Default RoseLeigh, Kandie_Kitten, and Corey's Weight Loss thread

So, I'm being a copycat and making a thread for myself and RoseLeigh!

Six months ago I was all thin and toned and happy. Then I met my boyfriend, started going out drinking, eating out, laying in bed all day...and I gained 20 pounds in 2 months, and I never even noticed until one day, none of my pants fit. I've made some half hearted attempts to get rid of it, but I would end up drinking margaritas, or getting McDonalds breakfast, and it would all be over.

But I was going through my closet, and I have so many cute clothes, including very expensive size 4 jeans, and I really don't want to have to buy new clothes. And I really am self-conscious at this size. So, my goal is to get back in those clothes!

I started this challenge at 150 lbs (gulp). After the first week, I was 147. Ideally speaking, I'd like to get to 125-130 range. Of course, I'm doing a lot of weights, so I know that I could weigh more, but still be much smaller.

I'm not looking to count calories, because I tend to get obsessive. But I want to cut out drinking (save for very special occasions...like once a month max, instead of three nights a week), cut out soda (completely, add more fruits as snacks, rather than junk, and watch my portion sizes. I also need to add a lot more water; I'm so used to drinking soda constantly that, now that I'm not, I forget to drink anything at all.

I'm going to do 5 days of cardio a week, for at least a half hour (for now, as I progress, I'll probably add more cardio, but I want to establish good habits first). I do competitive martial arts, so I have that at least twice a week. I have an elliptical in my home, so I love that as well. I also weight train three days a week, doing full body, and ab work as well. I stretch every day, however, I alternate between "light stretching" and "heavy".

So that's my plan! I've been pretty good lately, and the number on the scale keeps going down, so yay!

And RoseLeigh, I tried messaging you back, but it said you exceeded your PM storage level. But as you can see from the thread title, I'm glad Corey is joining!

    Cleaned out the PMs!

Okay, I'm pretty anti-scale, but I know the weight I lost in April/May has come back and I'm not in great shape either. I need to get re-flexible (splits!) and I want to get back on the pole without fear. I want more upper body strength. And I want to be less jiggly and paunchy feeling.

I'm also going to try and cut out my at-work sodas and drink 64 oz of water a day. Maybe even more! Less crap snacks, more fruits. My goal is at least 2 servings of veggie and 1 of fruit a day. Mostly just eating better and feeling less awful. I'm a vegitarian, but I tend to default to pasta and perogies when I'm lazy.

For exercise, I have one scheduled Pilates class a week. I need to do at least one other class and two dvds (I have 1/2 hour Pilates and bellydance. Going to try and find longer ones) at home a week. I also want to figure out what to DO at the gym other than take classes, but that's for later. I'm keeping it small, because I have a full course load and work 2-3 nights and I can't be running around all day. Suggestions for stuff I can do at home are welcome!

Kandie-I want to know about this light and heavy stretching!

I used to be freakishly flexible. For instance, I could go into a full split, pick up my front leg, and put it up on a stack of books. I got to that point by doing light and heavy stretching days, alternating 6 days a week. I would rest completely, with no cardio, no weights, no stretching, one full day.

For light days, I do the following, stretching until the point where it's mildy uncomfortable, holding each for 15 seconds. It only takes about 10 minutes, tops:

    Section One Stretches
I start standing, stretching down to the floor, then to the right, then to the left, holding each for about 15 seconds.

Sitting, I start with a butterfly stretch, trying to push my chest to my knees. Then I bring one leg in, the other straight, and stretch over each leg. While still sitting, I'll spread my legs into a straddle, stretching to the middle, then right and left. Light days I skip the second section, and modify the third. I go into a split, until the point of mild discomfort, then switch leading legs and repeat, and then do the same with a straddle. That's a light stretching day.

A heavy stretching day is much more rigorous, and takes about a half hour or so. There are three portions to each stretch. You go to the point where it's mildy uncomfortable, and hold for 30 seconds-1 minute (depending on how much discomfort you can stand). Then you stretch to your absolute maximum, and hold for 30sec-1minute. Then you go to the point of mild discomfort, and hold again.

