Default Have to break my jaw

So, Ive gone to about 4 dentists over the last couple years to see about fixing the mess Denti-cal has caused. I have weak teeth, inherited, my dad has them and my grandmother had all hers pulled around my age

I had Denti-cal when I was younger and they would do a root canal and not cover a crown meaning the filling came out and my back teeth are breaking off.

its really interesting because i get compliments on my teeth all the time but its the part you cant see thats bad.

I now have a gen dentist, periodontist and orthodontist working together to "save my teeth". But theyre not going to be saved. I have to have SIX pulled and implants put in.

My thoughts - if Im going to start all this work in the thousands of dollars I want a perfect smile.

I have a severe crossbite. My lower jaw is 3/8 inch to the right and the only way to realign it is to break my jaw and place it in the correct position.

    So, heres the deal

Just had root planing - $1000 (step 1)
Have SIX teeth pulled - $1500
Have jaw surgery - $ ?!?!? I dont even want to THINK about it
Have braces put on for 2+/- years $6,000 (theyre going to move my wisdom teeth to fill in the gaps of where my molars are being pulled)
Then Ill STILL need 2-3 implants in the upper left side $3500 each

So, this will be well over $20K in the end - probably closer to $30K. Unless I win the lotto I have no idea what Im going to do.

I CAN fix my teeth without the jaw re-alignment but then Ill still have the crossbite and I HATE it... its severe and makes me smile funny

This is more like a rant or a cry for help. I dont know what to do but if I put this off longer Im going to end up with dentures at 30.

Oh, and its no bother to say "get a 2nd opinion" - This is opinion FOUR. Theyre all the same.

I don't know much about this, but could it be cheaper to get veneers (and they look so beautiful!)? I have no idea how much they cost, so please excuse my ignorance if they cost more than that.

If it was the front teeth that would be a viable solution... but its the rear reeth and veneers cant help that. Neither can they fix the crossbite - only braces (hopefully ONLY braces and a palatal expander) or surgery with braces can fix my teeth. I almost wish it was front teeth - much easier fix

I had a crossbite and got braces. I no longer get migraines! I don't know how your credit is, but could you finance them? I really have no idea what to say as far as the financial aspect of it goes. That really, really sucks! Sorry Mamas! ;(

Time to find a very generous and kind sugardaddy, preferable a dentist or oral surgeon.

Or you can apply for medical aid through the local community hospital, seeing as this sounds catastrophic and a dental insurer might balk at paying for most of it.

Or you can fix things gradually, spreading it out over a few years and working it into your annual budgets.

    Don't despair. (((HUGS)))

I've had a similar jaw surgery.....mine was a bilateral sagittal-split osteotomy. My lower jaw was sawed through, moved forward slightly, and put into place with the aide of titanium plates and screws....total cost: 11,000 (but this included the use of an operating room, and my Anesthesiologist. However, I had to have braces on in order to have the procedure without having my jaw wired shut....I have a great orthodontist....since I had already had braces with him as my Dr. twice...he put them on for free.

The surgery is painful....lots of swelling, and use of a muscle retractor causes pain all the way through the neck and chest.....plus, after awhile the bruising makes it's way down the neck and chest (damned gravity).....so don't plan on doing anything but recovering for awhile. Painkillers make it tolerable; but it isn't an easy procedure.

All that said though....I'd do it again in a heartbeat....I used to have terrible TMJ problems and migraines that went with it.....and now....haven't had a migraine in 2 and a half years! It's worth it in the end, I promise!
    Good luck!

I had daily migraines too....nothing touched them.....my Dr. even had me INJECTING vicodin into my tummy (fatty tissue) when I was getting them....that was the last straw....I got my consult with a great oral surgeon, went through with the surgery........and now, not a single migraine to speak of since the surgery! It's amazing to be free of that! Those migraines were completely debilitating....4 hours minimum out of every day was spent lying in a dark room, trying not to vomit......the surgery sucked, but it was worth every moment of post surgical pain, and every damn penny that I paid him (and I had to take out a loan to do it). I hope that it works as well for you as it did for me!

^^ I didnt realize what my migrains were from until the dentist asked if I get them. I always thought it was due to dehydration but I got them even when I drank a ton of water.

Tell ya what - having blood come out my nose during the root planing was intersting. And when she had me take a drink of water and it came out my nose rather than down my throat I had to laugh.... ahhh... the dentist and I get to go back Friday. Exciting.

Im paying cash... I really DO need a sugardaddy but the one I had has since dropped me since I wont leave my man to date him... oh brother...

oh, god, that sounds so awful to go through! I just had a bad cavity filled so I can only imagine. But you have to take care of your teeth and it'll only get worse I'm sure if you don't. At least that's what I told myself when I had my teeth worked on last time.

I had a friend who had very bad TMJ and had to have her jaw operated on and wired shut for a while. I don't know if they will wire your jaw shut, but she lost a bunch of weight afterwards since she was on a liquid diet. It helped her TMJ.

^^ If you have braces at the time of surgery, it's not neccesary to wire the jaw shut......they just tie it shut with rubber bands- which is great, because you can get into your mouth to brush your teeth!.....I can't imagine not being able to brush the insides of your teeth and tongue and such for two months, ew! The liquid diet is mandatory....nothing but liquid and mush (mashed potatoes were my friend) for at least two months....and then you can graduate to "real" foods.....my first "real food" was a grilled cheese with tomatoe soup....still nothing too "chewy" for another couple of months....I still can't chew gum (or have gummy bears....nuts to me, I used to love those things)...it makes my jaw click.....but hey, it's a pretty small sacrifice for a head free of pain IMHO.
I lost about 20 lbs after surgery ( I think most people do....liquid diet, plus painkillers kill the appetite too).....but....I gained it all back once I could eat again. I'd forgotten how tasty everything was! haha....I wouldn't mind being the size I was after surgery....except for the fact that I was weak and light-headed....guess I'm not meant to be really thin.

