    Default Generic or name brand?

When doing grocery shopping...what items MUST you get name brand, and what do you buy generic?

For me..Cereal must be name brand, as well as soda.

I actually prefer generic mac n cheese in the box.

I buy generic dish soap, but name brand laundry soap.
Cleaning supplies are always name brand for me.

Generic body wash works the same to me as name brand. I normally buy the Equate brand for Dove body wash.

i just went into this in my chips ahoy thread.

i am a generic food buyer. but some things i need the real thing: cheezits, triscuits, ketchup, drpepper, and ben and jerrys or blue bell ice cream. if you've never had blue bell, im so sorry...

body care, i'm a name brander for the most part. i feel like you get what you pay for with that. i tried the target & equate dove with exf. beads and they both sucked. i'm just sticking to dove soap bars from now on.

body sprays from walmart etc don't stay on me.

cleaning supplies are a MUST... windex lime is my favorite... cleans so well. $1 stuff doesn't seem to cut it for me.

bottom line is, you get what you pay for.

^ same with eyeshadow! maybelline SUCKS on me!

i really only use mac e/s, and one special color from lancome i love!!!

for me, clinique is all around goodness, skincare + makeup!

makeup brushes are another thing. $5 kabuki made tiny scratches all over my face. $25 sephora brush = no ouchies and better coverage!

i will only ever buy name brand tampons, soap, toilet paper, tissues, etc. basically anything for my body... i'm snobbish with that stuff.

i only buy name brand cleaning supples too. i'm loyal to BAM and pine-o-clean products!

hmm now that i look thru my cupboards, i don't really seem to buy anything generic. the only generic stuff i had was salt & pepper.

tampax pearl, ladies. the leak preventing braid is a godsend. target brand pearls cannot compare. spend the extra buck twenty five.

Oh, tampons. they must be name brand. The generic tampons feel like I'm shoving a football up my vag.

TP...I've discovered a few generic brands that work well, you just have to know what to look for, cause most generic TP is way way to thin and rough.

Toothpaste has to be name brand, and so does fake tan lotion.

Drugs: generic works, prescription or OTC.

I'm a fairly simple person. I like generics when available. But it depends for stuff like cosmetics. Ingredients are everything to me. Generic hair conditioners and the like are mostly filled with horrible drying agents (alcohols...). So I'm with name brands in that department. But if there was an equally comparable generic, I'd be all over it.

Food also depends. I eat a generally clean diet, so lots of frozen veggies, fruits, blah blah blah. But I'll also read labels for ingredients and nutritional value here too. If the generic is pretty shabby in the nutrient department, what's the point.

Now when it comes to technological items and devices (like computers), I pay more attention to brand. Some brands are just generally more reliable.

I buy a lot of generic stuff when I can, especially diapers. FUCK those things are expensive. I will never buy generic baby formula, tampons, shampoo, cream cheese, frozen pizza or potato chips though. There's probably more, but I think those things are usually sub-standard in their generic form. Also, I must have Ore-Ida tater tots.

I always use natural non-fluoride toothpaste, so that doesn't come in generic.

Name brand everything except work stuff like baby oil (and then I put that in a J&J bottle, hahahaha)... umm...

    Name brand shampoo....
    Name brand pastas...
    Generic bread...
    Name brand sweets...
    Generic sauces...

I usually eat brand. I just do. But I -rarely- go to the market because I'm so picky. I buy my shampoo at a salon. I have a butcher I go to specifically for my meats and a place I go specifically for my fruits. I rarely eat packaged foods... and I grow my own spices... so...yeah.

I can do generic on stuff like salt and frozen veggies. I can do generic on SOME cleaning stuff...but not laundry detergent or dishwasher stuff. Not worth it.

I'm all about generic tampons( the Pearls....they flake off and leave bits inside you. If you are prone to UTI's..not good. Take one out of the wrapper and pull it out of the aplicator..all that little stuff you see fly off? Yeah..that goes all inside you. They were almost recalled because of this.)

Most everything esle I buy name brand unless I'm REALLY broke

^ that sucks about tampax pearls, but i'm a heavy bleeder, only ones that really feel "good" during the heavy flow. i'm glad they weren't dc'ed.

and HEB whipped cream cheese is good... philly IS better though.

I buy most everything in name brand, though I buy alot of archer farm's stuff (Target's brand). I buy generic meds, but that's about it. Lots of generic stuff grosses me out, especially mac n cheese. *shudders*

This thread has me thinking really hard.
I think when i was poor i bought a lot more generic stuff. I still try and buy things on sale but generally I'm all name brand now. Generic mac and cheese i would NEVER buy no matter how poor i am. Generic drugs don't bother me at all. I do like target brand method cleaners and some of the archer farms stuff. I will buy generic frozen veggies and flour and sugar but i think that is it.

I used to be a total name brand whore. No matter what it was, it had to be name brand. Then I started going to Super Target and I got addicted to their store brand stuff, and my SO started getting me to try some generic stuff on occasion.

Now I'm about 50/50. Toilet paper, Dr. Pepper, Ben&Jerry's, cereal, laundry detergent, and tampons HAVE to be name brand. Other things go on a case by case basis. Sometimes I get all proud when I buy something generic and I like it because then I know I'll buy it again and save money. Yeah, I'm a total dork.

I am a strange girl for liking generic mac n cheese apparently.

I dunno....the way I make it, the generic brands just work better than Kraft.

I make mac n cheese out of the box different:

I sort of follow the directions on the box, but I add a little extra cheese, slightly more milk, less butter, and 1 tbsp of philly cream cheese. This makes for the cheesiest, creamiest mac n cheese ever. For whatever reason, this doesn't seem to work as well with Kraft as it does generic brand.

I buy a great deal of store-brand stuff. Trader Joe's especially. I don't go so far as some of the crazy generic stuff you see at bargain places like Shop n' Bag, where the canned corn is just a can with a white label and black lettering that says "Corn". That's a little scary. I've bought Acme brand of certain things, Target brand of others. I use the Target version of Listerine Citrus. It tastes and works exactly the same. I buy store-brand ibuprofen and things like that, too. Hmmm...I'm not terribly brand-loyal. If a comparable item is cheaper and tastes/works the same, I'll buy it. I also have 4 kids, though. My grocery bills are a bit on the crazy side.

okay now, usually target brand is bangin!

thetarget tampons didn't have a good enough grip on them, they were hard for me to use... and the target body wash itself was good, but the beads in it wouldn't dissolve!

I don't think that's true. You're paying for the marketing- not the product. Generally I will pick generic over name brand if I know its similar quality. The lime windex- that's a different product that is not available generic so you HAVE to buy the name brand.

I will admit though, I do have some brand loyalty. I love adidas.

I'm one of those weird people, I go to the grocery store every other day, if not once a day. Bread I buy name brand. Cereal I buy name brand and personal care items, name brand. Everything else, depends on if it's on sale or not.

Clothes, name brand couldn't be less important to me. When you're 6' and big boobs, if it fits and looks good, you buy it.

electronics, I go name brand. Experience has taught me that the name brand ones last longer and/or have a better warranty.

    drugs, gen usually.

kitchen supplies, I almost always buy store brand. They are so much cheaper, the same product (almost) and I go through them so much!

But TP, I am a name brand snob there.
