    Default Thai tea

My friend and I had lunch at a local Thai place and we ordered unsweetened ice tea. It was sooooooo good, there was a very distinctive yet subtle flavor which I can't describe. I've googled Thai tea but everything comes up as sweetened or "bubble tea" this was just unsweetened ice tea. Anybody have any idea what it was??? Me likey and want more!

You're talking about this stuff, right?

You can buy thai tea leaves at your local Asian grocery store, if you have one. It's a type of black tea-- not sure exactly what kind, but that doesn't really matter, because it's simply called Thai tea at the store-- that's colored with food coloring, and, when brewed, sweetened with white or palm sugar and topped with half and half or cream. You buy the tea leaves loose in a largish plastic bags; it tends to be very cheap ($3-4 for 8 oz. or so). Be careful because the tea leaves are dyed and will stain your fingers and clothes orangey-yellow, so pick a bag that is intact.

To prepare it, you can brew the Thai tea leaves in your automatic coffee maker just like you would coffee... this is what I do, I find it's the easiest way to brew a batch of it. Run a pot of plain water or half water/half vinegar through the machine first to eliminate as much coffee residue as possible, and then set it up to brew the tea as you would coffee. Keep in mind that you're going to use more tea per quantity of water than you would coffee .... you'll have to play around with the exact ratios. I think it tastes better weaker, as you'll have to sweeten the beejeezus out of it if you make it too strong, but don't make it too weak as you'll be adding ice to it. Anyway, brew your tea and dissolve sugar in it while it's hot... add as much or as a little as you like. If you want to be really authetic you can use palm sugar, also from the Asian grocery, but regular sugar is fine. Then chill it, pour over ice, top with half and half, and enjoy.

Oh, I just reread your post and noticed the tea was unsweetened. Huh, maybe I am way off-base. If so... well... the sweet kind is tasty too

no, there was no cream...it just looked like regular iced tea albeit maybe a tad greenish? iirc But I'll look for Thai leaves.

It may have just been iced green tea. Which has a slightly differant taste if you arent used to it.

hmmmmm...I don't think so but maybe...I don't think I've ever had iced green tea, I usually drink it hot. I'll try it but there was this subtle underlying flavor that I don't think I've ever had before...Next time I go to the Thai place I'm asking them what kind of tea they use (I know that's the most simple solution but it's so fun asking here first! )

It MUST have been just some standard type of tea because it was complementary with our meal whereas the true "Thai tea with pearls" had a menu price of $2.99! (I didn't know there was a difference until 10 minutes ago when I first googled. I just thought our tea was free because we spent so much on food )

Just had some plain iced green tea and that's not it. I've been searching and searching and I'll bet the mystery flavor is star anise powder. I have no idea how it's incorporated into the tea or in what ratio though.

Yeah the kind with cream is very sweet.

It was prob. just regualr thai tea, over ice. Was it kinda orangish? I love thai tea, and I just asked my local thai restraunt if they could sell me a bag and they did. If they won't sell you one you can prob. find it at an asian market.
