What do you think your dreams mean? Do you remember them ? Record them ? Interpret them etc?

I think most dreams are of fantasy, no substance, etc.....its is said people on average hve 5 different dreams anight, i believe...

I do think that once in a while you will dream about current events, etc..case in point 4-5 years ago my company was leaving MA to go to Kansas City, MO. I know I just didn't want to live there and had to start looking for another job. One night I dreamt I was on a highway driving, and could not get off at the right exit, and kept passing different exits, not knowing if I wanted to turn-off or not....

I looked up the intereptation and it stated it usually means that your in a period of change and you don't know what to do (ie what job to take, what to look for, etc), hence missing the exits and not knowing which one to take.

I remember most of my dreams, the best ones are flying, because it feels so real.

    Cool thread, twisterinAZ!

Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung (1875-1961), proposed that the average dream is similar in structure to a drama & consists of four distinct stages:

    (1) 'Exposition' - The opening scene which introduces place, characters and the situation that the dreamer will face (an issue or problem expressed metaphorically).
    (2) 'Development' - The emergence of the plot.
    (3) 'Culmination' - Something significant happens, the main character responds.
    (4) 'Lysis' - The conclusion of the dream. The ending of the dream is regarded as the most important stage. It signifies how the dreamer might deal with the problem or issue that was expressed in the first stage (exposition). In essence, the dream-work creates a solution or result for the dreamer.

As an adult, my dreams seem to be expressions of the feelings that arise when I'm encountering personal and professional obstacles. Because we dream in metaphors (oh shit, I just quoted a Seal song!) it's sometimes difficult to define a dream's meaning(s). When I can recall my dreams in particularly vivid detail, I enjoy interpreting them with someone I trust who understands and appreciates my desires/vulnerability.

IMO, some children (and very few adults) possess the miraculous ability to spontaneously recall and even interpret dreams instantly upon awakening. My 9-year-old can pop off his pillow and begin chattering about a dream scene-by-scene, while tossing up offhanded interpretations. WTF! That shit is wonderful, yet intimidating, because it seems evident that one journeys AWAY from one's unconscious core as the years pass...

When I go through emotional stuff and life transforming stuff I dream a LOT. Like last night. I try to remember them. Today I wrote it down. Paid attention to how I was feeling during my dreams because those tend to say more than going to a dream mood looking for symbols. Sometimes imagery and symbols can help though!

I see dreams as an important aspect of my life. They help me weed through things and experiences and help my figure out my feelings on matters - since lately I've been so numb to life.

I had a therapist for minute who was Jungian-based. Dreams are pretty interesting when I pay attention.

I think dreams express fears a lot of the time. I use to have dreams that I was to be married but wearing the wrong clothing and I interpreted that as I wasn't ready to be married. Then I have had dreams of falling or drowning which I think means I feel as though I can't keep up with my life or I am failing to sustain expectations I have of myself. I probably should keep a journal but I typically don't have the time or I forget them by the time I think of what I need to be doing.

    I love this thread Twister!

I have different types of dreams. Ones I call my movie dreams, where I am doing something totally action movie-ish. Like running through a jungle and then deap sea fishing or saving people from a volcano. Stuff like that. Those are usually tense, but in a fun way. (like that made sense)

Then I have conversation dreams. I'll just be having a conversation. That's it. Talking to someone I know or don't know or in my dream know who they are but have never really met them.

Then my How To dreams. These freak me out. But in the dream I'll be doing some task that I know I don't know how to do, and I'll do it perfectly in my dream. As far as I know anyway. Or I'll figure out how to do something that I've been stuck on for a while.

My alltime fave dreams are sex and/or flying dreams. Hands down. The Bestest. There's never enough of those.

As far as what dreams mean, I don't know, I'll have to check out some of those web sites and see what I think. Right now, it's brain entertainment.

I used to read a lot about dreams when I was in Jr. High. I always wanted to do lucid dreaming where, when you realize you're in the dream you can control it. But it usually only works for me when I'm having a nightmare & will scream wake up in my dream & I do. Back when I studied that stuff I read more into it. Now I don't know if I believe it means much.

I wish I had sex dreams more often. Usually I get the heavy duty makeout dream where you wake up just before.

I also have the action dreams, but usually I'm running from someone. Sometimes I'm running from some really bad guys who want to torture me. Other times I'm running from the police who want to wrongly imprison me. Either way my favorite part is when I'll jump out of a window & go right into & an ocean & swim away. Sometimes there will be fire on top of the water I'm swimming under like a Schwartzenegger movie.

Roughly, I think they are a way for our brain to re-sort, and re-analyze things that are concerning us, as well as re-evaluate our experiences. Another way to say this is that during our waking hours, we are often so busy reacting moment to moment, that we stick to a set of reactions, feelings, and thoughts that are, relatively speaking, safe choices.

