dont let the water run when you dont need it to, i.e. brushing your teeth. recycle ALL the time. if you are out, and have a soda (can or bottle), take it home with you to recycle. if your friends dont recycle, tell them to hold their cans/bottles/paper trash for you, and you'll take it off their hands.

reuse your shopping bags, and try to bring a canvas bag with you to go grocery shopping so you dont have to use either paper or plastic.

drive less and take the bus/pub trans more.

use towels and not paper towels.

ummm that's all i can think of now.

    Love it!

i've got a grey water system in my house where all the water from the shower comes out in a pipe which i use on my garden.

it was actually really simple and cheap to do as well.

    Switch out your lightbulbs
    Wash your clothes on cold

Go vegetarian or vegan--This makes a much bigger difference than all the little stuff put together.

yeah, public transportation is out of the question for me too, but I just got me a Prius. Now I absolutely don't feel bad about driving.

here's a cool link I found about Alicia Silverstone
    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,268542,00.html
    Take-Out Tips

Alicia loves to order in and make the most of her take-out order by saving what's in the bottom of the bag. She says "never toss those extra forks, napkins, chopsticks and straws and make sure to order your next dial-up-dinner without utensils."

    • Eat-In Organic

Eat organic whenever possible. Alicia has been a vegan for eight and a half years, but she knows that it's not for everyone. She does suggest eating plant-based foods which are not only healthy, but support local farmers and help save the planet.

    • Be Supermarket Savvy

Paper or Plastic? Neither! Bringing canvas bags for your weekly shop is not only eco-friendly, but eco-fashionable and much more durable.

    • Brighten Up

Alicia says to switch and save by buying energy efficient light bulbs. Compared to standard incandescent light bulbs, one compact fluorescent light bulb saves an average of $35 in energy costs over the life of the bulb. That means that if you change 30 light bulbs in your home, you can save over $1,000.

    • Be Practical with Paper

Sick of junk mail? Well, make the most of it. Alicia hasn't bought a piece of paper in over seven years! In lieu of Post-Its, she uses the backs of envelopes, old scripts and catalogs to jot down her reminders. And when it comes to junk mail, just scrap it! Call solicitors and tell them to take you off their list. Not only will you be less annoyed at the mailbox, but you'll save paper!

    Big Changes

Alicia thinks big when going green and has some great ideas on how you can make major changes to your life and the environment.

    • Be an Energy Star

Commit yourself to the cause and go green at home! All of Alicia's appliances are energy efficient and she suggests switching yours to Energy Star. Check out their website energystar.gov to get great advice on everything from your TV and telephone to your dishwasher and ceiling fan. For heating and cooling your home, try solar panels like Alicia! Bamboo is a great alternative to wood for flooring.

    • Drive Smart

Buy a Hybrid. Alicia owns a Toyota Prius and is quick to point out that this trendy choice is not only eco-friendly, but also economic. The car not only features an emissions-free electric motor, but gets better mileage than a standard car. Plus, the government is offering tax incentives for hybrid buyers. Go to prius.com

    • Eco-Chic Shopping

With all your eco-friendly efforts you should reward yourself! How about a new wardrobe? Alicia shops for undies and sweats in Barneys' green department and you can too at barneys.com. She suggests when shopping green, start with cotton and hemp and then go vintage. Her favorite piece is her hemp backpack. She never leaves home without it!

lots of great tips already listed but one I don't think was mentioned yet is to completely unplug small electric items not in use. Things like coffee pots, blenders ect. in the kitchen. Also laptops, computers and phone charges. Even when turned off electric items still pull a small charge from the wall.

here is a link that mentions some of the things we have all listed so far & a few that we didn't. Plus it explains a bit of how doing these things help the goal of being more green.

If you drive, accelerate slowly - acceleration takes a lot more petrol than driving at a steady speed.

Indoors, use low energy bulbs - those flourecent ones use a lot less energy than traditional bulbs. Switch the lights out when you're not in the room.

Don't leave things on stand by - uses a lot of energy. Turn them off instead.

The bulk of electricity goes in heating water - make sure your hot water tank is well lagged.

Turn your heating down by a degree or two and wear a jumper.

Buy vegetables/fruit/meats as-is, not pre-packaged into ready meals. Saves on packaging, energy costs etc. (Not to mention it's a damned sight healther).

That is illegal in most counties in the USA. That is sad. You can only reclaim rain water for yard irrigation. Grey water is considered "hazardous waste". Makes me wonder what is in our soap/shampoo to label grey water that way.

My tip- Grow some of your own food. Fresh herbs from a sunny window taste great and don't have to be packaged and shipped to your grocer.

Try shopping second hand before buying new. You'll save money and the earth all in one shopping trip!

    ^ Wow that's amazing.

In Australia we are actually encouraged to do because we have serious water restrictions this and the government reinburses us for the cost of setting it up.

We aren't allowed to water our gardens normally anymore and people are actually getting fines for wasting water.

