better. The number on the scale means very little when determining how you look or how healthy you are; it's not really worth measuring yourself at all.

Can you fit into the same clothes as you did before you put this weight on? If you can then it is muscle weight.

i can still fit in the same clothes - though certain times they are a little tight (water weight) but my legs have increased in size - but I know it has to be muscle on them. It has to be! They're thick and sturdy - but I don't want huge muscley legs big enough to challenge my weight lifting body building boyfriend. I can hold him up with my legs alone and he is like 20st!! Its great having the strength - but they look big because of it!

Grr. Iv been trtying to lean out and lengthen some of the muscle but its not working. Any ideas how to lengthen muscle?

Ditch the scale, ignore BMI and grab a tape measure. That's the only useful way to gauge size and control girths.

I know a LOT of girls who are lighter than me but are a hellalot fleshier (fatter).

BMI is a lie, but a tape measure is true.

True dat. I weigh 116.5 LBS at four foot eleven and a half inches & can still fit all my "skinny" clothes. The number vs. height sounds atrocious, but it's all muscle.

I can't believe what numbers do to women. It's starting to disgust me the adjectives people place with them. 125 is disgusting/atrocious/fat... wtf?

Help with what? You sound stunning. Have your bodyfat tested and take out the guess work. Per the same volume, mucle weighs 3X that of fat, but you will never know if you dont keep track of your BF. If you gained weight while working out a lot and your clothes fit the same or are looser, than you can suspect a loss of fat and a gain of some muscle, but that's not very objective way to figure it out. You sure it is not that time of the month/simple water retention, etc?

Muscle weighs more than fat!! When you're working out hard, don't look at the scale. Look at the way your body looks in the mirror and the way your clothes fit. Muscle weighs more than fat even when it's smaller in size!!

Only for a given volume. That's like saying a pound of lead weighs more than a pound of feathers. The "muscle weighs more than fat" statements are incorrect (minus the issue of volume) which ads to confusion in the long run.

No, it's not like saying that. An inch of muscle weighs more than an inch of fat. YES it does.

That's because you just added a VOLUME to the equation. "An inch of muscle weighs more than an inch of fat" is not the same as saying "muscle weighs more than fat" which is what you actually said above and what I wanted to clear up for people.

I promise you, many people don't, so I just wanted to throw that out. Guess what, many people get the question wrong when asked "what weighs more, a lb of lead or a lb of feathers?" on standard tests.

i really dont think the "lb of feathers/lb of lead " thing is at all applicable here.

The saying "muscle weighs more than fat" is really only coined to make sense of how, you can be working out like crazy, looking a lot better, becoming smaller and LOOKING like you have lost weight and still not be losing any weight. Muscle is more dense and burns a lot more calories, so its more of a density/size issue.

I struggle with the same thing-- a lot of it is genetic. You can look like an athlete or look smaller, but giving up working out is difficult because you are afraid you might blow up. I would try cutting back on some of the weight lifting and ditch the incline on your treadmill--that will add size to your legs really fast.

So, its really more a personal preference. You might be a bit heavier but still lean, but if you prefer a different look, try to diet and do less weighted moves with higher reps and more frequent to increase tone and decrease size.

Hope this helps, and hope this thread doesnt get derailed again
