Today was my first day of class. I am in a certificate program that trains students to work in the health/fitness industry. One of my classes today was a "career seminar" class, and we began by discussing what specific jobs we could apply our certificate to. We had a meet and greet during which we mingled and talked about our career goals. I said I was interested in opening a pole dance studio and vegan nutrition. My classmates responses were overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Several women told me they'd been wanting to try pole dancing.
Then, the professor had us sit back down and volunteer these suggestions, which he wrote on the board. One of my classmates raised her hand and said "Pole dance instructor!" and he refused to write it on the board. he said "Whoa, okay. I'm just gonna write alternative dance instructor."
I'm pretty outspoken, so I called out "Oh, enough with the taboo attitude!"
After class, I approached him and asked him why he wouldn't write it on the board. he said "I don't want anyone to be offended." I told him that it was a very athletic activity...over 3 dance studios in our city offered classes in pole dancing...that there are international pole dancing competitions...and that it was a passion of mine." he didn't respond. So I just said, "I just wanted to educate you a bit on the subject and hopefully you'll open your mind to it. Have a good one." Grrrrr...close minded people suck.
