    S.O.S.: Thigh Length Hair

My hair is thigh length. It does take more time/effort than a shorter style, but I have become accustomed to it that it, so it doesn't bother me.

My issue is that sometimes it can look, well, just "long". A couple of years ago I had it styled generically in layers, but I would like something with a little more "umph".

When I do searches I cannot find hair styles in my length .

This is causing me to hesitate booking an appointment with a hairdresser, since I don't want to want to walk in there without a picture (Past experiences have proven them to be notoriously scissor happy and I want to keep my length.

I have read that there are specialty salons specializing in long hair, but their pics show Rennaisance-themed hairstyles. While they look beautiful, I am looking for something more modern:

    Suggestions?

I like the way a blunt cut at the the ends looks on uber-long hair.

My advice is to learn to use hair sticks or hair forks. There's lots of updos that look intricate but are really simple to do. My hair is uber long as well, so I know what you mean. Hair sticks and forks are your best friend ever.

A lot of times long hair looks kind of, well, "blah" because of the weight of it. The heavy long hair drags it down. The best way to make it look modern and sexy, instead of "just long" is to add volume.

Giant velcro rollers are a long haired girl's savior. When I had long hair (about waist length), I would put them in, and then do my makeup, lotion, get dressed. Once I was done that, I would pull them out, and instead of blah hair, I'd have very sexy, volume filled sex-kitten hair, with just a touch of curl at the ends. Plus, they require no heat, so your hair won't be damaged.

To give your hair more body and fullness, and encourage the modern look, I would go for long layers. Make sure you designate exactly where you want the shortest layer to be. Many stylists will take your request for "long layers" to mean you want your whole head cut up a foot, then layers put in, which would remove up to 2 feet of hair in some places.

For a more dramatic result, I'd ask for the shortest layer to be about breast-skimming length, a few inches down from your collarbone, and the rest of th elayers progressively shorter.

^^Good advice, I recommend you be VERY specific as to where you want your layers to begin and end.

Scarlett, I have to say I love your new avatar! Very hot.

I have almost that long of hair. I use hair sticks (wooden ones only, plastic slips out). I also have a ponytail clip w/teeth that interlock, unfortunatley it's only in plastic. There is a site, longhairlovers.com. I haven't been on lately, but there's lots of info/styles/products etc.

Thank you soooo much cherry_sin. The beaded stick towards the very end is beautiful.

BTW, Not for nothing, but why did she choose that song? I had to mute the thing, it was driving me nuts, LoL - No offense to anyone who likes it .

    Really? Bra length / waist / tailbone / classic / thigh / longer ?

Hair forks - Now those sound like they might work for me, especially being when I pin my hair up using only bobbi pins, I practically have a custom helmet on my dome and although that might be good for protection (LoL) , it weighs a ton, always pinches random strands of hair, loosens and creates "bumps," etc. (since you could relate).

The sticks are so beautiful and beautifully crafted, but so expensive for what I consider an embellished chopstick ; however, I am beginning to realize that they might be worth it, since my length limits certain styling options while allowing for others which require these.

Shhhh : I bought a pair of red lacquered chopsticks to try some type of bun with, but my hair slips out of the sticks even with bobbi pins (I know ) .

No prob. I am between waist and TB ( I have fairy tale ends). My hair used to be knee length, but got it caught in a fan.

Here's a few links for you:

And if you aren't already a part of it, I suggest you check out longhaircommunity.com. There is a wonderful forum there that has some great members.

As far as hairsticks being expensive, yeah, they are. But you can get them for 4.50 at claire's in the mall, if you want to go that route. Also try your local dollar store, as they sometimes have packs of plastic chopsticks. As long as you sand the seams off and maybe put on some nail polish over them, it shouldn't snag and break your hair.

Also, for cheap hair forks, if you go to Walmart and get the metal double ended knitting needles:

you can then bend them in the middle and you have a very practical hair fork that doesn't require sanding and costs about four dollars for four or six. They come in pretty colors too. Here's a link on those:

    Hope that helps!

kandie_kitten, I have never used these before . Would these make your hair frizzy?

Some lady at a "beauty salon" put some of these in my coif several years ago and I don't know what happened, maybe she didn't know what she was doing, but she was just yanking them out and my hair ended up looking pouffy and needing serious moisture treatments at the ends.