On a heavy stretching day, I go through the stretches in Section One.

Section Two is back standing, and is a different kind of stretches. It is based on explosive motion, rather than slow stretches in section one. As I mentioned, I'm a karate girl, so these are derived from traditional stretches martial artists use.

The first kick is a front stretch kick. Stand with your left leg forward, your right leg about a foot behind. You will kick with your right leg. To get the best stretching benefits, keep your right leg locked through the whole kick; in normal kicks, you want to bend the leg, then extend, but for stretching, it needs to be locked. Swing it straight forward and up, as high as you can. Repeat 5-10 times (depending on your leg strength), then switch kicking legs. Next is an in to out stretch kick. Again, the leg is locked. If you're kicking with your right leg, you want to picture drawing a circle with your leg, starting fromt he left to the right. Repeat, and switch. The next you reverse the motion, and kick out to in.

Section three (optional) is tough, but really helps. It requires the use of a partner who you trust.

Stand up against a wall; your heels and back should be touching the wall, your hands at your side. Pick up your leg, and have your partner hold it by the heel, an dhave them slowly lift the leg straight up, as far as you can. It's important to keep both legs as straight as possible, and make sure your base foot stays flat on the floor. After 30 sec-1 minute, push down as hard as you can with the leg being stretched, for 30 seconds. When that time is up, have your partner raise your leg a bit more, and hold for 30 seconds. Put down the leg very slowly, and Switch legs.

Next put your chest against the wall, palms against it as well. Slowly swing back your leg for your partner to hold (think of how a mule kicks, you want it to be straight back) and have them raise your leg. The higher your leg goes, the more your hips will rotate, which is fine. After 30 seconds, put one hand in your partner's hand, an dhave them slowly lean back, pulling you slightly with them. Hold, and switch legs.

    Section Four

Finally! You go into an actual split at last, to the point where its mildly uncomfortable, hold, then go further to your maximum, hold, then go back to mildly uncomfortable. Switch legs, and repeat. Also do this with the motion of a straddle.

Seriously, this is tough, but it kicks your ass into splits. I went from being a foot off the ground, to a full split, in only about 2 or 3 weeks.

    Hey Kandie and RoseLeigh-

Corey here. I have posted before that I'm not that concerned about losing weight, (I'm pretty small, size 0 o 1 and fit well in little girls tee shirts, LOL). My eating habits are good; fruits and veggies everyday and I bring light mozzerella string cheese, almonds, edamame and other assorted healthy snacks to work. I do tend to have maybe two beers when I work a shift, but I never touch bread so I think it balances out. I may try to cut out the two Coronas. We'll see.

My goal is to increase my flexabilty (thanks for those stretches, Kandie) my waist is now anywhere between 23 1/2 to 25in., depending on the time of the month, it would be nice to get to flucuating between 22 1/2 to 24in. I would like to build an inch on my booty, which would bring it to 34 1/2 in.

I was a bit lazy today and did speed walking for maybe 20 mins.

I have pushing to work out six days a week and usually make it five. I do cardio anywhere from a 1/2 hr. to an 1 1/2 hrs. and I lift 3 to 4 times a week. On the days I don't use weights I try mixed it up w/ pilates and balance ball stuff.

I will def try to incorporate some of Kandie's stretching routine.

    Thanks for letting me join.

I'm so going to start on those stretches! So far this week, I've done one Pilates class (we used a foam roller) and one 1/2 hour Pilates video (Ana Caban's basic mat workout). Got nothing healthy done at the beginning of the week due to boy-related stuff. I work tonight, so I'm going to do the light stretching after class.

Food wise: I've had some fruit and veg and bought salad, healthy dressing, a healthy pot pie (annies), wheat germ and flax seeds. Getting there. I'm going to buy some almonds and string cheese for work, too. Good ideas.

After a week and a half of being virtually perfect, I was bad bad BAD today!

