    Default I tried to help a dog...sad

My SO and I were driving through a very seedy/unsafe part of Nashville this evening and there was a dog trying to walk through traffic. I wanted to stop right then and try to talk to her, but I didn't. My SO told me that if she was still there when we were leaving town we could stop and see if we could get her to come up to us.

20 minutes later I saw her walking around a grocery store parking lot eating trash, so I made my SO pull into the parking lot. She would not come near me no matter what I did. My SO got out some snacks we had in our truck and threw them out to her, and she ate some of them, but refused to get close enough for us to actually touch her.

We tried for more than 10 minutes and I didn't want to leave her there, but I didn't know what else to do. Staying in that parking lot was attracting a lot of attention that we didn't want to be part of, so we had to leave. She was a young dog but she was *very* scared of humans. Do I try and go back during the day or do I just leave her be? She looked/acted so sweet, but so scared of people that it was damn near impossible to get her to work past that. I'm pretty sure she will still be there tomorrow, because she acted like she knew the area she was in. Poor baby.

    Suggestions?

Is there a humane society you can call? That's the only thing I can think of. They should be able to catch her and take her in. If she's adoptable then she'll find a new home, and if not, well it's better than her roaming the streets and being hit by a car or something.

Theres a stray cat in my apartment building like that. Shes so so tiny and I would take her in if she would come to me. I just leave her snacks out.

I was thinking the exact same thing BB.....

also GL your post makes me think that the dog has probably been abused at some point, and that why it was was probably shying away from you.

I agree with calling the humane society.

If you're going to try to catch her again, try one of those rotisserie chickens. Throw her chunks of it and then throw some chunks in your car. As soon as you get her in the car with the door shut give her the rest of it. She might puke in your car, but she'll be happy. Also, do a quick google for "calming signals" (you might have to throw "turid rugaas" into the google, I'm not sure) and try to use them.

    Lena thats some fab advice!

I always think a stray dog is safer if it is shy of people, much safer than being freindly and approaching everyone. Because not everyone is nice to dogs.

Does she look like she is a pit bull or pitty mix?

If so, N-ville does NOT look kindly upon pittys.

I would check again in the day time, and maybe call a no kill shelter to see if they can help.

If she is shy, try to get her into a carrier, not just into your car. Scared dogs can become aggressive real quick when cornered.

You'd be better off going back and calling animal control or a no kill shelter if they have one nearby...tell them where she is and stay there tossing her bits of food to keep her there until they arrive.

aww this is so sad. Glad that you stopped to try to help her...how many others just drove right on by and didn't give it a second thought.

hopefully you'll be able to get her to safety. My guess is calling a no-kill shelter would be the best bet. Keep us updated!!

Aw, poor dog. They look so sad wandering the streets, it breaks my heart.

Thanks for trying to help, even if you couldn't catch her. The world needs more people like you.

Ok, I checked around last night and most of the no kill shelters aren't taking large dogs right now. I really don't want to call the pound because they keep dogs for like, 3 or 4 days most of the time. I'm going to try and see if I can even find her again tomorrow before I go to the doctor and go from there.

^^I can't help it, I've always done stuff like that. My mom actually has a cat that I found in a Dairy Queen parking lot when I was 16. Sweetest cat in the world, with the greenest eyes ever.
