    Default Jenny McCarthy on Oprah

Did anyone see Jenny McCarthy on Oprah talking about her son who has been diagnosed with autism today?
I thought it was a great show and it helped shed more light on this disease that 1 in 150 children will be diagnosed with. I have worked with children who have austism in the past and found her story and the other moms to be very real and extremely touching.

I am trying to see if it will air one more time tonight so I might be able to catch it again.

No but on another board I go to they are discussing it. One of the girls has a son with this disease and it's heartbreaking.

My mom was bawling on the phone today because of it. I wish I could have seen it.

I didn't get to see it and I love watching Oprah. Its just so crazy how there are so many cases of autism in the last 10 years.

Women are having babies later and later. When you're 35 and just getting around to having a baby, you can't be too shocked if your eggs have deteriorated. It sucks that our prime reproductive years are also the years when it's socially problematic to breed, but this is a natural consequence of the society we've built.

I don't know of any science to back it up. however, I blame artificial foods and the additives.

i strongly disagree. there are a ton of reasons for this "epidemic." why, all of a sudden are all these kids being diagnosed? well, first off, years ago they would be given a diff diagnosis. second.. http://www.time.com/time/magazine/ar...576829,00.html

sorry, i just feel very strongly about this. that's what i'm doing after graduation this semester.. working in a school for autistic kids! and i'm interning there now. and my mom's best friend's son who i am very close with is autistic. just my opinion, obviously, since there is no proof either way of either of our thoughts.

    please please don't call it a disease. it isn't a disease. it's a disability.

or.. "differently-abled" because dis- means that they have no ability, which isn't the case, they just do things differently.

well, that's true, but disability is the correct term. either way, it certainly isn't a disease.

Thanks Britt. I hate when things are classified a disease. Be it alcoholism or autism - it's not a disease.

Partner has a form of autism... it's the main dealbreaker in our relationship.

Oddly enough he's trying really hard now and being super responsible, so I don't know. Last night he took me out to dinner and had the waitress bring me a random present before dessert from Swarovski... and that's so unlike an autistic person to figure out as 'romantic' it just baffled me.

He even made his own appointment to see the autism specialist next month. I'm impressed.

Maybe it's not as detrimental as I thought.

    Sorry for the threadjack. :x

That's funny, I know several mothers who were in their '20s and have autistic children. There are many factors at play.

My cousin recently found out that her son had autism. They didn't know what the problem was at first. They even tested his hearing as they thought he might have been deaf. But it turned out he is autistic. Her older daughter doesn't have it though so I'm not sure whether genetics are at play or not.

It's very sad though, he has never spoken a word. He does have some limited communication skills though, when he wants something to drink or eat he grabs her hand or his grandmothers hand and leads them to the kitchen and points to what he wants. He also plays computer games and is very good at them.

Some of the most effortlessly beautiful, kind, intelligent, successful, motivated, driven and ridiculously hilarious women that I have ever met have been dancers. I've met the best friends that I've ever had in this industry.

^ Genetically speaking, females are MUCH less likely to get it than males because it's a male-dominated gene with this problem. So the chances of a daughter not having it and son or two having it is quite frequent.

jaizaine, that's really common. the little boy my family is close with was tested for his hearing too. since they don't talk the first thought would be it's because they don't hear. ad lysondra is absolutely right about the gender thing. like i said i intern in a school for autistic children and there are very few females. the class i'm in has all little boys.

It's so crazy how many autistic kids there are compared to when we were growing up. My son had 3 in his class last year and 2 in his class this year. I have heard there is a theory that it has something to do with immunizations. Has anyone else heard that?

Yes, I've heard of that. Here's an article.

Could Environmental Factors Be to Blame for the Autism Epidemic?
    http://www.nbc29.com/Global/story.as...av=menu496_2_1

McCarthy suspects MMR shot caused autism
    http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune....mccarthy-.html

If there is any real truth to the stories then its very scary for one day I will have kids and have to get them immunizations. Its something that is suppose to be safe that in an unforeseen way is causing them harm.