Could you explain to me the "How To" of velcro rollers ?

Excellent and extremely precise advice, Thanks kandie_kitten . Although there is nothing wrong with the hairstyle, I personally am not trying to walk into the salon with long hair and out of the salon with a bob.

Oh isht ! Were / are you okay? Shoot girl!

When I go to the farmer's market, my hair forever gets caught in the metal clips they have at the bagging station which hold the plastic bags:

    YEEEEEEEOUUUUCH !!!! - LoL.

Thank you for the links and the forum reference. Really cool, especially since besides on this forum, there is no one I can consult for advice on hairstyles that would reply to me with anything other than,

"Your hair is too long, you need to cut it," "It would be easier for you if you cut it" or some variation of that.

Thanks again cherry_sin. You have got a paddle brush & "My arms are too short" comrade in me; LoL.

Thank you so much. You have been such a great help cherry_sin.

I have been at my wits end with my hair but not due to its manageability, moreso the lack of proper styling instruments. To be honest, I didn't even notice that my hair had gotten so long.

The best hair instruments I have been able to find (which actually hold my hair) are these giant jaw clips. My brother accidentally broke one of them recently (with his paws). I was absolutely livid at him because it had already taken me forever to find clips that actually work for me.

It was then when it occurred to me that there has to be a better way other than these two, now down to one ( ) clips, since my last one now seems to be on borrowed time, LoL.

I have never had a blunt cut because everytime I have gone in, the stylists would get Edward Scissorhands on me and put in layers, and you know how long those take to grow out.

I am currently giving the blunt cut another go

    Thanks scarlett .

Well I understand that, but have you considered looking into Classical or ancient styles for inspiration at all? So much of the time 'modern' styles derive their inspiration from other time periods or cultures.

Like the Roman women in that movie Caligula, for instance.

Or these Egyptian women with their hair braided in the front only:

Though maybe it would take too long to get it like that. And maybe it's too close to the Renaissance look, really.

Here is a picture with a very cool hairstyle I saved that Paige posted a long time ago, that I thought would make a good drawing. Her hair isn't thigh-length, but you could pull this off even better than she is.

Thigh-length hair is The Bomb, I have worked with very few women who have had it--actually none I can recall offhand. It would be a pleasure to do so.

    Hello whirlerz.

How long is your hair? I can see it is quite so in your pic.

Good idea with the wooden hair clips. I have a hand crafted Native American-type wooden hair stick that weaves into a piece of leather that has been shaped into a butterfly. It really is beautiful, but it won't hold my ponytail (doesn't stretch) , so I could only use the stick.

When desperate, I have been known to grab a local pen or pencil and put my hair up that way - And then I am looking around madly for said pen / pencil only to discover it has been in my hair the whole day .

Pic request is appreciated and has been duly noted . I don't have any long shots, so I will have to have a few taken.

Djoser, although it might have seemed like the logical path to look into, I must admit that I have neglected this avenue of options-

You're good - You are reeeeal good .

C'était une superbe suggestion monsieur Djoser!

The Greco-Roman period style is structured, yet free-flowing. I feel it most matches my personal style.

I would play with the Egyptian plaiting, but it weakens the hair making it prone to breakage.

Très super. I would just have to figure out how to anchor the style so that the ponytails don't end up at the nape of my neck looking a hot mess, LoL.

Would you happen to know the model in the pic? If so, perhaps you might ask her, on my behalf? Those may be clip-on extensions, although I can't tell for sure.

My hair is practically thigh-length, just a couple of inches short of thigh-length (it grazes my asscrack, lol). I always get my hair cut into VERY long layers for body. I wash my hair right before I go to work and let it air dry while leaving the house and on the way to work.

I do all of my make up at work...so while my hair is still damp, I roll it all up in not-too-tight bun on the top of my head and secure it with a cloth scrunchie. I keep the bun in my hair the entire time I am getting ready, which takes at least 45 minutes. Right when it is about showtime, I undo the bun and I have this lllooooonnnnggg layered set of waves in my hair. I comb it with my fingers and then I'm ready to go! No damage from heat styling or anything. I love it!