I had a huge job interview today, and traffic was a bitch, so I didn't get time to eat a nice planned lunch...so I stopped at Burger King (BAD!), got a Whopper Jr, onion rings, and a small regular coke (my first soda in a week and a half!). Half way through, I realized I was killing a whole week's worth of eating well and exercising, and I threw the rest away. I was plenty full by then anyway.

It's amazing though. After a week and a half of eating healthily and exercising, putting that BK crap in my body made me feel, physically, terrible. It's like 9 hours later, and I still feel like hell from it. Bloated and uncomfortable and just overall blah. And a regular soda tasted weird to me. I guess I got used to less sugar.

I'm chugging water to help flush it out and help me feel better sooner. Tomorrow I'll just have to be more diligent about eating well. I took a long walk soon after for 40 minutes, and once I get done my chores tonight, I'll go on my ellitpical for a half hour, so that should help me feel better too.

I'm getting ready to go to work right now.

Earlier today: I did cardio for 1 1/2 hrs. using the treadmill at the highest incline, the eliptical and then stair master. I did my old stretches and some pilates for another twenty minutes.

Food (so far): morning: espresso w/ splenda and light soy milk, danon imunue booster yogurt w/ almonds and dried cranberries and blueberries.

before work out: light mozzerella sting cheese

    after work out: balance bar

lunch: a bowl of roasted corn w/ peppers and a sprinkle of feta and 3 oz. of salmon and chai tea w/ soy

3 hours later: a garden burger, sprinkle of feta and salsa. So far, 5 pints of water.

    Will report tomorrow morning.

Corey-you're inspiring! I, though am far less though. Today was my totally sucking day. I did get in 1/2 hour of Pilates video and the light stretching routine, but I also ate a ton of ice cream. And very little on the veggie front. At least it was Ben & Jerry's (more natural if totally sugar and fat), but yeah, too much. I love ice cream, but no more half a tub for me!

On the plus side, I worked last night at a new club and didn't have any soda! Mostly because they don't have a soda machine. Today I only had tea (most of which was herbal and so counts as water intake) and juice. And I bought club soda to cut the juice with. Yay.

We're getting there ladies! Ready for monday?

As I posted int he main thread, I won't be able to post tomorrow, so I'll post my update tonight.

Cardio wise, I did really well this week. I did cardio 5 days this week, for a total of 6 hours of cardio. I did my schedule dweight training, ab work, and stretches. I also have really improved in drinking more water.

I had a few diet slips. I had my fast food incident (lol), then last night, to celebrate a friend's engagement, we went out to eat and get a few drinks. I was better than usual though, and had just one drink, instead of my usual half dozen or so. Everyone got a dessert, but I split mine and only had a few bites.

So, I still managed to lose weight (another pound), but still plenty of room for improvement. I'm setting a mini-goal of getting under 140 by October 27 (I have a huge Halloween party that night), and an overall goal of getting under 130 by the end of December.

You guys I am so-o-o-o tired! I worked three shifts in a row this weekend.

On Friday, I worked in a club that is mainly stage only (topless) I think I did almost twenty two song sets!! I am a pole dancer and it was packed so I through my energy on stage! We close @ 2AM so in the last three hours it was just three dancers with no break!! I think that amounts to over two hours of cardio on top of what I did earlier on that day. I did have my two Coronas that nite, another mozzerella light cheese stick and some almonds and another 3 pts. of water.

Saturday, I could not walk!! I was so sore. I managed to get some stretching in before work. I had my usual chai w/ soy, danon yogure w/ almonds. blue berries and dried cranberries and then the roasted corn with 3oz. of salmon, again. Before i took off for work, I had a mozzerella cheese stick, a handful of edamame and by then about 3 pts. of water. This club is more of a lap club. I was bad. I only got on stage twice (I work with at around 30 other girls). I had a regular who buys my time (no VIP) here. I drank more than I usually do last night. I had a vodka/cranberry, 2 Smirnoff ices and a vodka lemon drop martini. I know, bad Corey. I did drink 2 more pts of water, had a handful of almonds and when I got home, I had chili beans.