When we sleep though our brains sort of know that it's not real, no consequences, so a chance to re-explores memories and feelings without any real concern for grounding because there is no long term consequences to pay for a mistake.

Evolutionarily speaking, I think that we must have developed dreams because the re-living without the consequences and without the grounding tends to result in us learning better then the alternative of no dreams, and fewer opportunities to explore new behaviors/reactions during our waking hours (the time when we tend to stick with what we have previously learned, and what is safe).

I brought this up because recently, I have been having very vivid lifelike dreams. Some of them have been awesome to the point where I want to stay asleep and keep dreaming, but also some that are so intensely violent and terrifying that I don't want to go back to sleep. Sometimes, I wonder to myself, "Where the fuck was I exposed to that to even have thoughts about it?"

Does anyone else have bad nightmares when they're physically run down (like, ill, and/or lack of sleep, stress, etc...?) I never have nightmares but a few days ago I had a horrible one that left me in tears...It was like several months of no nightmares rolled into one big bad one to catch up on me....

The only good thing I can say is that it reminded me to do something important that I'd been putting off.

i read deeply into my dreams, because they always warn me of things to come in one way or another. weird, i know. but, it's true.

and people have said that if you die in a dream, you die in your sleep. LIE. i've died in a dream once, where i was stabbed, and i saw it from my pov, the vietnamese man's face, his grin as he stabbed me... i didn't feel any pain but my eyes rolled up in the back of my head, and it was black for what seemed like an eternity. then i woke up.

I've had a couple dreams like that..The theories are A) it's the brain making up vivid, movie-like scenarioes or B) you are "seeing" something that happened to someone else and your brain is somehow tuning it in for you to understand/empathize with....

    So there's a logical theory and a non-logical theory.

I strongly believe bad dreams are the body's way of "dumping" stress from the brain and/or body.

(My apologies for redundancy but nightmares make me feel so pathetically helpless and un-moored.)

I had the weirdest dream last night. In the dream I was sleeping & woke up the next morning with 4 belly buttons, 3 innes & 1 outtie. I have an innie in real life. It was so weird & freaked me out for some reason. When I woke up I actually checked for extra belly buttons, lol.

Hmmm, I used to be really into dreams. During an extended stress free period I was able to lucid dream, this was many years ago. Flying was literally the best, the power, freedom and control... also the sudden microclimate changes, like those you encounter on a motorcycle but amplified, and infinitely more bizarre. The sex dreams were cool, adding different partners and exploring things I wasn't really comfortable with in RL.

I miss those days, now its just sucky nightmares, totally stress based.

I have a recurent dream just before I get very sick... Its bright white all around me, a tremendous pressure, and then slowly huge sports objects sortof materialize around me, I seem to be walking around them, huge as in 30' footballs, baseballs, whatever... Always just before I get really sick. Wierd.

Ive been having a lot of dreams about High School lately. I dont really like that too much. HS was bad for me, so I guess maybe they are more like minor nightmares lol. And a lot about my HS boyfriend. Wierd...

I have had three dreams where I die, but Im still alive. Normally after I die I black out for a while then wake up. Nothing too exciting there.

My favorite dreams are the ones where I realize Im dreaming and control what's going on to an extent. Im like, "wait a sec, Im dreaming!" and can change what's happening a bit. I want to get better at it so I can make flying dreams or sex dreams, but I cant control them that well at all, and only sporadically. oh well.

Well, dreams are the way for the brain to clean house, reorganize, toss out useless trash and generally clean things up considerably (this is the reason that after a good night's sleep with dreaming, you tend to think more clearly.) But a lot of really cool things happen during the housecleaning.

Most dreaming occurs during rapid eye movement (REM), which is the most awake state of sleep. Neural firing in the brain stem and limbic system are let loose into the midbrain, where the brain is free to interpret the meaning of all this random electrochemical activity.

Most dreaming occurs close to when you are falling asleep or waking up. One other cool aspect of dreaming is that it tends to be time-regressive, so if you fall asleep at night and suddenly wake up, you will have been dreaming about something recent. If you have a dream in the morning, it's more likely to be about something that happened long ago in your life.

It's worth remembering that dreams are mental movies where you are the director. That's not the conscious you that's directing, it's the unconscious you. The part of you that may be suppressed or reluctant to speak or frightened or stressed out of your mind or a thousand other things -- they have the director's chair. As Freud famously commented, dreams are the royal road to the unconscious. It's where the unconscious mind takes over and has the full run of your mind.

I've been having the craziest dreams lately and about people I haven't thought about in years. It's like a cast of characters from my life has been visiting me in dreams. Everything from childhood friends to my ex-husband. It's weird. I hope this doesn't mean I'm dying soon or anything.

    At least I'm sleeping .
