I'm inclined to say Japanese because you'd be able to work with big transnational companies that can afford to pay big bucks for their translators. Think electronics.

Linguistics is certainly interesting!
If you think school is hard, try being stupid.
Hard to say. Spanish is pretty common, so I'm sure Spanish-English translators are just as common. Japanese definitely has a market, but there are very few Japanese business people who haven't made it a point to learn English...
...but I'd say of the two, Japanese fo' sho'.

You don't want to study linguistics necessarily, then, you want to study foreign languages. I think. The Other Owner can probably tell you everything you want to know about this. And he'll also probably tell you to study Russian.

I'd honestly suggest Mandarin Chinese or Arabic. A lot of people already know Japanese, although it is worth a shot. With Arabic, you could go into intelligence or oil. We all know that China is the next big superpower too...
Oh, if you decide to go into Japanese, PM me, I can hook you up with a lot of language learning materials like Pimsleur and Rosetta Stone.

Arabic is kinda of tricky because there are actually allot of languages in that area of the world.
Susan is correct you want to study Foreign Language, linguistics : the study of human speech including the units, nature, structure, and modification of language
(. Basically what makes a language a language. Why does english and the romantic languages use letters while indo-asian languages use graphs/sybols.
Yeah, you want to major in the language itself, not linguistics. I agree that Chinese or Arabic will be in higher demand, but if it's got to be Japanese or Spanish, then I'd go with Japanese. Bilingual Spanish-English speakers are a dime a dozen already.

^Amen. Linguistics majors are a joke. It's basically a modified English major. I have a few friends who majored in linguistics, and scoff at it all the time. Go with the language itself.
I've always wanted to get a master's in linguistics for fun, one day.
