    Default Allergies, f*cking miserable!!!!

I don't know how things are in other regions of the country or other countries but here in the southeast US the ragweed is killing me. I am constantly sneezing and blowing my nose. My eyes and nose burn and itch like hell. Claritin offers some relief, any other OTC remedy suggestions?

Most of the allergens here are really high right now as well, especially mold. The only thing that works for me is benadryl, but it knocks me out so I can only take it at night. Hope you feel better.

Yep. I can def. relate. Man, the mold here sometimes! I take Alavert, for day sometimes, it's a non-drowsy formula. I also take (try to anyways) at least 3,000 mg. of vit. C. and of course, 2 garlic capsules a day. When I find my herbal book, I post what they say about allergies. Have you considered a netti pot? There's a thread in this forum about. Basically, you clean your nostrils w/salt water.

I LOVE Zyrtec, but I think it's still prescription-only. My second choice is Claritin, but you said you've already tried that. Have you seen an allergist, to make certain that you have seasonal allergies? I ask because I just went to one for the first time this week, after my "seasonal" allergies flared up big time. He tested me for the common indoor & outdoor allergens, and what do you know... the only thing I'm allergic to is dust mites. The scratch-test-thing showed a MAJOR reaction for those guys, but none at all to any pollens, trees, molds, etc. So the whole time I've been worrying about my "seasonal" allergies, I should have just been washing my shit in hot water and wrapping my mattress in plastic. I'm actually heading out to Macy's right now to buy a plastic mattress cover and new mattress pad (have to get rid of my awesome foam eggcrate because it apparently harbors too many wee beasties ). I'll tell you though, even washing my pillows and blankets in scalding water and vacuuming the house after putting in a new vacuum filter has made quite a difference.

Anyway, that's just my allergy situation, sorry for rambling. I'm honestly thankful that that's what it is... I can take anti-dust mite measures, but I cannot change the pollen count!

    Feel better.

Greenidlady1- The first line treatment for allergic rhinitis is steroid based nasal sprays. A few examples are Nasacort and Flonase. These are all prescription only. The 2nd line treatment is a second generation anti-histamine such as Claritin, but the current research shows that Claritin is not as effective as Allegra or Zyrtec. Unfortunately, these also require prescriptions.

For the itchy/burning eyes, I like to prescribe Relestat eye drops which block histamine receptors in the eyes. Hope this helps.

I would suggest taking claritin while you are awake and taking a benadry when you go to sleep. Do not do this every day but 2 or 3 times a week. Just remember to drink plenty of fluids so you do not get dehydrated. Also you might want to try a childrens dose of benadry 12.5 mg.

Totally perma-sick with allergies here in Texas also...I take Singulair,Astilin nasal spray, you have to keep changing allergy meds as they can become ineffective after a few months.
Recently a really sweet girl at Whole Foods" who also has severe allergies told me about this herbal concoction, you can put some in a bowl and add hot water, drape a towel over and steam for a bit,I SWEAR it's really helping!:
