    Exclamation Monosodium Glutamate

    Just a heads up about MSG...and why you should avoid it...and the other "tricks" they use to slip it by you on the ingredients labels. You can get more info at Wikipedia. Here is another good website for MSG information

    A 1995 FDA-commissioned report acknowledged that "An unknown percentage of the population may react to MSG and develop MSG symptom complex, a condition characterized by one or more of the following symptoms:

    * burning sensation in the back of the neck, forearms and chest
    * numbness in the back of the neck, radiating to the arms and back
    * tingling, warmth and weakness in the face, temples, upper back, neck and arms
    * facial pressure or tightness
    * chest pain
    * headache
    * nausea
    * rapid heartbeat
    * bronchospasm (difficulty breathing)
    * drowsiness
    * weakness.

    A 2002 report from researchers at Hirosaki University in Japan found rats fed on diets high in MSG suffered eye damage. Lead researcher Hiroshi Ohguro said the findings might explain why, in eastern Asia, there is a high rate of normal-tension glaucoma.

    Under current FDA regulations, when MSG is added to a food, it must be identified as "monosodium glutamate" in the label's ingredient list. If however MSG is part of a spice mix that is purchased by another company, the manufacturer does not have to list the ingredients of that spice mix and may use the words "flavorings" or "spices". Even food that uses the "no msg" label may therefore have MSG that is added from a spice mix from another company under current FDA regulations.

    Also, MSG is only one of several forms of free glutamate used in foods. The free glutamic acid component of MSG may also be present in a wide variety of other additives, including: hydrolyzed vegetable proteins, autolyzed yeast, hydrolyzed yeast, yeast extract, soy extracts, protein isolate, "spices" and "natural flavorings."

    For this reason, FDA considers labels such as "No MSG" or "No Added MSG" to be misleading if the food contains ingredients that are sources of free glutamate, such as hydrolyzed protein.[6]

    In 1993, FDA proposed adding the phrase "(contains glutamate)" to the common or usual names of certain protein hydrolysates that contain substantial amounts of glutamate.[6] For example, if the proposal were adopted, hydrolyzed soy protein would have to be declared on food labels as "hydrolyzed soy protein (contains glutamate)."

    In 1994, FDA received a citizen's petition requesting changes in labelling requirements for foods that contain MSG or related substances.[6] The petition asks for mandatory listing of MSG as an ingredient on labels of manufactured and processed foods that contain manufactured free glutamic acid. It further asks that the amount of free glutamic acid or MSG in such products be stated on the label, along with a warning that MSG may be harmful to certain groups of people. FDA has not yet taken action on the petition.

    This stuff is nasty. And my roomate in college used to buy bottles of it at the Korean market and add it to the food she cooked at home. (MY food usually, but thats a whole other story)

    I had that "burning sensation on the back of the neck" years ago after eating egg drop soup. At the time, I didn't know the cause. But after hearing that soups at Chinese restaurants are typically HIGH in MSG, I've avoided them all together. I just remember it freaking me out...kind of like a panic attack.

    Years ago, I used to eat at a Chinese restaraunt buffet. I always got a nasty, all-day headache that didn't respond to any type of aspirin product.
    Thanks, Venus.

    This is why I never go to cheap shitty Asian places... that and the food sucks there anyway. Good Asian restaurants don't use this stuff so don't let it put you off Asian restaurants entirely.

    And ditto on the chemical sweeteners. That stuff scares me and tastes like chemicals anyway.

    Just be aware that just because the restaurant doesn't use MSG, it doesn't mean that the pre-packaged stuff they use in their foods does not contain MSG.

    I'm finding that we are better off not eating out and with me preparing all of our foods at home. Sad...but Whirlerz...I get the same headache and my ankles swell majorly within 20-30 minutes after eating anything with any amount of MSG in it.

    yea, that stuff is the devil

    i get REALLY sick. my migraines are 50x worse on it. msg gives me the vomiting/aura migraines.

    i have been really careful the last year in eliminating (well trying to) all of that from the entire families diet. it sucks though, it's in almost EVERYTHING!

    i've even taken it further with the "bad" stuff and almost completely eliminated foods with hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup.

    Since modern commercial MSG is produced by fermentation of starch, sugar beets, sugar cane, or molasses, does that make the reaction a sort of food allergy?

    *shrug* Myself i've never had any sort of reaction to it.

    Thanks for sharing the info... I'd cut MSG out of my diet a long time ago but, I never knew any of the aboved mentioned additives masked it.

    I just read the ingredients on my baked doritos and MSG was right on there. How unexpected, ugh. There goes one of my fav treats.

    Thats explains why on Friday, after eating my sandwich with baked doritos, I had a weird numbness in my legs and feet on my way to work. I actually drove around the block and chilled for an hour before just going in 'cause I thought I was having work jitters. It made no sense to me because work has been great lately.

    It's everywhere! I guess I don't always react to it, but after eating at certain places I'd get this PAIN in my back, it would tighten up and tingle and I would feel nauseous. I try and avoid stuff with a 'flavor packet' because that seems to me 'bag of MSG'. Does it have some sort of preservative purpose or it is just there to give us pain (and an overly salty taste)?

    I'm putting those diff. names of MSG on a list with the codes for hydrogenated oils and bringing it to the grocery with me!

    It's in my veggie burgers!

    News flash!! MSG can also be labeled as "other natural flavors". The saltier a food is, the higher the chances it contains MSG. MSG is "supposed" to be a natural flavor enhancer. LOL

    AND...

    The next wave of hastily approved "MSG replacers" you may wish to avoid will be Senomyx.
