Default Are you f*ing kidding me?: Tuition costs

What is education worth to you? Mountains of debt? Loans so big you'll still be paying when you roll over in your grave?

I just saw on the news by 2010 (I'll be transferring in about <4years) the state of CA is going to raise prices by 15% or more?! I am so pissed about this. There is no way in hell I'm going to pay these inflated fees. I had hopes of going to UCSD. But now that dream is too far out of reach. Right now it stands to be a little over 3K per quarter. Thats already high.

If education is so important in this country why are they trying to price everyone out of it? Loans, financial aid, grants etc can only do so much. This seriously pisses me off. There will be more links as the media posts them. I learned this, this morning.

It's actually even worse. Some of the fees are to be raised 4-15% each year over the next 3 years.

God I hear ya' TM. I complain all the time about tuition costs to anyone willing to hear me bitch about it. I pay appx 3-4 g per semester and I take about 4 classes (12 CH) each time. It's harsh. Im not always sure it's gonna be worth it unless the raise the salaries of the career field Im going into (teaching) and I dont see that happening soon.
I worry about tuition costs for when my kid is in colllege *wince*

How sad is it that we're already contributing to an RESP and the baby's not due until January. I'm terrified of what tuition will be in 18 years.

Actually, in this day and age, very few jobs require you to have a college education to make money. In the specialized fields, if you have a master's or doctorate, you may get paid lots of money, but you just as likely may not.

If you want to become rich, become a professional athlete or a movie star.

tuition is just going to keep going up......though I hate to say it, that little piece of paper is somewhat important when your starting out......once your established your degree is usually "useless".

I've found that from years I graduated (6 years), that what really is important is if the person has enough common-sense to handle business matters.

Yup, rising tuition costs are good for my business! Families see the projections, and start investing early, hopefully with me!

Where did we get this idea that parents are responsible for paying college tuition? I couldn't get financial aid because the government felt that my parents should pay for my tuition, even though they don't make that much and they still had three young sons to raise. I never expected my parents to pay for my tuition and I don't understand why so many people act like that's a requirement. Are you an adult now or not? Once you're grown, you need to support yourself.

The government too. Don't forget the federal loans.

Exactly. I have no obligation to pay for my future child's tuition, although I will do what I can. Most likely they will have to get mucho financial aide, as I'll probably be still trying to pay off MY loans with the rising tuition costs!

Because parents want to see their children be successful and get educated. They want to be able to save for their kid's education instead of forcing their kids to indebt themselves with loans as soon as they turn 18.

Its VERY important, and if the US government doesn't provide much help for higher education, it is up to the family to save for their children, if they value such a thing.

Wow, Yek, I really can't empathize with your point at all, expecially considering that you got stuck with lots of debt from school. Wouldn't you want your children to not have to go through that?

Perhaps its a cultural thing. My parents saved and paid for my education because it was absolutely, 100% important for me to go to college. They didn't pay for my grad school, but I was able to cover that myself from working and stripping. Its a big deal for russians.

^^ Or the HELL i had to go through to prove I did not have any family help, so was entitled to more grants. It's like, unbelievavble that an 18 year old would not have any family contribution for tuition. I actually had to have my mother write a letter stating she did not help me in any way, and had no p[lans to do so. I also had to prove I worked, and prove I paid my own biills by showing power/gas ect. bill swith my name.

I am already about 40grand in debt with student loans, plus I will need $10,000 for the rest of this year, and then a total of $65,000 for nursing.

So when it's all said and done, I will be in over 100 grand debt with student loans...just for a fucking nursing degree.

The way I see it, I will go through hell, and it will be worse when my children are ready to go to college, so there's probably no way around them going through hell either.

It sucks, so does life sometimes, but you get through it. I guess it also builds character. *grumble*

Actually I have no student debt whatsoever. I decided against my first choice, Tulane, because I couldn't afford it, and took out a $3000 loan to do my freshman year at a state university. When I considered what all those loans would amount to, I transferred home to a cheaper university (that also happened to have a better major for me), and worked through school. I paid off that $3000 loan as soon as I graduated before interest began to accrue, and paid for the rest of it as I went. I waited tables for most of it and worked a hotel operator job towards the end, full-time, and graduated with honors. For my Master's, my then-husband and I spent a year before I started, working and saving so that I wouldn't have to work or take out any loans. It definitely made me a better student and a better person, and taught me the value of my degrees.

Most of the students I went to school with whose parents were paying their tution had no respect whatsoever for the university or their education. They'd stay out all night to drink and skip class in the morning and squeak by with the bare minimum, just so they could stay in this limbo between adulthood and childhood.

I have no problem with parents CHOOSING to pay for their kids' tuition if they want to, but I don't agree with the mentality that you just have to. I always felt that whoever financially supports you, owns you, and I never wanted my family to dictate what I wasn't allowed to study or do. The only way to grow up and be an adult with the freedom to run your own life is to do it on your own.

Gah. I pay about $4000 a semester for tuition and the same for my housing plus books and such. Thankfully, I do get grants and stuff, but I still have $16,000 in loans so far, for three years. That's why I went back to dancing.

Fair enough. For some reason I thought there were school loans, my mistake.

And I do see what you mean about spoiled rotten kids not appreciating their education, I saw a lot of freshmen driving convertible beemers outside of the dorms.

The people that come to me wanting to save for their kids education are not the type of parents that spoil their children rotten. I'm not saying it can't happen. But most of them have worked hard and saved hard, and teach good values to their kids. But who knows.

I don't think that saving for your kid's education will make them unappreciative brats. That's why I like investment vehicles that can be used for anything, and am not too fond of 529's (sometimes I'll use 'em)

Like I said, I've got nothing against paying for your kids' tuition if you can and you want to. But I disagree with the widespread mindset that you automatically have to.

It's really irritating. My boyfriend is going the loan route. He can't file independent until a certain age even though he's receiving no help from his parents. His dad was able to when he was in college and it wasn't even that long ago.

I disagree, but we can agree to disagree. I would rather that Americans valued saving to educate their children, rather than blowing all of their cash on stupid shit, creating a poor example for the future generations.

Multigenerational family care is a big thing in most other cultures. Not so much here. I've had this conversation several times with clients in the last few days. The first being with a couple from Mexico, the next with an Indian couple. Its fresh on my mind, and I'm just spewing my opinion.

    I respect your beliefs.

I'm probably just excessively independent. I always have been. It's gotten me into trouble before.

Yep. Here it's 24. That's part of why I waited so long, then life got in the way. At 30 I do get pretty good grants. Has he tryed to file forms indicating he's independant?

    Too true!!!

I enjoy school, after 7 years I have managed to figure that much out. But sometimes looking at my returns on investment of time and money, I just wanna have a job where i get to do fascinating things...AND make money.

I have to give it up to community college, I got a huge bang for my buck last year. And it was cheap as hell. But we are at the point where only the vry rich or the very poor can afford college (the very poor because of needs based financial aid). And these high schoolers have super stiff competition getting into a good undergrad, not that it matters, you can learn a lot anywhere. But still, it is crazy to be thinking about every high school activity as a deal maker for admissions. Kids should enjoy high school, I look back on it fondly.

Oh, and Kaylinn, nursing is a great field...you'll make it all back!

my thinking is that parents are supposed to want better for their kids than they had themselves. if you had to struggle, shouldnt you want better for your children? i mean, literally, if given the choice, parents should be the ones going without, not the kids. i guess to each her own, though.