    Hey sweetie.
My hair is now just below the butt.
I have cut just over a foot & 1/2 in the last 2 yrs. or so. At that time it was thight length. I plan to let it grow as much as possible, but keep it in good condition. I also collect pics of long hair.
I cut a couple inches every couple months or so, w/professional scissors. I always cut only after the quarter waxing moon, & when it's in a water sign, Cancer, Scorp. etc. I place hair in a pony @ nape of neck, put non-snagging mini ponytail bands down the length every few inches.
I like a new prod. for detangling, Coloresse from Sally's Beauty. It's a spray.
Also like natural avacado oil for ends.
I have 2 wooden sticks. One is tapered, and 'wavy' it's really great. Have had for yrs. I don't remember where I bought it. The other is one from those clasp things you mentioned, it doesn't go in my hair either, but I use the stick. I also have a wide tooth soft rubber comb (doesn't create as much static) & boar brushes.
Mostly it's been up in a cap, the sun really bleaches my highlights.

I don't know the model, but maybe Paige will, she's the one who originally posted it, I forget exactly where...

Here's a picture that might help you. It's from one of my favorite movies, Caligula. You might find more pictures of women's hairstyles by searching for images from it than otherwise. Some of the scenes from the movie are quite graphic, though. Some are disturbing--but what do you expect when the subject is Caligula?

The searching for ancient styles might be frustrating, though, I was trying to find cool pictures to help someone on here with a presentation about ancient dancers, and it was pretty tough.

Thanks for the compliments, too, lol...

I love it!
What do you think of this, Hot2Trot?

I have always prided myself on retaining a totally professional demeanor when I go into the dressing room (OK, other than all the drugs I did while bodypainting in that one club, lol).

But this all sounds positively intoxicating, especially the bold-print part. Not in a pervy way at all, but esthetically, erotically. There's something about a woman letting down her hair, it can be literally breath-taking to behold.

You two are killing me with this thread, lol...

I feel you Mily. When I am sitting down and my hair is loose, I end up sitting on it and when I am not fully dressed, it can get stuck in between my ; LoL .

I have to sweep it to one side when I pee, or else it will go down into the bowl *yuck*.

Having long hair forces one's spatial awareness to greatly increase, simply in order to avoid the hazards of getting caught on something.

I understand that layers increase volume, but since I have always had layers in my hair, I am trying something different by keeping it blunt and exploring other ways to style, such as the wonderfully curious suggestions made by Mr. Djoser .

Strange to think I am using a blunt cut to rebel against what has been a "norm" for me, since blunt cuts seem so "conservative"; LoL.

Bless you - My hair takes forever to dry; LoL.

WoW Mily, do you always let your hair air-dry? I am guilty of heat-styling , although my hair doesn't hate me for it - Well, not too much anyway. I use a low setting (2) and have a cool-shot button on my blow dryer.

WoW whirlerz - How long have you kept track of your hair growth? I never really realized how long my hair had gotten, so I wouldn't have details, as you do, to share.

That has become my goal as well. Do you have a limit in mind where you will say, "Okay, that's too long"?

My limit would be the lower thigh/back of the knee which I believe they classify as "classic length".

Thanks for the product tips girly. I am pretty faithful to mine, since I have spent so much mon$y looking for "good products" only to be let down and have a nearly full bottle of something that is jsut taking up space-

Long or short-haired, I am sure most girls could relate; LoL.

    Grrrr...

    Static = A girl's hair's worst enemy.

This might read as "bootlegged" , but here is a Tip:

Hair is very similar to fabric in its molecular composition.
To tame static, run a dryer sheet at your hair's ends and fly-aways.
This should keep it "in check" on especially humid days:

Yes, quite frustrating indeed, which is why I appreciate you taking the time to hook me up .

I spend the whole day putting it up, then letting it loose, then back up, then loose again, since hair this long is pretty heavy and believe it or not, it weighs on my neck and shoulders. For example, if I keep it up for too long, I might get a tension headache .

This is quite natural for me to do, since it is easier to get dressed with my hair up so that it doesn't get caught / stuck, especially when my outfit needs to be tied / hooked / zippered / buttoned / pretty much, dressing in general.

Except for the aforementioned hooks and buckles (*Ouch*), the undresssing part is much easier .
