Default Chi Is Killing My Hair

I love my flat iron and will not give it up. But it's destroying my hair. I've been using the Chi thermal protection products and have discovered that they are CRAP. I'm reluctant to try any new products without certified SW recommendations. What can I put on my hair to protect it from damage?

BTW, I alternate between Redken All Soft and Smooth Down shampoos and conditioners. On work days, I use the heavy cream conditioners of those lines. I think I'm good to go in this arena.

The only thing I can suggest is to let your hair dry naturally...gently blow dry it straight and then take the straight iron over it then.

And don't style your hair on the days you don't work...don't wash your hair everyday.

Other than that...there is not really that much you can do. Heat styling damages your hair no matter what you put in it.

I am not a big fan of Redken products either. They always seemed to dry my hair out.

Thats the best way to keeping it healthy. No matter which one you use if you're using it often enough it can damage your hair. Regular trims also help stop split ends as well.

i had a chi for forever, but i have noticed that my hair is healthier and longer now that i use a T3. when i say longer, i mean less is damaged when i go to my stylist for a trim so she doesn't have to cut as much off (i'm trying to grow out my hair).

A CHI iron fried my hair as well. I would go with a different iron. I love my FHI. Soooooo much better. Also try a oil based straightening lotion instead of the normal silicone ones. Huge diff.

I remember Emily posted a while ago that she liked the T3 better because it doesn't damage her hair like the Chi.

I have a Chi but I don't use it much. I wash my hair every other day or sometimes every 2 days and I NEVER blowdry it - blowdrying is the worst thing you can do to your hair. Also, washing every day makes your scalp produce more oil while drying your hair more. Wash it less, and your scalp will begin producing less oil so you won't NEED to wash as much, and your hair will be more healthy.

I'd like to hear from Emily if she's still as happy with her T3 as she was before...

I guess all of my advice has been said before...

I wash my hair the night before so it will be dry by the next day. I don't wash my hair every day. I only style it on the days that I work and when I go out for the weekend. For product, I use something called Tonic by Bumble and Bumble. It's as light as water and has tea tree oil and stuff in it to hydrate my scalp and make the rest of my hair softer. If my hair's especially being a pain in the butt, I use a defrizzer (Avena) to help it lay down so I don't have to go over it with the iron so many times.

    *sigh*

Looks like I'll be switching to a T3.

I do wash my hair everyday. I have oily skin, oily scalp, oily body. If I take a shower at night, I have body odor by the next morning. My sister does not wash her hair everyday and she gets stinky. My family has a natural funk. Smell my dad. It's overbearing.

If I don't flat iron my hair for a while, my hair is great. As my hair is wavy, I may start using a curling iron on my ends instead of apply 400 degree heat to my entire head.

Perhaps you can also look into using a dry shampoo?

I am blonde and I use baby powder on my roots in between washes, so I can keep it straight longer and wash it less often! For girls with other hair colors, I know there are a few dry shampoos on the market but I am not really familiar with which ones. Anyway they should also take away the smell, I think.

My hair smells like baby powder pretty often, lol I laughed once a guy told me it smelled like shampoo..oh how little they know lol

If you can afford it, get a Japanese Thermal Reconstruction. It's a straight perm that lasts for about a year.

When my hair isn't really too greasy, and needs a rinse-through to get rid of sweat smell, I actually wash it with conditioner only! And it works just fine. It does the trick with the hair smelliness...without stripping it dry from shampoo.

If I HAVE to get my hair super-clean, I always first add some conditioner through my hair...then add the shampoo. It makes the whole process less drying.

You might want to try using Remi/real hair extensions in the straight style...it stays straight...and that way maybe when you blend it with your normal hair, you can get a straighter look (though it's not 100% straight) w/out having to use the iron? Not sure if your hair is curly,. then obviously it wouldn't really work.

About Redken messing up hair..well I like Redken...but try to avoid products that have alcohol in them. For example, for some reason Pantene has alcohol in almost all their products... I found some V05 brand stuff including their leave-in detangler doesn't have alcohol (it's listed as cetyl alcohol, etc). They might include alcohol in it becase it increases sshine, but I don't need that drying stuff in it! So read the labels to make sure...

Agreed with the advice to avoid any hair product with alcohol or silicone. That stuff is bad for your hair!

If you must wash hair daily, then shower and do your makeup before work, let your hair airdry on the way to work, then style it in the dressing room. That's what I do sometimes and it's less damaging than blow-drying AND ironing. If you get there early the dressing room isn't so crowded...

I'd also seriously consider leaving your natural waves and working with them. You can use products to enhance the curl and scrunch it up a bit, and that is a sexy look that lots of men love! I do soooo well when I wave my hair and leave it a bit messy-looking for work! Much better than heat-styling.

Also, what about showering the night before, letting your hair partially dry then putting it in those soft rollers you sleep in, and shower again before work just before taking the rollers down? I like to do this sometimes, and when I take the rollers down all I have to do is shake it out a bit, run my fingers through it and it looks great. I like to add some mousse or setting lotion to damp hair before rolling it up to help hold the curls.

Lots of options to avoid heat-style abuse...

    yes! so very happy.

It's not perfect, but my hair feels a lot healthier, and I use it almost every day. Sometimes I touchup with the CHI and my hair will feel like straw.

I think if you want a t3 you can buy them off the ebay for much cheaper (brand new too.) I bought mine off of sephora.com, but for my sister I bought hers off of ebay. I love the T3!!! It's the best flat iron I've used, and I used to work in a salon we tried out a few, but I bought this one.

Well, if you have to wash your hair everyday, only shampoo the roots. A hair mask may help you out as well.

Hey, I have the T3 and bought it off ebay after reading everyone raving about it.

Here's my problem with it, the male to female plastic thing ( sorry I don't know what to call it ), located between the on/off switch and the plates, snags my hair when I clamp it down to straighten it.

    See pic

Is this the same T3? I noticed when browsing Sephora.com that their T3 was by Bespoke.

Mine, I think is not! Have I been using the wrong one the whole time?

As to the OP, the Chi protectant is crap, I use a heat protection spray by ION, I get it form Sally's. It can be greasy so I just use it on my ends.

I'm sold. I'm selling my CHI and getting a T3. This is how long my hair is and I'll be damned before I let it break off. $200 for a flat iron is a deal compared to $1500 of extensions if I go bald.
