Default MAC Smoking Eyes Quad - Look 1

MAC Smoking Eyes - Look 1

In this tutorial, we will be using MAC’s Smoking Eyes quad. You can use any shadows you want, but this quad is the best collection of neutral EVER, so I highly recommend getting it. These tutorials will be shorter in length, eyes only. If my instructions are not clear, please feel free to ask questions.

    1. Start with clean bare lids.

    2. Apply your eye shadow base of choice. I used Shimmersand shadestick, but you can use whatever works best for you.

    3. Get your Smoking Eyes quad and pick up some Next to Nothing (lightest shade) with a fluffy brush.

    4. Apply all over your lid, from lashline to browbone. This is called a “wash” and helps everything you put on top of it blend easier.

    5. Now get another fluffy brush (or clean yours off really well) and pick up some Satin Taupe (top right shadow on the quad. Apply in the crease and outer corners, leaving the inner lids bare.

    6. Now we are going to do the browbone. I am using Arena b/c I feel the lightest shade is too light for me. Use Next to Nothing (lightest) if you aren’t as dark as me. If you are tan, I suggest Arena.

Pick up whatever shadow you choose to use with a fluffy brush. Apply to browbone, blending downwards to get rid of any harsh lines we have from Satin Taupe.

    7. This is where we are now.

    8. Now pick up some Showstopper (the dark brown) with a precise crease brush.

    9. Apply in the outer v, blending into the crease. You can always use a bit more Satin Taupe on a fluffy brush to help it blend.

    10. This is what it should look like.

    11. Now pick up some more Showstopper with an angle brush and line underneath your eyes.

    12. Pick up some more Next to Nothing (lightest shade) and apply on the inner lid, blending into the darker colors.

    13. Eyes open.

    14. Do your brows, apply eyeliner (just skip the inner rims if it doesn’t work for you! I need the drama, lol), apply mascara (and eyelashes if you wish).

Hope you enjoyed!! More to come from this quad, I love it!!!

    ^^Haha, thanks!

Oh yeah, I used MUFE's Aqua Eyes liner on my eyes. I am LOVING this stuff. I love my Fluidline and all, but sometimes it's a pain in the ass and you just want a quick easy pencil. Enter MUFE's Aqua Eyes! Highly recommend.

*swoons* YAY!!!!! how i've missed your tutorials.... this is a beautiful, subtle, 'smoky' look... thank you so much for taking the time to post it!! I'm actually gonna pass it on to my mom.... i just brought her to MAC and she bought a few of the colors- this could help her a lot. (hehe she's already seen a few of your tut's; she was like, "that woman has some amazing make-up skills!!!) god bless open-minded parents.

The outer V.....I have major trouble with this. What is the best technique for that? Mine is never even and looks a mess.

Also..I have a huge problem getting my e/s even where the e/s color meets the browbone color. Like...I can't get it in a nice shape...I read that it shoudl go along yoru eyebrow shape, but I can't even attemp to get that, all i want is like, an even shape, and one that matches on both eyes...

Do you have any idea what I'm trying to describe? Post #3 is what I;m talking about. How to get the eyeshadow even on top.....

How do you do these 2 things the right way?

Would those colors look good on me? I'm always jealous of smokey eyes but I've never been able to make black and grey work. I've got very fair, freckled skin with blue and pink undertones, blue eyes, light hair and brows. I love dramatic eye makeup but I just can't find the right colors except for certain shades of brown, purple, and pink! I wanna wear deep dramatic smokey eyes too! *pout*

I always had problems with the outer v until I got a good brush. I used 239 from MAC. I like it b/c it's flat and stiff, so it doesn't apply shadow anywhere I don't want it too. I usually do one swipe out along my lash line and one swipe up into the crease from the end of the lash line. This helps set the shape and I blend from there. I also use a lighter color (satin taupe here) to blend away the lines of the darker color.

This is also a good precise crease/outer v brush I use occasionally:

I also use CVS's Essence of Beauty crease brushes, they are small and precise and work well on the outer v. And cheap!

Again I usually start at the outer corner of my eye and follow the shape. I take the color a bit higher than I really want it to be and blend down with whatever color I'm using on my browbone. I use fluffy brushes for both of these since I need it to blend well. Also, what's your lighting like? I notice if the light on one side is a bit darker it throws off my eye makeup. You can buy a great lighted makeup mirror at Ulta for $15. Using one of those gives me the same amount of light on each side and has really helped me to do my makeup better.

I think they would look great on you!! If you don't want it to be so dark, you can always skip using the darkest shade in the outer v.

I was also asked in a pm if this would work with red lips. If I were putting the focus on my lips, I would definitely probably skip darkening it up in the outer v just to make it look more natural and so it doesn't compete with my lips.

Nice! I have this kit! LR, i bought "stormwatch" eyeshadow from the bluestorm collection, I usually just use a base, the eyeshadow and then blend it with a white shimmery shadow up to my browbone, lots of black liner and thick black lashes. Do you have any other ideas for this look? Im getting kinda sick of it!
