    Default misinformation

    Would you believe

I was just told by my mother in law (whose highest credential is a high school certificate) that she doesn’t value my opinion at all. Cos of course this bible guy is right, despite the numerous contradictions in the pamphlet and the lack of any sources.

Yep, I believe it. I've got a lot of relatives who are Baptists and Catholics.

Eh, I was taught evolution in Catholic grade school. They learned their lessons about not screwing too much with science from the Copernicus and Galileo debacles. They're still a bit suspect on birth control and history, though.

    Default misinformation

Reposted, cos half the original disapeared, and I cant get the edit to save!

    Would you believe

    a) some guy without a single accreditation who wrote a pamphlet quoting 2 ‘sources’ (the bible and a newspaper article from 20 years ago)

    or

    b) A person who HAS a degree, specialising in the same field as this subject matter who recently wrote a High Distinction peer reviewed 10000 word paper on this very issue?

Religious nuts can be MILITANT about ONLY believing other religious nuts.

Unless god him/herself comes down and tells them differantly....your silly little degree means nothing compared to someone who tells them exactly what they want to hear and agrees with them!

Ironically god says somewhere about not judging others....

Also the argument topic was something which she has zero personal experience in.

ANY girl or guy on SW is more knowledgable than her on the sex industry.

And she just doesnt follow simple logic. Cos closing brothels DOES NOT mean that sex workers will suddenly find some other way to support themselves.

Is your MIL my mom? My mom will believe anything anyone who claims to be christian says despite any proof by actually qualified people. Like that dinosaurs never existed.

Of course prostitutes will reform if we just close their places of business-aren't they just sinful, mislead women waiting to be saved?

Sorry if I missed it, but what's your degree in? I wanna see your paper!

I am guessing by the replies that the Pamphlet has something to do with prostitution?

Was that left out in the edit and re-edit?

Martin Luther attempted to ban prostitution, and he married off the prostitutes to "Christian" husbands who would discipline them back into virtue. Many of them committed suicide.

Not that that would've mattered to Luther, who also wrote, "If a woman dies in childbirth, it is of no consequence. Let her die; she is there to do it." So loving, these Christians.

But of course! The unborn are beloved creations of the Lord, and must be cherished. Everyone else, fuck 'em. Like George Carlin said... "If you're pre-born, you must be protected. If you're pre-school, you're shit out of luck."

I'd say it's important not to be a "tool", so just because you learned something in the academic world also doesn't necessarily make it fact. Quite the opposite, there are a lot of posers in the academic world who are full of shit and yet appeal to the masses. I think people need to be somewhat suspect of everything they read and learn. That said...

I tend to believe those who either a.) back their beliefs with a lot of repeatable evidence, or b.) who are clear minded enough to identify their own biases and explain their concepts in that light. I tend to avoid beliefs based strictly on "faith", or on what makes people "feel good" because IMHO, it's almost always BS. Popular yes, but still BS.

my point is that if god is suppose to heal, etc, then why are you putting you life in the hands of science.....

same way with the PETA people who are against animal testing, but, use the same insulin that was tested on dogs.

    its hypocritical...

Just because you believe in G-d doesn't make you completely ignorant. Plenty of people, self included, believe that our capacity for understanding science is a gift of G-d and it's one of the ways we were created in the Divine Image. We were able to create medicines to prolong our lives and reduce suffering, which is a good thing. Personally I thank G-d that we were gifted with this intelligence.

And nowhere in my Bible does it say G-d heals believers. We weren't put here to lie around helpless, we were put here to build a better world for ourselves.

Yes Yek. I'm imagining a bunch of people laying around in a stupor "no worries, God's got my back."

I believe in God, but that doesn't mean I don't also belive I need to take responsibility for myself. I also believe in the many interpretations of God. Meaning that I do not think any one person's God is The God.

So, yes, you can believe in God and use modern science to cure the sick and inferm. Why? Because God gifted us with the ability to learn and grow and develope that science to save lives every day. Yah...

To the OP, sorry to get off track. I'm so sorry to hear your MIL made you feel so badly. No matter what a person's opinion is, we each have right to have one.

It's funny because I use to believe in a lot of things when I was younger including believing in the power of prayer and God and the bible. Now I just believe in nothing other then it's a big universe that has no purpose or meaning other then the meaning or purpose that we (or any intelligent being) give things; nature is a completely emotionless mindless heartless bitch; and I believe that science has done more to truly ease people's suffering, extend life, and cure illness then any religion, prayers, or God. Do I sound pessimistic? Actually I'm not. I think intelligence, and science can lift us up out of the muck, free us from the limitations of our genes, free us from toiling just to survive, ease pain, free us to pursue more then basic survival, and much more. And I do believe people should breathe meaning into their lives because if they don't, nobody else will, and without meaning, life sucks (at least it does for me). But I no longer look for meaning or purpose from a higher being or from without. I look for it inside, and I'm thankful everyday that science, and intelligence has left us people with more free time then ever to purse interests and meaning above and beyond just basic survival.

Just FYI...I am against animal testing. I do take meds that I'm sure were tested on animals at one point though. But now, there are options that didnt exist back when these meds were developed. So NOW..animal testing isnt as necessary as it used to be.

    So it isnt hypocritical.

Yup, and this religious guy writes FACT, not opinion, despite being unable to cite a single source.
The things he claims are actually disproved by any study Ive ever seen, so its not like there is no info out there, he just chooses not to quote anything which opposes his POV.
The first thing I do before I read any literature is see who produced it. There was a huge issue here that the 'non-judgemental' unplanned pregnancy support groups were run by a church, rather than health professionals.

My MiL refuse to admit that what she believes is her opinion, not fact. Actually there are parts of the bible that she disagrees with, but she just claims that they should have interpreted it HER way.

My guess would be that this has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with mother in law vs girlfriend/wife issues.

These bitches just can't seem to cope with the fact that they are not the number one influence in their sons lives anymore. Cut the apron strings.

There are many stereotypes about the industry that I work in. Sometimes they can be true but human beings are very diverse creatures and cannot be pigeon-holed into one category.

Some of the most effortlessly beautiful, kind, intelligent, successful, motivated, driven and ridiculously hilarious women that I have ever met have been dancers. I've met the best friends that I've ever had in this industry.
