    Default Damn! Robert Jordan died

Robert Jordan, one of my favorite SF and fantasy authors, died on September 16. He'd written eleven of the twelve books in the Wheel of Time series and was working on the twelfth. Now somebody else will have to finish his work, or perhaps it will be left unfinished.

He was only 59 years old.

    RIP, great author.

    I didn't realize he'd died... I can't belive it...

Btw, the series can't go unfinished! Don't even say such things!

That sucks! I only read books 1 - 9 of the series.. I planned on reading 10 - 12 all in one go when the last one came out.. This sucks.. Maybe he has notes/outlines they can publish so we at least know how it ends..?!

He left an unfinished manuscript as well as extensive notes and audiotapes for the parts that remain unfinished. He also told his wife and cousin the end. There is no telling exactly how far along he was when he died.

The decision to go ahead with book 12 is left with Tom Dougherty (from TOR books) and Jordan's (Or, rather, Mr. Rigney's) wife, Harriet. I can't see them leaving it as is, though we may have to wait a while for the last book while they rind the right author to finish it.

I read that he told his family everything that he was planning on writing in the last book, but the book (supposedly to be 1500 plus pages) is pretty extensive for a deathbed dictation.

So many times, I have sworn never to start another series until it is completed.

Isaac Asimov died without finishing the Foundation series. The authors who finished it had WAY different agendas than Asimov.

Roger Zelazny died without finishing the Amber novels.

I am still waiting for Orson Scott Card to finish the Alvin Maker novels. Since he is still alive, there is still hope.

Stephen King finished the Dark Tower series, but look at the stylistic changes that happened after he was nearly killed in that car accident.

But I think the real tragedy of Robert Jordan's death is that we lost such a great talent so young. We should have had another forty years' worth of novels from him.
