    Default Does chiropracty work?

I'm having problems with my back and neck. There is nothing a medical doctor can do. About 2 weeks ago, I pulled my neck and couldn't look to the right. I went to a chiropractor. He did a few adjustments and my neck had normal movement again (with some pain though).

So, the chiropractor suggested that I come in 3x/week for 6 weeks to realign my spine. My lower back and neck hurt A LOT, but I am reluctant to spend $1200 on treatments and have it not work, or worse need 6 more weeks of treatments and spend more money.

I believe the chiropractor I went to is honest. He seems very reputable. I don't think he'd rip me off or give me substandard treatment.

I'm just not sure what to do with my body. I already practice yoga and Pilates. What more can I do?

What do you think? What have been your experiences?

A lot of my family have reported wonders with chiropractors. It's worth a try. The general consensus is that they crack, they knead, the apply pressure. It hurts, but somehow it works.

Watch out for the ones who give shifty promises, like curing blindness or aural spectral stuff. Stick to one that will help you with back, neck, and other neuropathies.

I have been seeing a chiropractor for several years now and while i used to spend everyday in pain with my neck and back I now rarely have any pain even now that I have started dancing for up to 12 hours per night in 6-7 inch stilettos - so yes it definately works for me.

I have mild scoliosis. I started off going twice per week, then once per week, then once per fortnight and now I have been going once a month for maintenance for a few years.

i'm all about chiros , but the $1200 seems kinda a lot, when i used to work 5 days a week i had to go to one, but one visit would realaign me just fine til the next time i hurt myself, so i don't know i guess its individual....meanwhile, take you shoes off every chance you get, dances , vips, etc., that makes the biggest difference to my back

We have a chiro guy who comes into the club sometimes and gives us adjustments. I can never tell a difference after and it freaks me out to hear my bones crack.

I had a very persistent neck thing dating from a college injury. It was becoming chronic. Anyhow, I went to a chiropractor (I had never gone to one before and was very suspicious they could do anything useful) for a course of treatment very much like what they are suggesting for you. Upshot: 10 years later and I've never had that neck issue again. So, in this one instance, it worked.

oh, but whatever you do, don't let them adjust your neck(like when they pull on your head) there was an article in womans day ithink? that the neck adjustment is extremely dangerous because theres a chance they'll rip some major artery, there's been some deaths and they're trying to push that into a law..so just be aware

My boyfriend swears by it. He went 3x a week at first, now he only goes once a week. I've been wanting to go, but I'm a little freaked out by someone cracking my bones and what not.

Thanks everyone for your input. I've decided to do it. I researched several doctors and found one I trust. The total cost would be $850 for the entire treatment plus $75/week for deep tissue massage. In a about a month, I should be shiny and new, with factory seal.

Cool. Let us know how it goes because I am considering chiropracty too. Right now I get massages 2-3 times per week. Otherwise I can hardly move cuz my muscles get super tight. I'm just reluctant because I have heard chiropracters can do more damage than they do good.

Some people have said, only go to a chiropracter who takes X-rays, but I'm sure there are no guarantees...

Any chiro worth his degree will take x-rays. I'd be wary of one that didnt.

I need to go more often then I do....but they always adust my neck(its where many of my worst problems are) without a problem. A chiro that knows what he is doing will not burst an artery...

And most chiro work is not do this for a month and you are all better....it's kind of an ongoing treatment type of thing(unless it is for a specific injury)

There was one death. One death in the millions upon millions of spinal adjustments. Compare that to spinal surgery.

I love my chiro. After the initial xray costs, it's $20 a visit. w00t! Totally helping my wrongly-curved neck, as well as my general back woes from auto-on-pedestrian accidents and dancing.

That's not true. There have been many more than one death. And there have certainly been many strokes from cervical spine manipulations. I see one every year or so.

What she said. For making you feel a little better, yeah. Think of them as you would a massage therapist.

But the claims that they can cure all manner of disease and disorder with spinal manipulation...quackery.

    I like this article because:
    1) "SPINE" is the leading medical journal dealing with the spine
    2) It is published by several chiropractors working with medical doctors
    3) It is a well designed study, looked at 30 years of data.

The conclusion is key....... yes, the risk for complication is small. But for something that only gives short term relief, if something does go wrong, that is a catastrophic injury or death. Kinda scary.

