    Default For the vegans

K, I have a question. I want to try to go vegetarian for a couple weeks, maybe two, to try to lose a few pounds and to help get the junk out of my system. I got a whole bunch of veggies (fresh) and those steamer bags so I can pop em in the microwave and nuke em.

Is there anything I need to watch out for? Has anyone done this? Will I really lose weight?

I really, really, really, really hate beans and I am deathly allergic to nuts. Since it's only for two weeks, will the lack of protein mess me up?

Halp! Vegetarianism.... I'm doon it wrong.

You can try whey protein, or fish for a source of protein

Also allergic to fish, shellfish, and seaweed, sorry for not adding that earlier.

Where can I get whey protein? Isn't that what goes into smoothies?

^ Yeah, that would be an awesome breakfast. Blend up some blueberries, strawberries, a bananna, a tsp. of honey, a scoop of whey protien, and a cup of yogurt in the blender. Good for protien, very filling..great way to start the day. Or even just mix some protien powder into a glass of milk and drink it.

Just go to GNC and buy some Whey protien powder.

Also eat a lot of soy protein, found in soymilk, Smart Dogs, veggie burgers, tofu, soy yogurt.

Oh, didn't even think about the soy stuff. Great idea.

Does the whey protein have directions for how much to use? I hate asking dumb questions to the people at GNC. They look at me weird enough due to the super turbo hair growth thread. LOL.

Going vegetarian does not mean you are going to lose any weight. You might lose a tad going vegan, but thats no guarantee either. Are you cutting out meat just to lose weight?

Are you interested in going vegan or vegetarian, because whey is not vegan (and neither is fish!)

But vegan/vegetarian doesn't mean lack of protein. You said you hate beans, but how about lentils? Some of the pastas and breads are protein fortified. I also get it from soymilk, fake meats and protein bars.

I'm vegan and I get tons of protein. Probably more than most meat eaters. I just choose wisely. And I didn't lose any weight, but I pretty much eat anything I want and don't gain.

^^You beat me to the punch. Whey is a byproduct of milk. I'm vegan also... I think people freak out too much over protein intake. Most people eat WAY too much protein, and assume that it's healthy.. and that vegans need the same intake. Nobody does (unless you're like, a bodybuilder).

^True about the protein. I'm vegetarian more than 4 years and have no problems getting enough protein or iron. Beans are good!

I was vegan for a while, but realised the only way I could ACTUALLY EAT anything was to go back to being a vegetarian. so I'm a lacto ovo vegetarian.

you know, it's not really a way to lose weight, if you ask me. it's more a socially conscious decision you need to make, because the effects only last if you do it for a long time (and I mean at least a year.) I quit eating meat after I got a furry pet and realizd that animals (all of 'em) feel, think, and create as we do.

you will find the following to happen for you if you cut flesh out of your diet (including fish, fuck what you heard!):
    - your skin will have a softer quality and less breakouts
    - facial hair and bodily hair grows much thinner and much slower (the hair on your head and your nails will continue at the rate it should)
    - your body will, honestly, be about the same, BUT you will be able to eat more, because the fats and greases found in flesh won't be present in your food.

again, I stress the importance of going vegetarian for social reasons and not for weight loss, because it's totally pointless. the minute you start eating meat everything gets flushed down the drain.

if you want to do something for just few days, I suggest the edgar cayce apple fast (only 3 days long, all the apples you want.) if you're interested, you should google it. it's a REALLY EASY fast.

same here, protein is totally easy to get if you're veg. I usually take a lot of protein drinks (um, bolthouse farms vanilla chai is the SHITTTTTTTTT)

everyone here who says not to cut out meat solely to lose weight is right...

ive been a vegan for about a year now and i feel fucking fantastic!

i did lose alot of weight though, but i was eating a lot of fast food and CRAP! i am at a nice weight now, and am not gaining or losing...i like that...

every once in a while i do "cheat" and eat some meat...but it usually makes me feel shitty...both physically and mentally...

im a little more strict than the usual vegan....i follow the macrobiotic diet....it has a lot of spirituality based concepts along with it...

    google it! its fantantic!

Keep in mind that veganism is not good for everyone, and that at different times your body will require different things. Try veganism for a while and see how you feel, if you sex drive disappears, how your moods are, and how your stomach feels. Be prepared for lots of gas, too
When I am very ill, going vegan is awesome for me. But when my health goes up, I find that I need animal products to get everything I need to feel really good.
(keep in mind that going entirely vegan will mean not wearing leather or eating honey! And that if you tell other vegans that you are vegan, they might get snooty if they see you with leather shoes.)

exactly!! thats why i usually say i follow macrobiotics instead of saying im vegan. if someone has never heard of macro, i just compare it to veganism, minus the politcal shit....

Hrm... K's out of town... maybe I shall go vegan for the next couple of weeks and see whether that helps me kill the final ten pounds... I already eat very little meat, but I do eat a ton of dairy, and maybe I should cut them both out for a bit. Today's a perfect day to start since I'm out of creamer and put soymilk in my coffee!

Cherry, tofu is your friend. That whey protein stuff tastes weird; you'd make better protein smoothies with silken tofu. With all the different kinds of tofu, you can eat tofu every day and never get sick of it (at least, I can). My favorite is to get the extra-firm tofu, drain it and wrap it up, put it in the freezer for a couple of days, and then thaw and drain it. For some reason after you freeze it, it gets this really yummy chewy texture that is so good in stir-fries and pasta dishes... kinda like chicken, but not as dry or stringy. If you want to try veganism, learn to cook tofu!

If someone is doing it for health reasons rather than "animal rights" why would it matter if they wear leather? Ditto the thing about honey. Not every vegetarian/vegan is an animal rights fanatic.

And I know you are into the same things as myself, sooo...

I used to be vegetarian. I'd love to be again, but I live with Boyfriend who does not want to go veg. Our food budget is small, so I can't afford to buy separate stuff all the time.

You might want to ease into soy if you've never had much of it before. I've developed some sort of soy issue after 15 years of eating it-lots of belching and digestive probs. For some reason I have better luck with straight tofu than soy products. Get something, try it, see what happens.

I think I am going to try the whey protien since I've had to cut out a lot of soy stuff.

Thanks for all the help you guys. It is so much to digest! *rimshot*

I *heart* the vegan erotica. ROFL.

No, I'm not going veggie solely to lose weight, but that would be a great plus. I want to be more aware of what's going into my body, and to cut out the junk. I'm only doing it short term.

Thanks again for all the help. I'm going to be so much better prepared now.

Ditto. also... there's a difference between not WEARING leather and not BUYING leather. I don't buy leather first hand retail because it creates a demand for more production of it, but.. if I find a nice pair of leather boots or a wallet, belt or bag at a second hand store, like say.. red light.. then yeah I'll buy them because a) vegan shoes are NOT as comfortable and do not last as long, and b) first hand vegan fake-leather products are expensive. Buying leather products from a thrift store is not karmically negative, because the money doesn't go to the leather tanneries, it goes to the thrift store and it's employees!

If you're allergic to nuts, and you don't want to go overboard on the soy protein- try getting hemp seed protein powder. It's a little more expensive, but it has amino acids and a TON of protein- plus it tastes delicious in smoothies.
