Default My kitten doesn't meow! Question for the animals lovers

My little girl kitten doesn't meow, she just makes a weak squeeky/squeel sound. I'll be at the vet soon, but I am curious about this right now. Is this abnormal? Her brother and my big cat meow normally.

Oh, btw, this is very important. My boy kitten's balls and have dropped and they are HUGE! Big ole harbl on this one. Alas they will be gone soon.

If my girl kitten goes into heat before their scheduled surgery date, will her brother try to have sex with her? He's a horny little bitch sitting in my lap right now, getting some serious lovin

Cats all make differant sounds...have the vet check her, but that may just be her meopw!

And get her fixed too...if she goes into heat...YES he will do her and poss impregnate her. Animals arent picky who they hump!

plus a cat in heat is THE MOST annoying thing...she'll scream bloody murder for a week! And every tomcat around will be at your door...they can smell it for up to 3 miles!

We had a cat with a "broken meower" for awhile. He trills a bit more now, but when he was really little he did this funky kinda scritchy me--ah-ah...rrrr squeak thing. I wouldn't worry too much about it. And yeah like Cam said, he WILL try to bone her, sister or not.

Pervert animals! They are scheduled for October at the non-profit place. But I may shell out the extra bucks to get them fixed at the regular vet, don't want to take chances.

What age do kittehs tend to go into heat? Mine are between 5-6 months.

At that age...she could go into heat any minute. If you cant afford both...just get him fixed now(males are cheaper since its a more non-invasive surgery then females)

Ok, I emailed them to see what they have sooner. The last thing I need is a teenage mother and incest kittehs!

Oh my goodness, 5-6 months?? I'm shocked she hasn't gone into heat already. Kittens should be neutered by 8-10 weeks. And if she's in heat (or worse, pregnant) when they go to spay her, it's going to be a lot more expensive and a lot riskier.

As for her voice, that might just be her voice but she may also just still be learning. Kittens learn how to meow from other cats. Just like human babies have a learning curve and need to grow into their own voices, kittens have the same thing. I once adopted a kitten that was abandoned at birth and had never lived with another cat, and it took her a few months to learn how to speak (she learned from the other cat I adopted at the same time, and also from my ex and me talking to each other).

Yes..if she goes into heat..they will likely make you wait until shes out to spay her. Cats bleed more during surgery when they are in heat so it is more dangerous

ANd while I agree 100% about they should be spayed at 8-10 weeks....some cats go into heat as late as 10 months. Average is about 6 months though..some a bit earlier.

Hmmm. But the other cats meow. Is my kitteh a slow learner? She's so dainty and precious.

Oh, and I didn't fix my big cat until she was at least 6 months old and she never had gone into heat. My girl cat is a tiny little runt, I'll bet she's a late bloomer. Oh, and I'm not using this as an excuse to wait. I'm getting him fixed next week no matter what.

I own a brother and sister (both fixed). The female is a talkative little monster. Her brother can only make little peeps and squeaks. On balance, I wish his sister were more like him.

She might be a slow learner, or she might just have a little squeaky weak voice. Or since she's a tiny runt, she might be under-developed and too weak. The first time I heard my abandoned kitten's voice was the first time she really felt like putting forth the effort... she was a weak little runt too, and sometimes she'd open her mouth but no sound would come out. I figured maybe her voicebox was damaged or something. Then I took her to the vet, who got out the rectal thermometer, and that kitten's voice came through like Maria Callas. Once she got a bit older and stronger, her normal voice did too.

Punch her in the throat repeatedly. It will help. Not too hard - not with like a full closed fist. Just one or two knuckles.

Keep them separate if she goes into heat or you'll have little mutant kittens with webbed feet. Actually - six toed kittens are unbelievably cute. They have little mitten hands - it looks like they have thumbs!

But don't try it. That would be playing God.

You can't neuter the boys unless and until their testicles have descended and most Vets will tell you to spay the females AFTER their first heat. It's a hormonal thing. I think. Anyway, there's supposedly a sound biological/medical reason to wait until after one estrus cycle.

^^^ I have NEVER heard a vet say to wait until after the first heat. In fact, every vet I've ever heard from has said exactly the opposite.

NO NO NO. If you spay BEFORE the first heat you cut their chances of cancer dramatically. No vet worth their diploma would recommend waiting until after a heat cycle.

Some cats just don't meow. They make such a wide range of vocal sounds. They only meow at humans so maybe she thinks that you are a cat.

No biggie. When I was a tech we saw a LOT of people who still believed this. Or even worse..thought it was in the animals best interest to BREED her once before fixing her. AAAHHH.... We managed to edcate most of them..but a few steadfastly refused to believe anything else. Usually because their grandmother, and great-grandmother..blah blah always did it this way so it MUST be true.

I've had cats in my house ever since I was a little kid and we always brought the girls to the Vet right after their first heat to be spayed. Conventional Vet wisdom from DECADES ago used to be to let them have the one heat but you gals are CORRECT and today it is recommended to spay earlier.

Your cat might be deaf. Test her hearing...sneak up on and clap your hands loudly behind her head when she's unaware. That might be it.

I had a kitty that never did make much noise, but she had the cutest little quiet squeeky meow anyway--and sometimes she would just open her mouth and you could barely hear it, but you knew she was trying to talk anyway. I liked it. In fact it makes me miss her...

Getting back to your post, though--my first kitty was pregnant at 3-4 months age!! The vet thought at first she had a hernia from being hit by a car, but said he couldn't do anything since she was so young. Then the lumpy belly started to swell more and we thought she was going to die (even though she acted like a normal healthy kitten). We took her back and he was amazed. "She's pregnant!" he exclaimed. Even being a vet with many years experience, he was totally surprised. So were we, but there it was.

Some fiendish South Side Chicago tom raped the poor thing, apparently, well before the age of consent.

I have a deaf kitty but he still meows. In fact, his meow is the worst because he meows so very very LOUDLY. Poor Pickles can't hear how obnoxious he is.

Kat, your kitty might just be a quiet one. One of my other kitties is very quiet and shy. Her meow is very small, sometimes just her mouth moves and no sound comes out. She is perfectly healthy and about 13 years old now.

My vet would not spay my kittens until they weighed over 5lbs each, they didn't care about how old they were...but they were about 5 months old when they finally weighed enough to get spayed.