Manipulation and Mobilization of the Cervical Spine: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

    Spine. 21(15):1746-1759, August 1, 1996.
Hurwitz, Eric L. DC, PhD * ; Aker, Peter D. DC ++; Adams, Alan H. DC [S]; Meeker, William C. DC, MPH [//]; Shekelle, Paul G. MD, PhD *[P]
    Abstract:
Study Design: Cervical spine manipulation and mobilization were reviewed in an analysis of the literature from 1966 to the present.

Objectives: To assess the evidence for the efficacy and complications of cervical spine manipulation and mobilization for the treatment of neck pain and headache.

Summary of Background Data: Although recent research has demonstrated the efficacy of spinal manipulation for some patients with low back pain, little is known about its efficacy for neck pain and headache.

Methods: A structured search of four computerized bibliographic data bases was performed to identify articles on the efficacy and complications of cervical spine manual therapy. Data were summarized, and randomized controlled trials were critically appraised for study quality. The confidence profile method of meta-analysis was used to estimate the effect of spinal manipulation on patients' pain status.

Results: Two of three randomized controlled trials showed a short-term benefit for cervical mobilization for acute neck pain. The combination of three of the randomized controlled trials comparing spinal manipulation with other therapies for patients with subacute or chronic neck pain showed an improvement on a 100-mm visual analogue scale of pain at 3 weeks of 12.6 mm (95% confidence interval, -0.15, 25.5) for manipulation compared with muscle relaxants or usual medical care. The highest quality randomized controlled trial demonstrated that spinal manipulation provided short-term relief for patients with tension-type headache. The complication rate for cervical spine manipulation is estimated to be between 5 and 10 per 10 million manipulations.

Conclusions: Cervical spine manipulation and mobilization probably provide at least short-term benefits for some patients with neck pain and headaches. Although the complication rate of manipulation is small, the potential for adverse outcomes must be considered because of the possibility of permanent impairment or death.

For the back the only permanent relief I believe in is exercises prescribed in physical therapy to teach you how to be stronger in the areas that are weak. Then you will always be in control of keeping your own back healthy instead of becoming dependent on someone else to give you a quick fix. (When I had problems, I went to a recommended orthopedic doctor, he diagnosed me, and had me do physical therapy for a specified amount of time.)

Many, many times it's the muscles causing the problems, not the bones. For example, they are too tight and they are pulling on areas of your back and causing pain that way. In physical therapy they can help you figure that out and prescribe stretches for it and tell you exercises to stay away from.

I don't care much for chiropractors.

Some chiropractors, as with medical doctors, are quacks.

I agree that muscles do contribute to back problems. I am getting deep tissue massages in conjunction with adjustments. For my body, I think chiropracty would be useless without relaxed muscles. I've had courses of deep tissue massages. They helped but didn't do enough on their own.

When I began to practice Pilates, I felt better. Pilates improves posture and alignment, so I thought if these simple exercises help, what if had someone manipulate my spine.

Plus, I love getting my back cracked. God, it feels sooo gooood.

Also, your chiro will prob talk to you about this but investing in a good quality mattress and pillows will help a lot with neck and back problems. we spend so many hours asleep in bed, it pays to get a good one.

My Aunts friend was killed from it.

I personally do not trust Chiros... I have serious back and neck problems and went to a few different ones now and didn't feel much better. I've used massage therapy and acupuncture with much better results. FTR I have scoliosis and spina bifida among a zillion other back/neck issues.

I definately believe in chiropractic work as a means of 'teaching" your body proper alignment. However, I do feel that over time, your body can take over and do this for itself through means of proper stretching and the yogo. It can be very addicting as far as recieving. And as you know(DAMN EXPENSIVE). Sounds as if you are in a rather acute level of pain. Just be cautious with deep tissue massage. I am an LMT and can tell you from firsthand experience, that a deep tissue massage may not be the best thing for you right now. You may consider a lighter yet therapuetic sweedish style.

Deep massage can leave you feling very sore and sometimes overworked. If you and your chiropractor still feel strongly about that style of treatment, just be sure that your massage therapist understands your level of pain. Perhaps they will incorporate ice in the treatment or the use of a topical analgesic like biofreeze.
I hope you feel better and I wish you the best!