If you really want to save the environment, don't have children. Each child brought into the world is another human being with a lifetime of consumption. Compared to that massive resource usage, all of the little things people do is just BS to make us feel better. To a lesser extent, you can help by also never asking for a raise, for the same reason.

Sorry for the brutal truth, but I started out as an environmental major, and that was the bottom line. If person A has a kid and lives their life doing everything possible to help the environment, they will never achieve what person B does by driving an SUV, recycling nothing, voting Republican, and never having kids.

Don't buy so much new stuff. Re-use as much as possible. Don't use the stove. Limit tv/ computer use. Turn off lights when you leave the room. Ideally get a zero-carbon car (I so wish I could afford one...this guy from near here built his own...it was in the paper- it's an electric car that charges the battery with solar energy). Use less paper products...I'm trying to give up toilet paper...or at least really reduce the use. There is so much new technology available for solar power too. When I was in Germany I was pretty amazed at how almost every house has a solar panel on the roof, or a roof garden...and they don't really use dryers anymore. They grow much of their own food. They're also really smug about it, but still.

I also have this dark feeling that none of it really matters all that much, and that humanity, alongside the countless other species that we're taking down with us, is still almost certainly doomed. Even when I was in grade school I used to get the impression that we were going to use every last drop of oil we could squeeze out from the earth, and that all this talk of solar energy/ electric cars had to do with our post-oil plan. But I hope I'm wrong. Not to get political or anything. Cuz I'm not that at all. And I guess I still care because I get so pissed at my roomate for not recycling/ using paper towels.

Before shopping have a good think about what youre going to buy and why. Think about where it comes from and if its not biodegradable question whether you really need it.
This doesnt just apply to material goods, it applies to anything you put on or in your body. Go for natural skin and hair care products as often as possible - try to get cruelty free products too.
Diet and health is important also because the medical industry isnt particularly enviromentally friendly. If you can prevent yourself from becomming sick or needing medical attention thats a good thing!

Oh yes and try to buy locally grown produce - so much energy is used transporting food / products accross the globe.

I've been doing this for years because the wiring in my mom's house was so screwed up, it was to prevent fires. No kidding. I suggest posting a sign about this though because my brattier room mates would get pissed off when they thought the toaster or coffeemaker was started, when it wasn't even plugged in!

Anyway, lots of good info here. I am more optimistic about the future of humans and ecology (getting people to comprehend conservation)....The biggest selling point of "Global Warming" has been the insane weather of the past few years....Lifelong Snow Belters keep saying their winters are not what they used to be. You can't argue with that.

    Default lestat,

Try telling that to the Mormon population. They feel it's their sacred duty to overpopulate the Earth ASAP...If you want to save the world, unconvert someone from the Mormon Church lol!

Just a sidenote: I think having one or two or ten children is a personal choice but people need to realize the consequences of it, and Mormon Inc. just wants more tithe paying members so they really put the pressure on for people to have kids...(www.exmormon.org)

the mormon church has fewer and fewer members each year (they wildly inflate their membership rolls and deny the high levels of defection they are facing), so saying they are contributing to 'overpopulation' is inaccurate.

what's with all the hating on the human race for daring to procreate? humans are animals too-- we belong on this planet just as much as any cute puppy.

the mormon family having 5 kids and growing their own food and wearing handmade clothes is simply not destroying the earth. and i don't even like mormons, what with the racisms and all, but i do get really tired of hearing that all humans should die, or at least 'those people' should die, with those people mysteriously never being anyone other than religious whites and brown people in foreign countries.

because the 'overpopulation' argument never confronts the fact that most 'white' ethnicities in much of western europe and america are not having replacement levels of kids, which means that if you're complaining that someone's having too many kids, you are implicitly referring to the not-white ethnicities who are having 3-4 kids per family. talking about the vanishingly small groups of religious white people having large families is a way to avoid confronting that simple fact-- if someone is having more than one cossetted child, that someone is not the nearly always white people complaining about overpopulation.

frankly, the conspicuous consumption all over america by people with 0 or 1 kids is doing worse for the planet than any handful of births in poorer countries or among poorer people.

Actually, the Mormon church has (on paper at least) a vast membership.

They have a theory that you can convert to Mormonism after your death, so they run a vast genological database, which they add to constantly. If you're on the database, you're deemed a Mormon!

Although to be fair, they do make their genological database available to anyone researching their family history.

the easiest thing IMHO to reduce suffering, unnecessary consumption and environmental problems is to consume a locally-grown plant based diet.

^^^ Just doing that will help the environment heal itself exponentially more than doing things around the house to reduce energy expenditure like getting lightbulbs, hanging clothes to dry, recycling, etc.

The planet can only feed so many people. If we were to all start eating locally grown plant-based foods and NOT eating food that is flown/driven thousands of miles to get to us, and NOT eating food that requires water and grain to make it....the world would be a much better place.
