Default Jiu Jitsu - Anyone done it?

So, not being happy with the few pounds I gained and ALL the tone I LOST due to school I was trying to think of something more fun than the treadmill.

So, I know dancers that take jiu jitsu and am thinking of taking that... great core and flexibility training. Plus Ill learn to kick all those mean strippers butts!

Anyone here taken it and how did ya like it?

My brother took it for a few years and turned from this skinny kid into this HUGE FREAKIN' GUY! He's also not to wrestle around with me and my sister anymore since that time he accidentally gave my dad stitches... If your results are anything like his (I'm sure he bulked up on purpose, though), I wouldn't want to fuck with YOU in the dressing room, lol.
If you think school is hard, try being stupid.

LOL - yea - guys tend to bulk up like that - all the bouncers at my club in Sacramento are UFC fighters and/or do Jiu Jitsu but all the dancers Ive seen that do it have some tight bodies - like tight core... toned to the max (but not bulk) Too bad these are the mean girls I dont talk to or Id ask THEM for info. (I "stole" a custy from one so shes now a b*tch to me!)

It's GREAT for self-defense and depending on the style, school and instructor it CAN be a great workout.

Jiu jitsu is great for ground fighting, but not as good with the kicking and punching. I've had some training in jiu jitsu, shorin ryu karate, full contact kickboxing and american style boxing. Training for any of them will whip you into shape. If you also want an all purpose self defense style, I would combine the jiu jitsu with karate or kickboxing classes.

I want to take up Krav Maga some day when there is a studio nearby. Jiu Jitsu was cool but that was many years ago.

OK, so which would be BEST for just body strength and flexibility... core training. Im not necessarily looking to learn to fight... just something more fun than working out at the gym but will get me into good shape fast!

I would say karate or kickboxing... they both have upper and lower body work, encourage flexibility (for those high kicks), lots of cardio and ab work. Working hard on a heavy bag, you get the same effects as weight lifting in the arms, lats and delts. Your butt will get a lift from all the kicks. Jiu jitsu is more flowing, graceful and elegant, but I don't think you necessarily get the cardio effects although it does encourage super flexibility.

If you want qualtiy kickboxing schools that follow a code of ethics, I would recommend ones that belong to IKF.

Here's a link that lists schools by state... http://www.ikfkickboxing.com/kbschoolusa.htm

Which gym? It may be one that I've heard of/interacted with and can give you a heads up.

I took muai tai and tai chi for years and loved them. When we moved here there isn't a local dojo that offers those classes, so I took Krav Maga instead and loved it to. But there is only 3 phases to it and I graduated from it already.

So NOW I take MMA and LOVE IT!!!

You will have a blast and get sexy as hell in no time, just make sure you are getting the real deal. I take it from one of our bouncers that also owns his own gym and is a Bodog/UFC/Hook N Shoot fighter, so it's the real deal. (His gym has a ring in it, with all the pads and everything.)

You will LOVE LOVE LOVE KM!!!

I did. It's basically the more intense military combat training, with gun and knife disarmament and fun stuff like that, lol.

Dave Marinoble is a badass. He's done some training with Johnny Davis....a legend in kickboxing. I don't know anything about Bok Fu. I would go with entry level kickboxing if you have never done any martial arts. And, I would ask at the gym about the MMA. MMA can be a lot of fun with the right people. If you get to talk to the big man himself, let him know you were referred by a former fighter of Scott "Conan" Mincey.

Ahhh. I just spoke with the owner. Hes super cool and nice. I guess the manager from my club in Sac trains there... I didnt look but hes at the top of their fighters page so I know its a good place.

I guess Dave, the owner, is flying out to England because his guys are fighting and he seemed upset not to be there Tues for my first class... lol... Hes all well, if something happens Ill be there. It was so cute.

Looking forward to it! Thanks boxingdoc

If you want a workout with a lot of kicking and such, rather than grappling, try Tae Kwon Do or Tang Soo Do..they're very similar to one another, and focus mainly on kicking techniques.

Oh, I ended up signing up with kickboxing. Jiu Jitsu was what the other girls did but they actually fought. They had nice bodies but now that I know *exactly* what Jiu Jitsu is Ive gone with kickboxing.

I'm a black belt in Judo and a Brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Been doing muay thai for years, including several months in Thailand at a Thai Camp. I train here at one of the better known MMA gyms, City Boxing.

The chest is not really a striking target so girls with implants tend to be ok doing boxing/muay thai as long as it's not too extreme. In jiujitsu, judo, people will be sitting on your chest quite a bit, but girls with big real boobs have to deal with it to and make due somehow.

I've gotten several of my lady friends into our gym, 2 of them are dancers with implants, they do a lot of boxing, muay thai and BJJ.

Krav Maga is a great technique set, but to be good at it you'd have to train it daily. BJJ is a better bang for the buck.

For exercise, either path will probably be a big deal. To seriously train Muay Thai or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is very intense. For any female interested in the pragmatic side of martial arts, grappling arts are about 300 times more effective for you than striking arts. You have a prayer against somebody much bigger than you(a guy) grappling, you have no such prayer striking. I've taught women's self-defense classes before.

If you want "flexibility", core training, and whatever other buzz words, BJJ is probably going to offer more bang for the buck for the average woman. And you won't risk getting your face too messed up.

I'm training for a fight coming up in November, I train twice a day. Before work from 6-730am, after work from 7pm-830pm ish, and 2-3 hours each weekend day.

Skip the karate UNLESS it is some Oyama or Kyokushin karate. I'm also a black belt in kyokushin, it is a bare knuckle fighting content to pass the test, quite brutal. In some ways worse than Muay Thai. Most Karate is junk, especially here in the states.

PS: Most people who fight train won't blow up in size unless they really want to. All the combat sports are weight classed and staying in your natural weight class is usually a big deal for those who compete. My switch from LHW to HW after I left the military was a huge deal for me, as it put me into competition with much heavier guys and it took me yeeaaars to get to the average weight for a heavyweight.

PPS: UT OH!!! Rueben "Warpath" Villareal is at Marinoble schools. That's the dude right there. Anyplace where he is has gotta be cool.

Tell us how it goes ok? I'm really curious. I wanna be a ninja once in my life. I know, I'm silly.

That was THE MOST INTENSE hour and a half of my life! It was awesome!

Everythings done in 3 minute sets with 30 seconds in between.

I learned the stance, jabs, roundhouse, front kick, sidekick, hook, etc etc etc.

Warm up with jabs then we did one round (set) of each hit/kick. Then we went to the bags and did the same thing. Then some hard jumps and stretches.... 5 sets of 3 min fast jumprope.

Ended with 5 sets of jarring - freaking awesome... I wanna go kick some butt to practice my new moves.

My body was so worked that during the very last set I started getting sick to my stomach. Cece said that means I had a great workout.

I was sweating and hurting but it was awesome and Im doing it again and again and again.

They said I was a natural and its probably due to my dancing (my manager happened to be there practicing and they all knew about my dancing) Im much more flexible than I thought I was...

All in all I FREAKING LOVE IT!!!!

Glad you enjoyed it. Don't be surprised if you are sore tomorrow in places you didn't know existed. It does make you feel like you could conquer the world...
