    Default Help for Macbook?

I regret buying this overrated, battery-starved, crapbook. But anyway.

I have microsoft word as my only word processer (processor?), and the damn thing is gone. The icon has disappeared from my desktop, and when I use Finder to hunt the application down, it pops up for a second and then vanishes again. Like one of those gopher heads at the carnival. Wft? When I click on my documents to open them, the same thing happens. I've rebooted...and that didn't work. That's about I've got in my crapbook fixing repetoire.

    Any ideas what's going on?

ummm.... try going to "recent items" in the far top-left apple icon when you're in desktop mode. My Photobooth did the same thing... but I can always get it back under 'recent items' (applications) as long as I keep using it occasionally. Other than that, try a search using the blue "spotlight" in the far right top corner.

I'm not sure if you've tried this but you could go to Find (in File) and then type in Microsoft Word and all the programs will come up.

In the upper right hand corner, if you see a magnifying glass, click on it, then type in "Word" and it will search through your system to find anything with the Word "Word" in the title. Keep an eye on locations.

When you say it pops up and vanishes again, do you mean, it pops up in the dashboard and then disappears? That means it's not loading. I can help if you need to re-install it and don't have CDs

and when you say it disappeared from your desktop, do you mean the bar at the bottom of the screen with your other programs you use like ichat and safari? if so, that means you accidentally removed it by dragging it off of the little transparent bar. that's easy to fix. but Mast is excellent with macs. trust anythign he says, ABOUT MACS.

(mastypants i had to edit to add that bit lol i could jsut imagine you saying something like, "so i want you to peel a banana and cover it in hot glue and glitter...")

    Love it!

Mast, thanks, that's it. It pops up on the dashboard, and then goes away again like "psych!". I will pm you.

Did you keep it longer than the ninety day test drive without paying for the license?

And, Word is your ONLY word processor? Don't Macs come with Appleworks any more? That ought to keep you going until you get Word running again. Appleworks will open Word files, too, if you select that filetype from the File Format drop down window in the "Open" dialogue box.

I presume you are using Word because you have a need for a super high powered word processor, so I am not trying to talk you out of using it, just suggesting a temporary workaround.

So far as restoring the software if it was accidentally deleted, look in the CDs that came with the computer. There should be a set of four or five that are labeled "Software restore." If repairing the alias as Mast suggested does not work, you might need to reinstall the software. You can tell if you need to do this by opening the Applications folder, finding the MS Office folder, and double clicking directly on the application icon. If it works there, the problem is that your alias lost contact with the original application. This happens sometimes after you install some of Apple's software updates.

Another thing to try is to look for the System Install CDs that came with the computer. Put System Install Disk 1 in and boot from it. (Hold down the C key as you boot up, or go in the Preferences control panel, select Startup Disk, and click on the CD icon. The CD must be in the drive, of course.)

Then, once it starts, DO NOT run the install program. Instead, go to the File menu and select "Disk Utility." Watch out here--if you select the wrong option, you will initialize your hard drive.

Look for two buttons that say "Repair Permissions" and "Repair Disk." Do not worry about what these mean. If you really want to know, you can learn this later.

Click on "Repair Permissions" and let the program run. Do not worry about what the information the scrolls across the screen might mean. Now and again, it might ask you if you want to repair a list of files. Click yes. When it is done, you will be asked if you want to save a log of what was done. Save this somewhere on your hard drive where you can find it. It might help a tech repair your computer if it needs it.

Before repairing the disk, restart the computer from your hard drive. Quit Disk Utility. When you select restart, you will be asked which system folder you want to use to restart. Select your hard drive.

It is possible that just repairing permissions will solve your problem. If it didn't, go through the same steps as above, except this time click on "Repair Disk."

It is a good idea to repair permissions and repair the disk every time you install new software, and perhaps once a month of use, more often if you use the computer a lot. This repairs any data that may have been corrupted.

If that doesn't do the job, there are other things to try, but they will require you to purchase or borrow more powerful disk repair software.

Let us know what you did to get it working again. Who knows, maybe some day some of us might have the same problem.

If I was unclear, please ask me what I meant. Good luck!
