Angry Covering a Sneeze (Cover your mouth dammit!)

OK, I need help convincing R to cover his damn mouth when he sneezes. I've tried pointing out that if we're both sick we'll never get better because he never covers his mouth and I can see all the spit comes out when he sneezes. It's also very gross. He says he doesn't understand what the big deal is because some doctor told him it was pointless to cover your sneeze or some stupid shit like that. He also whines about

"how could I ask him to cover his sneeze because he does it several times a day and what do I expect him to do? Sneeze on his hands? And then he has to wash them several times a day as a result?"

Um, eww, yes! He's getting a bit better by sneezing into tissues if he has them, but if he doesn't or it's not close enough he'll just sneeze into the air like I have a problem with. Gross! And THAT happens very often because when he's about to sneeze he starts doing this "helpless dance" where he apparently can't run to the tissue box and demands I get him one. But by that time it's too late and he open mo0uth sneezes and then says "Oh well, you weren't fast enough".

Somebody please help me get through to him.

I have trouble getting my daughter to do this as well. Kids just have to learn gradually, and you have to remind them time and again before they'll learn.

^^^ I do that too. When I was waitressing I couldn't always stop to wash my hands every five minutes so I didn't want to sneeze on them, but I didn't want to sneeze on the food either. I got into the habit of sneezing into my armpit and I still do that.

Actually, public health types recommend that you sneeze or cough into the crook of your elbow if you don't have a tissue handy. That way, you aren't spreading germs directly in the air and you aren't contaminating your hands.

To the OP, sounds like R is making excuses to act like a big baby. I'm a doctor and I've never heard anything so ridiculous.

Do you think you get him to sneeze into the crook of his elbow?

ETA: Hadn't seen the other responses yet.

yes, sneezing into the crook of your arm is the acceptable (and preferred) way to cover your mouth and is now the method they teach kids in grade school. If he still refuses then hand him a surgical mask and tell him to wear that instead.

He probably is not imagining the microscopic microbial world that surrounds him. As a result, chances are that he probably thinks that his desire to not want to get up is not that "big of a deal" (guy language ) when it comes to germs.

    You could tell him,

"Baby, you are not taking me into consideration by not making the extra effort to keep your germs contained to yourself. I do so for your sake, out of love and consideration for you and I feel that you are not taking me into the same consideration . I would appreciate it so much if you would think of me and do the same for me, as I do for you, my love *batting eyelashes*.

Also, as a side note, there is NO AMOUNT of Purell that can replace the simple action of mechanical friction, that is at least 30 seconds of vigorous hand scrubbing with soap.

    I don't do Purell - No wonder super strains are on the rise and becoming even more virulent. People are neglecting and collectively forgetting the basics of hygiene in exchange for convenience;

"In exchange for convenience" - Seems to be a common theme.

I would soooo love to know how he would react to this approach; LoL.

I sneeze into my elbow too. I will suggest this.

I've also tried to be more diligent in my actions as well to encourage him, but sometimes I don't think he pays any attention.
