    Default Robert Jordan died!

I dunno if anyone here reads the Wheel of Time, but it's author has just died of Amyloidosis on September 16th at 2:45 PM EST (And, no, i don't know what 'Amyloidosis' is).

    From his blog...

    Don't look below...

    I mean it...

    I warned you...

ps. This is tawdry of me, but after reading eleven 1000 page books over the past 20 years, i home someone completes the series. He was working on the 12th and last book up until he died, but it was second fiddle to his medical treatments (Natch') The guy left notes, apparently in case this happened, as well as lay it out for his wife. I know i shouldn't be thinking about the last book at a time like this, but... Frank Herbert left me hanging with dune (also on account of death, excuses... excuses...) wasn't looking for any repeats.

As long as it isn't Kevin J. Anderson they get to finish the series, i don't care.

PPS. This has got me toasting George R. R. Martin's health, lemme tell ya!

Damn that is a sad passing. The Wheel of Time series is just fantastic.
Guy #1: I'd totally hit that.
Guy #2: Dude, I'd hit that so hard whoever could pull me out would become the King of England.

According to , it's a blanket term for several different diseases that result in protein deposits in organs and tissues. Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Mad Cow Disease, and Kuru (which comes from cannibalism) are forms of amyloidosis. Doesn't sound like a nice way to go.

Hear, hear! Break m'heart if he kicked it....Ice & Fire is my favorite fantasy series ever!

But yeah, my family is all grumbly about RJ. Big loss to the book world.

    oh shit.

    12 of 14 books done. uh-oh.

i love the series and frankly i was very concerned about his health for him finishing this work. much like tolkien left some "unfinished work" (more ancillary though).

i like jordan's work. it's as epic as tolkien's imho but much more 'down-to-earthly' and and easier/enjoyable to read. i just finished his last book this summer too (Knife of Dreams).

sad to hear him passing on; sad for for the genre, personally, and for his life's work. i hope it is finished as he wanted it. i guess we'll never know for sure though.

edit: hmm, it looks like he basically completed the final novel of the Wheel of Time series (Memory of Light). i was under the impression it was originally slated for 14-novels not the 12-listed. whatevah.

It's good, no doubt about it. I just wish he'd finish Dance with Dragons. He had it supposedly 70% done when Feast came out and that was like a year and a half ago!

Martin is clearly the best out there right now. He's like Jordan if Jordan had a better editing team ... and a much more vicious streak. However, judging by the extreme length of time it takes Martin to finish a book, and the pictures of him that suggest he is living on a diet consisting solely of deep-fried sausages and ale, it's pretty unlikely that he'll finish his series either. Maybe Jordan's death will spur him to get his fat ass to a gym.

As for RJ, the decision to finish the series has apparently been left to RJ's wife Harriet and the president of Tor books. This pretty much means it'll get finished. I can't see Tor leaving it hang, there will be tremendous pressure to get the series finished. RJ laid it all out for Harriet, so she knows how RJ intended to handle all the important dangling plot threads as well as, most importantly, how he'd intended everything to end. I just wish he'd wrapped up the neverending Crossroads of Twilight (book 10) with more having happened so we'd be further along.

If anyone's interested, apparently Jordan left a partial manuscript as well as extensive notes and audiotapes for the parts that were not written yet. So it looks like the series will be completed the way Jordan wanted it to end.
