    Default My little boy's eyes.

This school year my lil guy has had a really hard time getting into his work. He's been fading out in class, losing interest and goofing off. Which is SO not like him!

And it has (had) me worried.

Then I recalled over the sumemr he was telling me about "the lights" he sees when he gets outside. Especially in the car he says "Don't you see those mom? They're all over, spotty lights."

And a few nights ago I was crossing my eyes at him and he asked me how I do that. So I told him to take his finger, keep his eyes on it, and bring it closer to his face, so his eyes would cross.
Well one eye did it, the other stayed looking straight ahead, didn't even move. Over and over, it never even wiggled.

This had me worried, along with the spotty light thing and his lack of enthusiasm with school work. So I took him to get his eye's tested today. Now I have to take him to a pediatric eye specialist. I'm sure it's nothing too serious, but I worry so much as it is....they said one of his eyes isn't developing, and that he may need to wear a patch sometimes. Glasses for sure.

And on the upside, I'm sort of glad that he needs glasses and it's not a behaviour problem. The downside is the doctor scared me when he said he was worried about the light flashes and wants a specialist to look in his eye.

    Argh.... momminess is hard.

youre right, be greatful that it is an eye problem and not something more serious. on the other hand, that still sucks and i can only imagine worrying about a child. i worry about the children i teach who arent even my own, and my kitties, but the idea of worrying about my own child is almost too much! good luck & keep us updated.

I hope the "spotty lights" are nothing, and I'm glad that you caught his eye problems early. As a child, I was quick to learn and enthusiastic about school until about the 2nd grade, but then I suddenly stopped "paying attention" according to my teachers. In reality, I had problems with both my right eye and right ear and just didn't know what was going on in the classroom. Luckily, the problem was eventually figured out a year later, but for a full year I was treated like a "problem" student.

I say good for you for being so attentive and thoughtful about your child's health needs.

My bestfriend's little cousin had something similar. She couldnt move one eye in like you mentioned... they gave her glasses and it corrected the problem.
I hope thats all it is hon. (((((((((HUGS))))))))))

Aw, Momminess sounds hard . I am sure it'll be alright though.
I wish you and your little guy the best. Keep us updated. I am curious about what the "spotty lights" are.

I'm sending you and your little guy some hugs and positive thoughts. Glasses should do though. Hang in there, not easy being a parent.

Awww. My sister had to wear glasses at age 4, then wear a patch AND glasses, then back to glasses.

Astigmatism makes light reflect and bounce off in weird ways. It was explained to me with a great diagram when I saw the Dr. I got lazik in 2006, omg it actually worked. But maybe hopefully the spotty lights are from 'normal' vision problems. Does he have light eyes?

Wow, thank you all so much! I'm such a worrier! I get it from my mom, who is WAY worse (she's allready called me seven times today with all the other "possible" problems this could be a sign of! ) So I'm trying to not get sucked into that line of thought.

Alaska, no he has beautiful deep brown eyes with golden flecks in them.

I think the hardest part right now is how many times I griped at him for spacing out in class, sitting too close to the tv, writing too big and sloppy on his school work. Argh. I know, nothing I can do and I didn't know at the time, but I still feel bad.

Today was so very hard. I'll admit, my guy is super sensative. Borderline momma's boy. But when they did the eye test, and did the thing where they shoot a spray of air into the eye, he started crying, looked at me and said "You said none of this would hurt me." aaaaaagggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh!

Then they decided they had to dialate his pupil, because they were really worried about the "spotty lights" thing. They could only get the drops into one eye because he was so scared about what it was going to do to his eye. It was a mess.

My "lil" guy is huge. No joke, I am 6' tall and he come to my chest. He's only 7.
So he looks so much older, and sometimes I forget, and I know other people who don't know him forget, that he is just a little kid. Scared and super sensative. And right now my protect my kid mode is in full force which is bad for my "You have to do this because it's important and will help you" mode. Bah...
I called my mom, hoping she could give me a little pep talk about all of this. That went very backwards. I called my aunt since her son had to get glasses not long ago, but he just went into eye masters, got tested, walked out with glasses.

In fact, my aunt even said "Wow, they're sending him to a specialist? Geez, I wonder what's wrong with him!"

No more calling the relatives...so thanks girls. It means a lot to me. And like I said, it's probably going to be nothing too serious, it's just the worst ting when something is wrong with someone you love and you can't fix it. Can't stop it. ya know...

Last summer my son had to have surgery on his eye's. One was always pointed toward his nose and the other would be "normal". After his surgery he had to wear a patch and glasses to make his eye muscles stronger. He now only wears glasses and both of his eye's move correctly.

The surgery wasn't too hard on him. the hardest part was keeping his hands away from his eye's because he said that they itched. By the way is was 3 weeks away from his 7th birthday when the surgery took place.

everything will be ok. children are incredibly resiliant.

but next time maybe tell him that it might hurt a little, but that he'll be able to see more clearly later. and maybe plan some time for just the two of you after it. My mother always took me for icecream and a special treat, like a new dress (a movie is a good idea) after the doctors

EE, I don't have any kids, so I can't give you any advice, but I want to say that you are an awesome mom. I know that your son is probably a little young to read what you're writing on a stripper forum, but I hope someday you show him your posts... really! I know that might seem like a trite thing to say, but I mean it. In a meantime, continue to show him you love him in ways he'll understand, while explaining that some things in life suck but are really beneficial, such as doctors and homework and eating your vegetables and stuff. And for yourself... try to relax! I can imagine its hard to watch your little boy be scared of doctors, but until/unless there's a serious diagnosis (which there won't be... knock wood!) this is all just routine, if unpleasant, stuff.

Hmm, so I guess I did have some advice after all.

Lola, that is a great idea! He responds really well to potential treats (read: bribes)

We found a doctor that will see him immediatly, today even so I will find out what's going on with him then.

Now, if I can just stay off the phone with my mom between now and then!

OMG I would just die! You're strong for not breaking into tears! I would have. In fact, when they did Kembra's PKU test where they prick the ankle, I cried. There is nothing sadder than your kid in pain.

On another note, when I was about 9 or so, my mom took me to get eye tests because things looked really small to me when I was tired. It was weird - kind of like I was tripping or something. We never really figured out what that was, but the doctor said I would need glasses for sure by 16 and everything. Well, here I am at 28 and my vision is still perfect. And I don't have that weird thing anymore. Maybe your son is talking about those little squigglys you see when you look at the sky (?).

    YAY YAY YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We jsut got back from the doc's. Yes, he has a very weak eye, but they don't think he's going to need a patch. They will check again after he's been wearing the glasses for a couple of months to see if it's getting worse.

They managed to get his eye dialated and nothing spooky going on in there! Yay!

So, (big breath) everything is alright, the guy will have to wear glasses for the rest of his life (unless he get's surgery later in life) or contacts when he get's older. But he is safe, nothing dangerous going on. I almost feel silly for getting so worked up over, but when that first doc said "We can't treat his problem here, you need to take him to a specialist" well, I got nutty over it.

He's excited to get his glasses, he picked out these really cool ones that have this neon orange stripe on the sides.

His eye sight right now is 20/60 I think he said. I can't belive it was so bad! I had no idea!

Thanks again to all of you for your happy thoughts.

Oh oh, for those of you who asked, the spotty lights

It was explained to me this way "His right eye is not sending the right signal to his brain, much like a curcuit board not connecting. Every now and then a signal gets through, but since the other eye is so very dominant, the right eye really has not had any reason to work. The random signals are what make the spotty lights, with corrective glasses that give the right eye a chance to work, these should stop."
