that makes me really angry. I would have reacted the same way he did. Heck, Ann Coulter came to my university and we all took part in a walk out, and the protesters asked her a lot more "offensive" questions than what he did. The police had absolutely no right to touch him.... this just reinforces my feelings on leaving America... as soon as possible.

Wow. And did you hear Kerry when the cops stepped up to grab the guy?

"That's alright, let me answer his question."

......What the fuck were those cops doing?

That was really disturbing. What happened to the kid? Is he in jail? Why didn't Kerry stop his speech during all that?

    Jeebus, I have the creeps.

They never even tell him why they are arresting him. And one of the charges is that he was resisting arrest; well fucking duh on what basis were they arresting him?! And I fucking love the comments on their about how he deserved to be arrested. Yeah, kiss your freedom goodbye idiots. Lets put all these guys in jail for asking conspiracy questions and let the murderers and rapists run free!

ETA: Someone commented that he should have been shot in the leg.

This has been on other boards. What I have learned is ........

    1. This guy stages stunts all the time for notoriety.
    2. Each person asking questions was given a time block, two minutes? He used his time and then refused to step down.
    3. He had already asked more then one question in this open forum discussion.
    4. John Kerry's 15 minutes of fame are up.

A little more information on this...

I know a lot of people at this school. Apparently, this guy is "known" for doing this sort of thing...he does it almost solely for attention. The school's police force was expecting him to show up and kind of knew he was going to try to disrupt the event with a stunt like this.

    Just giving two sides here.

    Reminds me of the quote...

First they came for the Communists,
but I was not a communist so I did not speak out.
Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists,
but I was neither, so I did not speak out.
Then they came for the Jews,
but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out.
And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me.

If I were to take the language of the originally linked article at face value, I'd be angry at the police too. Sadly, it seems to be rather editorialized for a "news" story. Whatever happened to "just the facts" reporting without the persuasive value judgment language?

Whether the police actions were appropriate or excessive is a matter of debate, but the tasered student does have a history of being an agitator/attention whore and was probably hoping something like this would happen.

Here's another article with a more balanced representation of what happened:

^This guy was KNOWn to be an instigator and trouble maker. he made sure he had a bystander tape his questions. His questioning time was up, and he kept shouting over other people, and refused to sit down, which was why the police stepped up in the first place to escort him out. It started off with just 2 officers, but he fought them so hard,t hey brought the other officers forward.

And he resisted. He fought them the whole way, tried to sidestep them and run back.

The cops knew very limited info. One, they had a known person who encourages disruption. Two. He was trying to disrupt a very public forum. Three, he was heavily resisting leaving the building.

You better believe they'd tackle him and taser him. It was a quick judgment, but I think a good decision, given the information they knew.

good to know but I think it was excessive force by the cops even if the guy is a known to stage disruptions.

also Kerry can be heard saying he wanted to answer the kids questions so I would hope no one would blame him for what happened.

It isn't even that he was known to be disruptive...HE FOUGHT THE POLICE. If he had walked quietly, it would have been no problem. But he fought them and resisted being escorted. Of COURSE they would taser him.

Cops love excuses to inflict harm. That's why they signed up to be cops. Did you notice the look of glee on the fat one's face just before he pushed the button? It was like "Oh, FINALLY I get to use this new toy!"

The dude couldn't have handled it worse, though I don't think the Tazer-ing was necessary. He was seeking to be harmed ... had some kind of political agenda about "hurt me, it will prove I'm more right if you hurt me," which is just a weird human symptom of anger.

But with four (or more) police officers sitting on him, he could easily have been duly processed (did anyone hear ANY "We require you to leave" or "this is private property" or "You have the right to remain silent"?) and treated with much greater respect. Lunatics usurping the microphone at a political forum are not an unexpected phenomenon.

And Kerry should have shut up and asked the police not to harm him. If he had wanted to be an upstanding straight shooter kind of guy, he should have said to the officers, "Well, please let him have his say, this is democracy and he has a right to his dissenting opinion about some of my actions." Then give him two or three minutes to rant, and then kindly say, "OK, I'd like to address some of that, and maybe we can agree to disagree on a few points." But instead Kerry dropped the ball and just mumbled over the melee, trying to drown it out.

So, I think all parties are pretty guilty. The LEAST guilty is the victim, who just let his emotions run him up against an inexperienced, incompetent police force ("incompetent police" ... but wait, that's redundant!). The most guilty are the cops themselves, who failed to engage in anything other than a cluster-fuck of stupidity. Kerry's in the middle of all that, too.

I have to agree. If you're going to be an ass and resist arrest even before they try and arrest you, you deserve what's coming. It isn't like he was tasered for ASKING the question. If it was civil discourse, that would be one thing. But this guy was just a troublemaker.

Slightly off topic, am I the only one who knows some cops and considers them friends? Not all cops are bad. A very select few are responsible for their bad reputation.

Actually, KERRY was calling for the cops to stop and wanted to answer his questions. He was not "inciting a riot" as the cops are claiming.

Yeah the guy is known, yeah hes a dick....but there was no reason for this. He asked a question that Kerry WANTED to answer....he should have been left alone as soon as Kerry called for it. THere was no riot...he didnt incite anything.

He was saying "let me go and I'll walk out of here" ..thats when they tasered him.

Two of the cops are already suspended...I doubt they will be reinstated. Theres no evidence here that procedure was followed...way too much force. Heads are going to roll on this one mark my words...

But how many lunatics say "let me go and I'll walk out of here", and then make a run for it or start hitting? Of course the police aren't going to go "oh, okay, go right ahead sir".

And I'm with hardkandee. I come from a family of cops, have a boyfriend who is going to the academy to be a cop, so I have a very different perspective other than "police just want to be a cop so they can beat people" or "incompetant police".

I believe the police, as a whole, really do try to make it a safer place. It is the small minority who abuse their power, but of course that's what people notice. People scream about police brutality, and those cases are all over the news for months...but the cops who die to safe innocent people, who put their lives on the line every night they work, are small blurbs at the best.

They are people. They make mistakes, but they almost always make decisions hoping to protect the people. In this instance, they may have thought if they didn't get that guy out of there, the situation could have escalated to a potentially harmful situation for a large amount of people. And when he fought them, they acted as they would with any person who physically resisted arrest.

I'm gonna say that everyone here fucked up. The kid was an asshole staging a big event, doing his damnedest to make this happen. The police were dicks for tasering him. Kerry was a wanker for continuing with his speech like nothing was going on. All around this was just a bad media moment for everybody. But there's no denying that the kid got exactly what he was looking for.

When the cop was carrying him to the back and he was screaming HELP HELP over and over, I couldn't stop thinking of Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail. "Ohhh, now we see the violence inherent in the system! Can't you see the violence inherent in the system? HELP, HELP, I'm being repressed!"

^^Heh, it's "Come see the violence inherent in the system!"..but I thought exactly the same thing when he started screaming "Help!". "Did you see that? Did you see him repressing me?"

--The most frightening thing about this, to me, is that no one really stood up and said anything. One or two people, after he'd been tazered, acted outraged. I agree the guy was a dick, and yes he did resist. I never heard them say he was under arrest or anything, but still. While the guy is screaming "HELP", some people applauded...how fucked up is that? "Yay, beat up the guy with a dissenting opinion, because he's annoying!" I dunno. I think the guy was offbase, the cops were offbase, and Kerry should definitely done more to stop it.

I'm not directing this at you Mr Hyde but......if they expected him to show up and knew he was gonna disrupt the event why didn't they do better to keep him out? If they hadn't let him in this debacle might not have happened.

He was just asking a question. The cops never told him to stop, told him to leave, or told him he was under arrest. I think he did exactly the right thing, he put his hands up in the air where everyone could see that he wasn't using them to assault police officers, and he tried to put some space between them while asking what was going on. When they continued to assault him, he very loudly let everyone around know what was going on. That's exactly what you should do when you're assaulted by the police. For Kerry to ignore that kind of brutality and just talk over his screams like nothing was happening is fucked up.

All you people who think he deserved it for being annoying, how would you like it if I thought you were being annoying so I sent my paid goons to just rush up to you and electricute you without even asking you to stop? It would be your fault for being so annoying, yanno.