Today was a bit better, but I was still sore and tired. I managed 20 minutes of speed walking doing errands (spectacular day) and had enough time to do three sets of squats (15 reps.) and worked calves. I had espresso this morning w/ soy and splenda, cottage cheese w/ almonds, blueberries, and dried cranberries. By this time, I had about 3 pts. of water.

While I was driving to work, I had a balance bar and 1/2 pt. of water. While at work, I had a mozzerella cheese stick, a handful of almonds, 1 and 1/2 coronas and (damn) a piece of pepperoni pizza. (I worked at the stage club again, so at least I was dancing a lot. Thank goodness it wasn't 20 stage sets in 5 hrs. again!). I also had another pt. of water.

When I got home, my man had bar-b-qued and lean steak, I had about 2 oz. and a couple of bites of his potato and some more almonds.

I'm getting back into my routine tomorrow. I am a bit bloated from PMS, so I know my waist isn't smaller. But I will get back to achiving my goals.

As far as energy goes, I really notice it when I'm on stage. Sometimes I feel like I can fly! Its a great feeling.

I also saw a dancer last night who has the body I want. I don't know if she has had butt implants, but she is around my height and we have a simliar waist measure ment. But her butt is really full and round! It's obvious she really works on her body. Good for her! (I almost asked her if I could take a pic of her lower body, but I didn't want to scare her, LOL)

She was just extra motivation. (Sorry so long).

Kandie- I just wanted to say that eating BK is not a bad thing once in a while. That is such good will power to trash your burger and rings. Good for you

RoseLeigh-I'm so tired I can't remember what I read, but did you say you had a bunch of icecream? So what? Just don't have anymore for the next week. It's OK. Actually, I'm thinking about having a small bowl right now. It's been a good three weeks since I have had any. I derserve a little

Oh I know once in a while it' s not terrible. And as for Rose Eligh, help yourself to that ice cream once in a while too.

I always found that if I allowed myself a few treats here and there, I was more likely to stick with a diet than if I swore it off all snacks all together.

It also helps if you let yourself have some really good ice cream. When I ate the low fat, diet ice cream, it didn't taste as good or rich, so I'd eat half a tub. Whereas really good Ben and Jerry's or something, I'd be satisifed after just a few spoonfuls.

But it sounds like we're all making progress! And good ideas with the snacks Corey, I'm going to start bringing nuts and cheese sticks with me.

This is true. A little bit of Ben & Jerry's is okay. I really ate a lot though-I've been a little depressed and weird and you know how you never notice how much you're shoveling in?

I started at a new club which is less stage oriented-three dancing areas, one pole, I think I went up 3 times all night. So it'll be all hamstrings and quads from now on. It's rather hard to dance without a pole now! I only worked one shift this weekend-too much homework and a little burnout.

I did my Pilates video twice and one Pilates class. I only did the light stretching once. My joints and all are cracking constantly after just that! Felt good though.

I did really well on the water, not as well on the fruit and veg. I managed to sneak some in though. I found my metal water bottle, so I can bring water everywhere, or at least juice or iced tea.

So-not a fantabulous week, but I feel a little more bendy and hydrated. And definitely more centered and in my body which is helpful no matter what the body looks like! I need to go get certified to take cardio classes apparently (they check your bp, weight etc), so I'm going to try and do that tonight if they can fit me in.

    Reposting my slightly altered goals:
2 50 min classes per week
2 1/2 hour videos (Beginner's pilates mat workout or Suhalia belly dance-moving up to higher levels in November if I can)
    64-100 oz of water/non caf tea/juice a day
    2 veg/1 fruit a day (I know I need more, but it's a start)
    Kandie_kitten's stretches 6x a week

    Rewards:
Each week I make my goal-I put $25 aside and at the end of the month, I'll buy one of the antique books I covet, but would never spend $100 on.

I started my day with a 17 block speed walk to my Doc appt. I did it in 15 mins. And of course, I walked back.

    I will report more later.

    Roseleigh-

That's awesome that you challanged yourself w/ a great class!! Yay!

