    Default $1 Usd = $1 Cad

First time in over 30 years. Looks like the Fed interest rate cut the other day had an unintended consequence.

So when are our Canadians here going to come south of the border to shop for some bargains?

^^^ they better do it quickly ! Because of the globalization of economies and commodities, the 10% appreciation in the CDN$ vs the US dollar is quickly going to be wiped out by 10% US dollar denominated price increases for anything involving high energy content, basic commodities, etc. Exchange rates are basically a zero sum game where 10% US dollar devaluation = 10% US dollar price inflation (eventually).

All I am going to say is I jumped for joy when I saw the Canadian Dollar was par.

People keep saying it is going to kill our economy. I don't think it will. We have just as many resources in Canada as the US has. Also the Americans will still continue to come to Canada just the way they were before.

All I can say is ... keep dreaming ! This simply isn't going to happen. On the personal spending front, every percent that the Loonie rises relative to the Buck is a 1% price increase for Americans on the Canadian side of the border. It was one thing for American customers to be drawn across the border to buy US$14 full contact lap dances, but at a price of US$20 they can get the same dances at home.

In terms of commodities like oil and gas and metals, these are world priced ... thus you are correct that Americans will keep buying Canadian oil and gas and metals because they have no alternative.

However, where Canadian MANUFACTURED products are concerned, not. The auto plants in Ontario, the appliance plants in Quebec etc. have now become the most expensive plants to operate in terms of US dollar denominated costs when compared to equivalent auto and appliance plants on the US side of the border. I can guarantee you that the big 3 auto makers are already making plans to shut down Canadian plants rather than shutting down additional US plants. And independent Canadian manufacturing companies i.e. Bombardier will find themselves in a similar situation i.e. trying to sell a product that has suddenly become 14% more expensive in US dollar terms than it was 6 months ago to US customers in competition with US made products that have not increased in US dollar price.

Canada has a much worse problem than America does in regard to an 'incomplete' home economy. Way more than half of the businesses in Canada depend on exports to the USA for their sales volume and profits. With a 14% instant 'price increase' for all Canadian products due to the exchange rate shift, these Canadian businesses will have a choice of 'eating' the 'price increase' out of their own profit margins or downsizing to reflect the loss of their former export sales to the US.

I agree that you haven't seen any instant effects, because the business decision cycle takes a while to percolate such changes. However, if this keeps up for a year, Canadian businesses will be in deep s#!t ! The strong Loonie will cause the same results as the strong Euro ... which you can look to as an example of what the Canadian economy will look like a year from now (i.e. the Euro rise vs the US dollar has about a year's head start !). I just started another thread on this very topic.

How long though has the Canadian dollar been so close to par the difference has hardly been noticed? Was it not at about 99 cents for the longest time(I know for the last two years going back and forth across the boarder i've hardly had any exchange rate on my money).

Im not saying your wrong Melonie but im not agreeing with you either. I think this will actually give Canada a fair playing feild. The US has had so much control over the world economy for so long.

I guess all we can really do is sit and wait.

As for the strip clubs. The Americans will always continue to come to Canada for the clubs for the simple fact that they can drink and see nude shows with full on contact. Plus with the legal drinking age being 18 and 19 in Canada we will still draw the younger crowd.

Don't get me started on the shit that goes on in the VIPs here lol.

I hear you on this subject of 'unfair competition' LOL !

As to the historical exchange rate, it has really only been 6 months since the Loonie seriously started to rise vs the dollar

6 months is too short of a time for corporate decision-making to become entrenched. 6 months is also too short of a time for the general public to start operating under a 'new paradigm'. However, I can guarantee you that if this persists for another couple of months, hundreds of thousands of Canadians will be doing their Christmas shopping in American malls ... and thousands of Canadian retail workers will be unemployed.

HA! You've never worked in south FL! I've seen shit in champange rooms here that would make most people's skin crawl.

I've only been to Canada once(for a few hours in Niagra Falls...so...not a huge frame of referance for me!) It was about 5 yrs ago and I remember my US dollars buying a LOT more there. What a change in just a few years.

Heh just a few weeks ago I walked in on a girl fucking a guy while sucking another one and giving another a hand job... all at the same time. That was mild compared to some shit i've seen And this is supposed to be the city of zero contact

ANYWAY yea im looking forward to shopping on Monday in the US lol.

But I also think that once the dollar stays at par Canada will be lowering prices to make things a more even fair playing field.

Yea I do remember when the American dollar was worth almost double the Canadian...

I don't know I don't think this will destroy Canada... there are more oil rigs starting up now as our oil industry is making a comeback.

Bah this is why I stay out of Dollar Den I can't seem to get my thoughts out properly lol.

    Nothing like multi-tasking!!

I watched one girl get melted butter from the kitchen, then proceed to butter up her ass so the custie could stick in the glass cover from his cigar. Then brag to everyone that see..she is NOT a whore. Because she didnt let him stick his dick in. Of course she said she would have for an extra $100.

So, do you guys think the US dollar will be going up any time soon? I have US currency that I'd like to exchange for CAN, but want to know if I should wait, or do it now. Any advice? I suppose I could take doc-catfish's advice and go shopping in NY?!?

I used to LOVE hitting the MAC (and other) stores in Canada because of the exchange rate. I'm kinda bummed about this.

Oh goodness, wait (years) to exchange your USD to CAD, if you can!

I'm minorly bummed...a good chunk of my income is in USD, so it's kind of annoying, but it gives me incentive to not exchange it, and keep it in savings. So, in the long run, it's fine.

I have a big ol' shopping spree in Seattle upcoming! SO FUN!

And now I can be uber-snarky when American retailers reject my Canadian pennies and nickels.

    Feature costumes for sale!
