    Default Starting a nonprofit

I'm well on my way to opening up a Bikram studio in the next 6 months. Hopefully sooner..Now, I need to know what steps I must take to start a non-profit in the states of California and Texas..
It's going to be centered around the yoga, the goal is starting one for youth and one for recovering addicts.
    Any tangible advice is appreciated.

After reading the link you provided, I have a lot to consider. A friend's dad had a non profit, he paid people's light bills, got them jobs and money for new clothes etc. I was thinking that having a non-profit would make people more apt to donate, since it could be potentially tax deductible and plus I could possibly get state and county funds..But, I remember his dad running into difficulty with his board of directors. I'd hate to have it snatched from under me over inner politics..I'm going to look for other ways to run/fund it. Maybe get donations directly from my clients or just pay out my own/business pocket.

I opened the non-profit corp up, but when I got to the government forms to fill out and all of the requirements for reporting, etc. I said nevermind and closed it down.

    But, I applaud the effort.

I did the paperwork to form a federal tax exempt charitable organization, 501c3 if I remember correctly. It was a hassle and stressful but not too bad and the IRS was actually helpful and quite willing to explain and answer my questions. Would have been a lot easier to pay a local attorney but our group didn't have the funds for that.

Just make sure you do plenty of research so you have a good idea of what you're getting yourself into.

Nolo publishes a lot of legal self-help books. You still might need a lawyer to help you set up your business, but investing in a few books for research is worthwhile. Their homepage is,

Just click on the "nonprofit" link under the "Business & Human Resources" section. You might also consider reading the LLC link, to see if you might want to discuss that business structure with a lawyer.
