3rd big zit on my ass in a week. Yikes!

I'm afraid it may be staph and will continue unless I get antibiotics. My basic question: do I need to go to a dermatology specialist for this, or will a GP be able to look at my ass and tell me if its staff.

I would email my 2 doctor friends, but I really hate nagging them for medical advice. I am not sure if my insurance is going to cover a derm visit, but they will cover a visit to a regular doctor I believe.

If your insurance will cover a regular visit, start there. If your GP thinks you should see a derm, he/she will tell you.

In a meantime, try covering your butt in a generous film of antibacterial soap the next time you're in the shower. Let the soap sit for a few minutes before rinsing. My doctor advised doing that for my regular butt zits and ingrown hairs and it helps immensely.

It's also probably a good idea to clean your bathtub with bleach if you take baths. Disinfecting your shower walls couldn't hurt either. Launder all your scrubby things (loofah, plastic pouf, washcloth) in hot water, maybe add some bleach in there too. I think, though I am not certain, that there are types of bacteria other than staph which can cause zits, and the idea is to kill those germs. But I'm also Clorox's #1 Fan for no reason other than a stubborn sense of dogma, so my opinion is a bit biased.

This could just be a bad break-out, or it could be a bigger issue where your sweat glands are under-developed. My brother has the latter and was so embarassed that he waited until one of his "zits/boils" grew to baseball size before we finally talked him into going to the emergency room. Trust me, you don't want to have to take part in the healing process for that. They have to scrape all the blood, pus, and scarred tissue out. It's the most painful thing I've ever heard described to me in my life. And he could have avoided it all if he'd just gone to the doctor in the first place.

Believe me when I tell you that you want to get this checked out. Please don't put it off because it's embarassing or you don't want to spend the money. A few dollars spent at the doctor would be far more worth it compared to the hundreds of dollars you might owe by having to get emergency assistance.

IF it is staph, then in my experience a GP may not diagnose you correctly. I went to 3 GPs and got no results until I went to a derm and she fixed me up right.

Embarresed? Why ma'am whatever does that word mean? I'm not embarressed to show ANYONE my ass. I squeezed it and it started to drain tonight. I disinfected, etc. I will try and get to a derm next week. I have met my in-network deductible, just have to find a specialist. Health insurance rules.

Years ago I had one that I just couldn't pop and drain. I had no HI at the time, so I had a friend of mine lance it. More than 10 years later and I still have a scar!

A GP will be able to test the puss. A lo to fthem an't trained to tell the difference between staph and other types of skin conditions. I was told by my doc friends after a gp barely even looked at me to go to the er because they have to get regular training and retraining in all kinds of conditions, or go to a derm. Gp's in my experience this summer are not good with skin problems. Come to mention it, besides giving acne meds, they've never on the first visit got a skin condition right with me.
