    Default wtf?! insurance rant

ok, i've always been told that to stay under my dad's insurance, i had to be a full time student. so i was taking a class that i didnt need for school at all, credits or anything, just to stay under insurance. someone told me that if you withdraw instead of drop it, its still on your transcript so you still keep insurance.

i call the company today to verify this and they say no, i don't have to be a student, i'm covered til i'm 25. ummm... neither me or my dad has EVER heard this. so i call back to get another person and ask them and they tell me that yup, i'm covered til i'm 25 and they don't know why they've been asking for student verification from me. this should be a good thing, yeah, but why is this the first i've heard of this? that's $1200 down the drain for a class that's paid for thinking i needed it to keep my insurance when i don't.

i'm afraid even though 2 people told me they might still be wrong. it better not be though since i'm going to withdraw from the class.. and i am so pissed off that a class that i never needed got paid for and i can't get my money back.

Could be. My health insurance carrier is very clear about this. They will go on covering dependents through age 23, but only if they are full time students. If they are not they are assumed to be independent adults and won't be covered. If covered, they require proof (a form stamped by the school registry) every 6 months that the student is enrolled. I don't know if there are any laws that require this of the company, or if it's just the companies policy.

Talk to somone else and if they confirm it as well...tell them to send you WRITTEN proof that you are covered until 25 regardless of student staus.

Why are you taking a class you don't need for insurance purposes? Were you not able to sign up for something you need and like? Some company plans require you to be a student, some don't. Its not universal. Is there no benefit to staying in this class? I'd hate to waste time and money on classes I had no interest in.

because i didnt need any more classes. i lose the money anyway at this point. i only need 3 classes this semester to graduate in january, i'm way over on credits and classes since i changed my major. so i just needed it to be considered full time, 12 credits or more, and those 3 classes only give me 10.

either way.. withdrawing means im still full time since it stays on my transcript (diff from dropping.. you can only drop in the first 2 weeks of school and then it disappears from your transcript and you get money back) so even if theyre wrong it means i'll have coverage til graduation. but i just dont understand why we've always been told i needed to be a student til now! its annoying. not that i wouldnt have been anyway.. but that wouldve saved the money spent on this class!

Because ins companies are big old cluster fucks and half the people working there have no idea what they are talking about, and for the minimum wage they are makin..they dont care. Add that to the fact that ins companies do EVERYTHING in their power to cost you as much as possible while shelling out as little as possible themselves and yeah....its damn near impossible to get a straight answer from them

Hell..I remember when I lived in Jersey we had rain for days that was so strong our neighborhood flooded. People had several inches of water in their homes. My one neighbor tried to file with his ins company for flood..he had flood insurance...and they told him..get this...."flood" is only when water comes UP(as in when you live near a river and the river overflows into your home)..when water comes DOWN(like overwhelming amounts of rain) it isnt flood and therefore not covered.

After THAT....nothing ins. companies do or say surprises me.

^ they arent making money off of my classes though! my school is. thats the part that gets me.

haha that flood story reminds me of the car insurance commercial though... where he comes out and the name brad is scratched into his car but only full names are covered hahhaha.

But they are making you spend more money and making things as difficult for you as possible. The hope is that you wont bother and then then can take the money you've already given them and not cover you.

At what that class cost you, and considering that really didn't need the credits from it, I almost wonder if it would have been cheaper just to buy your own insurance if you had to. (I assume we're talking health insurance here).

Honest to God anymore, I would almost be persuaded to tape record any conversation I have with an insurance company representative, so you can catch them doing this sort of double talk.

well, i dont know the exact cost of the class. and my parents pay for school. they wouldnt pay for out of pocket insurance. the class was anywhere from 800-1200. out of pocket to keep the same coverage i have, which is pretty good as far as i'm concerned, i've never had any problems, would be at least $400 a month. so i would be paying the same or more. i did think of that but my parents were not thrilled about the idea and i couldn't argue since they pay for it.