My mom had the same problem. By the time I was 6 she had all her teeth pulled and they screwed in the replacements. Hers are locked down and she has to go to the dentist to have them popped out for cleaning. Every 10 years or so since she's had to go back and have the implants redone.

I remember taking care of her during these times. I'd smush her french fries from McDonald's so she could eat.

I hope you have someone who will be there with you through all of this.

Goodness. Poor thing. I feel your pain. I went through something like you are right now, not as extensive but pretty close! As of right now I have the price of a used beemer in my mouth. Scary..

It's all worth it. When I work up one morning not in pain, it was worth it.

See if your dentist has a payment plan? Or if your credit is good, perhaps your bank will make you a loan..

    Big hugs for you!!!

    OK so - here goes

6 teeth being pulled next month - braces for 2 1/2 years. 1 year before surgery and 1 - 1 1/2 years after.

AND since Im having my top palate split (to broaden my smile - cosmetic only) AND my lower jaw moved I will have to have my jaw wired shut. BUT youre correct about if i was only having my bottom jaw done theyd use bands with braces and no wiring needed.

I figure if im going to have one jaw broken why not do both and get it fixed to be pretty AND functional. I have a really small jaw for my mouth and my teeth are narrow... splitting the palate will push my teeth out and fill in my mouth. I asked about a palate expander but you can only get those when your bones are still growing and before the 2 top palates fuse into one. DAMN

6 months before the braces come off i will need bone grafts for the implants and after im all done with braces ill get 2 dental implants and then i will have perfect beauty queen teeth. LOL

And with the money. I had gotten a CareCredit card which HAD a $2500 limit. I used $1000 on root planing. The rest will go to the teeth pulling. Payments @ 210 a month for 12 months. Zero percent finance.

Braces are $1500 down and 180 a month. AND by the time my surgery rolls around i should have good dental and medical coverage through whichever company i work for (as a hairdresser) and they said they can typically get the surgery covered. Another reason to do both parts at once because even tho the top palate is cosmetic theyd do both at once and bill my insurance.

The dental implants with bone grafts are something like $3000 each but again insurance should cover a substantial part.

I was soooo worried about needing all this money right now but it looks at tho it will all work out just fine.

Now all i need is a good job as a hairdresser with good dental/medical coverage. Im leaning towards JCPenny and went in today. They loved me - i filled out a (blank LOL) application and she assistant mgr took my name and number and said shell have the manager call me tomorrow Yay!

Oh gosh. I had part of the work done but then quit working and cannot afford to get it all done.

I had the teeth on the left pulled. Still need the teeth on the right done then Ill be getting braces.

I go back and forth on getting the surgery but Im pretty sure Ill end up going that route. The other option I was going to go to Costa Rica and just get implants/crowns and veneers and no surgery but I want to fix the crossbite so I threw that out the window. Honestly I need to go back to work and get this sh*t done... so I can get the surgery over next summer break.

This thread made me feel faint!

On the topic of Denti-Cal- I had good luck with them but they only did a portion of my work. However, they screwed up my sister's teeth, which is too bad (I don't talk to sis but I heard about it- I wouldn't wish these problems on anyone.)

I recommend finding someone in Mexico (border area) to do this...You can be driven down to the clinic by a friend and driven back home a few days later.

^Jenster- it is funny & let us know if you get replies to the ad. But look at the situation- this is a serious LOT of surgery, very delicate and it would help if her dentist/oral surgeon had a favorable bias towards her (& not just a general "hey pretty lady" bias.)

I'm speaking from several years of misery from dental problems....& Dealing with many dentists.

On a related note, now I know how to tailor my sugardaddie profile for good...Hee hee.

    Refer them to my ad.

If nothing else it would be funny to get a response. Normally when I post on craigslist I'm inundated in about 5 minutes. This time it's been 7 minutes and I've got nothing. Do you think I should throw in something about unprotected anal?

AL - I'm not suggesting you would do it. It's just a joke.

Oh hells yes. My last sugardaddy was all about that, but lucky for me he had ED so it never happened.

PS- AL, I can PM you a referral to my oral surgeon in Northern California- he has in-house financing (FORMAL.) He is also a wonderful person.

I had braces and my jaw realigned. My jaw had been broken in an "incident" some 10 years ago. So even though I had it set and wired ..years later I had to get titanium screws put in to move it forward and take the place of bone that is now gone, and braces to make it all line up.

I went through 2 sets of braces, one was ceramic and that was 3+ years. Then they gave me metal for 3! I didn't even have an overbite. But I would have had a cross bite had I not gotten them. I paid 5 grand. I now wear an invsalign set as a retainer.

The jaw surgery was the worst pain ever. I don't want to scare you but seriously if you can avoid it I recommend it. if it's just for "looks" get a chin implant. If it's due to the bones being brittle etc ..well I guess screws are the way to go.

My 2 screws, plus surgery costs 32,000 nothing covered my insurance on my end. Nothing cosmetic. I needed something there since the bone was gone and my jaw literally was like glass. But the insurance considered it "cosmetic" I suppose because my jaw wasn't hanging off my face at the time.

All in all surgery plus braces cost me out of pocket 37,000. I never financed any of it so I have no idea how much it would run you through financing.

Impants are around a grand a piece obviously worth it though in the long run.

Girl I wish you the best and a speedy recovery. I know what it's like to go through this and just want it to be over and smile and know your teeth are securely in your head lol.