Well, you guys pretty much know what I eat for breakfast and snacks. I did have that small bowl of B&J's Half Baked ice cream last night.

My man cooked me another lean steak earlier today and steamed some brocoli that I had w/ a sprinkle of feta and 2 table spoons of hoisen sauce.

Along w/ my 14 block speedwalk in 15 mins. and back, I did 20 mins. on the stair mill and worked lower body and abs and obliques and stretched afterward.

My goals have been altered, I'm afraid. When I saw the gyno today, I already knew I had fibroid tumors on and around my uterus. My periods have been a bit longer and more painful, so I figured they had grown. I've had them since I was 23 (that i know of. Im 36 now). They are not cancerous, but they add bulk. So, I don't think I will achieve that 22 1/2 in waist I was aiming for

However, I just want to keep improving my flexability and work really hard for a bigger, curvier booty.

The good news is: after all that drinking and not doing intensive work-outs for 2 days, when my Doc weighed me, I didn't gain a pound

So, I'll see if I can build me a butt by the end of the month

Ok, today I did cardio for an hr. 1/2 hr. on the eleptical and 1/2 on the stair master. I really challanged myself on the stairmaster and went up to level 13. I stretched after and did five miitary push ups (where you bounce back up to standing position after each push up) and 50 'girly-push ups' I also did 3 reps of 15 of one legged sitting squats.

My only cheat today was half and handful of blue tortilla chip crumbs.

Corey, if you log in and go to your posts, go under "edit". From that screen, there should be a delete button under the text box, so you can do it yourself, but no biggie.

Anyway, today was good cardio wise. I had my karate class, which I followed with a 40 minute walk. I have to stretch and do my weights, but I always wait until Sex and The City is on It somehow makes the effort go flying by.

I was good food wise too. I' ate more fruits and veggies, and had smaller portions, so yay!

Today was the first day where I really FELT thinner, and noticed a real difference in how my clothes fit. My boyfriend this past weekend commented on the fit of my jeans, and how they're starting to get baggy. I'm at the awkward phase where size 8 jeans are a lil too big, but the 6's are a little too small. I guess it's a good problem to have, right?

Today, I haven't done much cardio (walked 6 blocks to my Doc's. A different one. I'm getting all the main check-ups out of the way this month).

But I worked biceps, triceps and shoulders w/ free weights (I did a little back and chest ,but will concentrate more tomorrow). I also worked abs and obliques using free weights and/or pilates. Oh yeah, I did stair step w/ weights.

(I'm trying to do something for my booty everyday, even if it's not my day to work lower body).

I feel huge and puffy today and all I want to do is eat candy corn. Argh. Still, I did my Pilates class and worked, so yay exercise! My only other snack during the day was Fig Newmans (fairly healthy version of Fig Newtons) and almonds. I even avoided the frappacino at the starbucks walking back from the gym (maybe 8 blocks?). Not perfect, but closer.

I am not, however, going to do that same class next week. I found a different, more balanced one (cardio and working top and bottom)that I'm going to try. Too much pain and my knees are feeling it today. Lunges are all good, but I think I need to take it easy on the knees. Apparently my back flexibility has improved and my stomach is getting there-so says my Pilates chick/housemate. Yay.

I was a bad bad girl. Last night my boyfriend and I went out to celebrate my new job, and I started out great- water and a mini dessert (it's just one scoop of ice cream). Then he ordered a long island ice tea. So I did too. Then he did a shot...so I did too. Then he got another drink...so I got a martini.

    Bad Kat!

So I'm going to add 10 minutes of cardio a day for the next week or so. I need to work on this willpower thing.

I also signed up for a cardio class that's immediately after my karate class.

But you got a new job! So yay! We can't eat perfectly everyday-that's no fun. Good luck with the cardio class, but don't wear yourself out! We're almost done with week one, ladies.

BTW KK, those stretches are really good. I'm doing the light ones, every day I remember and they are helping with my tenseness levels. I think my legs look a little better too. And they aren't as ouchy today.
