    Default Ow dry socket

What can I do until I make it to the dentist? Its hurts it hurts!

I'm taking 2 500mg Tylenol tabs every 4-5 hours. Probably take some more before bed. I only have it on one side and I have a test tomorrow. I'm loading up on so much stuff it won't even be funny just as long as the throbbing stops and as long I can think straight for 2 hours to take my test. Also, have to work tomorrow night. This is turning me into a big baby.

    ohh...this hurts sooo bad.

    Were you prescribed pain pills?

One night I had a terrible terrible toothache and the dentis was closed. The emergency number advised me to do the following until I coudl be seen in the morning:

    Take 800 mg. ibuprofin

4 hours later take the vicoden as prescribed

4 hours later another 800 ibuprofin

    Keep alternating.....

    * ONLY ibuprofin, not tylonal!!!!

The vicoden alone didn't touch my pain, even after I took 2 pills at once, still nothing...but suprisingly, alternating like that did work, and toko enough pain away to get me through the night....otherwise, I probably would have just jumped off a bridge, I have never felt pain so severe in my life.

All I have is Tylenol. Ibuprofen sounds like a better choice. I ate all my pain pills the dentist gave me. Its not severe...yet. *whines* Someone cuddle me.

I do not think 1,000 mg of tylonal every 4-5 hours is good. To much tylonal can cause liver damage

I only take Ibuprofin, it seems to work better, and it doesn't have as serious side effects.

I have a high tolerance for Ibuprofen but I went and got some sleeping pills and that too. I can't get to a doc until Saturday. TM is dying. At least I should be asleep soon passed out on the one sleeping pill and 800mg of painkiller. Any more advice would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yea, do you think 1600mg-2400mg of Ibuprofen is bad to take?

Um, I have heard people can die from dry socket. I would get myself to an emergency room or urgent care place to get some treatment asap.

How do they die? I can't afford another visit to the ER.

I don't know - a good friend recently had her wisdom teeth out and was told how careful she'd have to be to avoid dry socket because people can die from it. I think because too much bacteria can get in that open hole and cause serious infection that is very difficult to treat? Dry socket is where the blood clot comes out and you're left with a gaping hole...

Don't take more than 800 mg of ibuprofen every 6-8 hours or you risk severe stomach upset and possible ulcers.

I did a search on dry socket and could not find any reference to death being a common complication. Technically, death is a complication of life and anything could cause death at any moment but I don't think dry socket should be the big killer you worry about.

Make sure the hole is well rinsed out with warm salt water. Trapped food particles will make things worse. I keep seeing oil of cloves mentioned as treatment for the pain. Not sure where you can find it, but it is probably worth trying. Most importantly, get back with your dentist. She needs to put a packing in the tooth site.

Oh yes, oil of cloves is supposed to help with dry socket, I remember my dentist packing my hole with gauze soaked in clove oil.

And although boxing doc said it, I'll say it to....800 mg. of ibuprofen is the limit, although she said every 6-8 hours....my dentist recommended that therapy I suggested earily because it was an emergency and nothign ele could be done. It was a short term pain solution to get me through until I could see a dentist in the AM. I wouldn't suggest staying on that therapy for to long because it is a lot of medication, but if there is nothing else that can be done and your in severe pain, it did work for me, and was the only thing that took my pain away. I just wouldn't do it for to long.

I wonder what caused he dry socket tho...that's a complication that shouldn't normally happen. Dry socket usually happens when you smoke, or drink through a straw, stuff your told not to do after getting wisdom teeth extracted.

Interestingly, people on oral contraceptives are more prone to dry socket, and if you have ever had dry socket before, you are more prone to getting it again. So, it seems like you can follow all the rules and for some reason still be prone to getting it.

When I joined the Marine Corps, they pulled all my wisdom teeth in boot camp, which resulted in dry sockets.

I caught pneumonia and sepsis from them and had to spend the remaining 10 weeks of boot camp battling with it.

I was coughing up parts of my insides all over Parris Island. I've never been as sick in my life.

I got dry socket...on the third day. I followed the rules to the "t" and still got it.

It IS painful...and what causes that pain is the air hitting the exposed nerves in your mouth.

Grab some gauze, soak it in clove oil and then very, very lightly pack it into the hole. You should go see your dentist ASAP, though. They use some other stuff and my oh my it works wonders. If you call and tell them that you think you're going to pass out from the pain of dry socket, they should let you walk right in. It takes on a couple of minutes to pack the hole. They usually won't even charge you for that, either...so if you're waiting until Saturday for money, don't.

You may want to call your prof and ask if you can have some extra time to take the test (or take it later in the day) since you've got dry socket and it's hurting and your on pain meds and getting it packed. No use in sitting for a test you cannot concentrate on and (drugged up for) and not passing it.

Not waiting until money but I'm working and have another day of school. By the time school is over nothing will be open. I guess the painkiller lasted through the night because I don't feel as much pain as I did last night. The test is today in a few hours and he's a stickler for warning him before hand but it is worth a try to tell him whats going on. Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm gonna try my hardest to get through until Saturday.

I got 4 dry sockets when I had mine out.

I reported it 4 days later and they saw me daily for a month to repack with the clove oil cloths.

I remember I ate a lot of sorbet and drank myself silly, though I don't recommend either of those as effective. :/

This has to be the suckiest outcome possible. How did you end up with pneumonia though? Aspiration or secondary to narcotic treatment for the dry sockets (inhibits respiratory drive)? How long did you stay in the ICU with the sepsis? (Sorry to be nosy. I'm the one who usually puts people in the ICU and I don't get the follow up that floor docs do. )

Please don't tell me this was some screwed up cost cutting exercise on the part of the USMC. I know y'all are hardcore, but Jeez....

Back to the OP, now I'm scared for TigersMilk. Girl!!!! Check back in with us after you go to the community hospital. You can apply for a reduction in the services rendered bills after your ER visit.

Aww thanks MM. I'm on so much Ibuprofen until Saturday I think I'll be ok. Feeling pretty loopy but its ok. I started to get pain during my test so I finished what I could and left. Just have to remember to stay on this stuff round the clock.

I'm alive! I went to the doc today and he said I had a little dry socket and there's no infection. As long as I don't chew with that side I think I'll be ok. Thanks for all the advice.
