Default Overactive metabolism is back - no energy :(

A fast metabolism is a blessing and a curse!

I was 110 pounds (at 5'7) from the time I was 16 until 6 months ago (I'm 24), when I started taking 10mg of Lexapro (an anti-depressant, anti-anxiety med). In those months, I steadily gained weight to be 130. I wasn't unhappy with the weight gain - I actually think I look great! But the weight gain was only from the med, and I've recently stopped taking it because my mood issues were mostly situational (a bad relationship I've gotten out of). I've been weaning myself off it for the last month, halving my dose, then halving that half.

The problem now is, my metabolism is getting back to the hummingbird speed it used to be at, and I'm suffering. I no longer have the appetite I had when I was on the med. I'm losing this weight, and I feel HORRIBLE (bodywise, not mood). I have no energy, I can't make myself exercise, it's hard to get going, and I'm sleeping a lot. I'm steadily losing the weight - probably too fast - and I don't know what to expect.

My question is, what are healthy foods I can eat in small quantities that will give me a lot of energy? The easier to prepare, the better. I'm a slacker.I can't make myself eat a lot. It's amazing, on the Lexapro I could dust a footlong from Subway like I was a Conehead, now I can barely finish half of that, so I need to get as much nutritional value in as small a quantity as possible. I don't really want to lose all the weight I gained, but I probably will.

I'm confused. Usually when somone's metabolism is fast, their appetite is strong. You said you have a weak appetite and that you're losing weight? It sounds like a slow metabolism ... right????

no i have the same prob. and its not something you wish you had.
not eating ever sucks because you have no energy and you shake and are dizzy and can't stand up long enough to do a dance.
i don't wanna be this way, i'm just never hungry!

Not being hungry is not having a fast metabolism.

A fast metabolism is when you eat and eat and eat and dont gain weight because your body burns the energy fast.

Not being hungry - I dont know what that is...

I have a fast metabolism and am also often not hungry, so they CAN go hand in hand...whether or not it's a direct correlation...

...but anyways, iron. When I'm feeling the lack of energy thing, Iron and B12 usually help.

If you need to pack nutrition into a small amount, try juicing. Also soups. I tried those 'green' powder drinks for awhile...they taste too much like ass though.

There's also always Boost and Ensure drinks, though I'm skeptical as to how 'good for you' they really are...in fact, I'm sure they're not.

I think I have no appetite because I'm metabolizing out the lexapro. I think I'm not eating because my body is living on the weight I gained the past 6 months. I'm steadily losing it, but as Laurcon said, it's a shitty problem. I'm dizzy and weak.

Before I took it I could eat anything I wanted and not gain weight - the thing was that I didn't want to eat that much to begin with. I'd only eat when I was hungry, and I'd stop when I was full. After a month of being on the lexapro, my appetite was voracious. I'd eat when I was full, or snack when I wasn't hungry, hence the weight gain.

B12 and iron sound like a good idea, thanks SV.

Viola strings, I have this same issue which for me is caused by taking wellbutrin. I try to eat alot of protien (chicken/steak/hamburger) cooked on my foreman grill and healty stuff like fruits, full fat yogurt (I like Fage yogurt from Whole Foods), full fat milk, peanut butter (any kind of nuts), cereal (healty ones like Go lean crunch) cheese, and beans. Hope you feel better!

if you have a blender you can make fruit smoothies and add in a high calorie protien power. i just bought strawberry Spiru-tein (soy/spirulina protein)...doesn't taste like a milkshake or anything, but i think it will mix really well as a smoothie

Maybe get a blood test. When I found out my b12 levels were rock bottom, and they made me get a series of shots...holy macaroons. I felt like super woman.

But also, it sucks coming off those kinds of meds. It's bound to mess with you a bit. There's probably some adjustment period. If you fear you're losing weight too quickly, you can try to add some healthy, calorie dense additives to everything you eat. Personally, I have never had the problem of losing weight unwittingly, BUT I have owned several chronically skinny horses. It is kind of the same principle I think...they didn't have the interest in food that other animals did, so for every meal we fed them, we added high protein, high calorie stuff.

So maybe try things like olive oil, avacado, nut butters, cheese...or anything that is high in good fats. Adding calories with extra sugar is not ideal, since that will mess with energy levels, but adding good amounts of protein-rich additives does help. Also, and I know you said you're tired, but weights are good for building muscle (and thus adding good weight...I read about a group of men who have a horrible time putting on weight, and they forced themselves through lots of heavy lifting...it does stimulate growth). Good luck and feel better.

b12 alone will help with energy, but take a b-complex instead and you'll probably have more of an appetite. in fact, the symptoms of several b-vitamin deficiencies include fatigue. to avoid toxicity, get whatever b-complex has the least available amount. i take the vitamin shoppe's b-complex 50, and another pill for just biotin, since the 50 only has 17% of the daily value.

i actually haven't been taking it lately because i'm trying to lose weight. i miss the energy boost, though, so i guess i'll just have to work on my self control. b-complex is the shit.

^ the vitamin does not. the eating can, if you eat junk.

actually, to be fair, i was also taking it when i was hitting the gym more. both of those things make me ravenous. i was eating soooo much, i thought for sure i would gain, but i just couldn't help myself. i lost, like, 10 pounds in a week. it was crazy. i looked so fucking hot.

the problem was when i stopped exercising as much and started eating almost nothing but total junk. if i'm too lazy to exercise or prepare healthy food, i stop taking it now. i've learned my lesson.

Ensure Plus drinks are a good source of protein and vitamins. They are suppose to help you keep you weight on.

Those things are FULL of sugar though - like drinking milky syrup. I tried drinking them to gain weight and got a yeast infection. Not the healthiest choice.

I say just stock up on fruits and veggies, nuts (and other foods with protein). I usually have a fast metabolism too, but it's slowed down some after the pregnancy. I used to need to eat TWICE at work just to make it through. Eat smaller snacks throughout the day if you can too. That really helps.

I gained on Lexapro as well. I still have the Always OMFG Hungry part of my high metabolism... that never really left... but I'm not able to rid myself of the gained weight, just any weight I might stand to gain from now on.... if that makes sense.

I've been having a lot of luck with 2-3 Enviga drinks a day. My energy gets a nice boost, and I can feel my hunger working even harder than usual. So far so good.

In addition to the Iron and B12, oats are good for helping the weight stick to your ribs. I liked oatmeal with tamari.
