Default Injecting burlesque into your regular stripper job?

For those of us who work as regular strippers (not features or showgirls), how many let burlesque influence in? How does it go over onstage and with customers one on one?

For example, how do you think using small (around 18 inch in height) Sally Rand style fans onstage and during dances would go over? Long satin gloves and fishnets in birght colors? More themed routines? Costumes year round? I really want to start being more expressive and artistic, but don't want to look crazy in the generic and bland club atmosphere where neon spandex and slutty athleticism without grace is becoming the norm.

I would LOVE to see more of that! I think it depends strongly on both the club and the area. Alas, in my clubs, I always felt a little out of place even wearing costumes (not even anything outlandish), as most girls preferred to stick with sorta generic lingerie, bikinis & minidresses.

When I first started dancing I remember seeing a girl onstage with big red fans. I thought it was so cool how she did a little show. I wanted to try this idea, but I just didn't feel it would be worth the effort when people didn't tip too much on stage anyway. I did ballet moves on side stage once and that seemed to get peoples attention.

I'm all about costumes all year. Every day is Halloween.
The other night I wore an Indian costume, and a lot of other girls/some guys were like "Um, Halloween is next month", but I made the most money I ever have.

*sigh* even as late as the late 80's early 90's people loved an "act/show" on stage.
while i would love to see it come back. i dont think today's audience would appreciate the effort. they may just be bewildered as to why someone just isn't getting nekkid.
i've done old school burlesque as well as themed stage shows. (outfit, music)
i loved the art. sadly except for the one off events like susan wayward does it most likely would be a wasted effort

edit... the fans would probably still be way cool. for the older audience

I would love to see more of this too. I can not wait for Halloween. I wanted to incorporate some of my more wild funky burlesque routines,,,,and hell, not all of them are the most graceful....but even the fact that it is creative and themed i think would be enough to shock the audience and i still would not get tipped much.
So really, i feel that anything different, themed, or well thought out would weird out most people in the strip club, regardless of how classy and "tease-like" it is. Its just so not the normm...therefore can be considered weird...sucks huh?
I did a cute china girl number and it was awesome....a few of the dancers looked at me funny...one guy really loved it and i made some cash off him.
go with what u love....there will be someone out there to dig it.
Some nights in my club i feel are more appropriate than others. Like tonight, all horny fuckers looking for sex or to just be dicks=non-appreciative...other nights i just get the vibe that there will be people out there to appreciate my artistic performances.

And yes, people do get weirded out when i wear a hallwoeen type costume on an ordinary month...that boggles me so much......entertainment goes with fantasy which goes with costumes....HELLO??

I have really been thinking about starting to do this on a regular basis. I used to do it several years ago and made alot of money off the costumes. None of the girls at my club does any type of themed things anymore. I really think that it would go over very well. I am getting a "costume" for Halloween, but after halloween when everything goes on sale I am going to stock up! LOL

i really love nostalgia. it crossed my mind a lot when i was working that i wished we made more of a "show" of it, pay tribute to back in the day when it was more about entertaining than shaved butts....more elaborate costumes, or if there was a live piano player and we could sing our own songs. (im the sort of nut who would do that...i'd sing gypsy rose lee songs, or the jessica rabbit song...lol)

sadly its kinda hard to put the effort into being artistic and entertaining when you need to hustle and make money...most places now pretty much have the same thing...it's like a lapdance factory. and especially in clubs with a lot of young guys or hick places they might not "get" the act...they just wanna see some titties!

but i think people in hip metro areas might dig it more, and the older set everywhere probably. older people remember when things weren't so cheap and spandexy.

one customer who really made me think about the "good ole days" was this one particular regular, a very polite older gentleman....the only man i have ever met in my life who ALWAYS stood up when a woman either approached/sat down at the table, or left it. out of respect! they don't make em like that anymore. and he was always real clean, dressed in a nice suit. never bought dances, but showered us girls in money onstage and would buy you a million drinks if you wanted. he made me feel like a lady, even in neon booty shorts (just like you said), and reminded me of an era long-gone and almost forgotten. that guy i think would definitely have appreciated something classy and old fashioned in the club. and he may not have been the only one.

There's got to be a way to adapt it and bring it up to speed for today's ADHD strip club audiences. I'm going to brainstorm.

Good for you! I would love to see more of that too. I saw an interview the other day with Dita Von Tease in which she talks about stripping in Vegas and how in Vegas, they've forgotten the most important part- the strip...the slow, sensual taking off of fancy and sexy clothes. I would love to see more of that! But alas, most of the dancerss here, when they come out on stage, are already half naked and don't leave much to the imagination. Perhaps when I start stripping, I can talk to the manager about adding a burlesque night or something...

Hmm...I think it has potential, but would need to be made more modern - maybe a bit faster paced or show more skin?
People were really fascinated by the Pussy Cat Dolls, the new version of Lady Marmalde, Chicago, and Moulin Rouge. Also, Bridgette from the Girls Next Door does an old style striptease at Hefner's 80th birthday and the crowd seems to enjoy it very much. (Aside from the fact that they got to see her awesome body naked, of course...)

My experience has been that, barring Portland audiences, which like anything unusual, anything burlesquey doesn't go over well in a strip club. Fans would be a bit over the top for sure. You'd have to make it pretty rock and roll and in your club, I don't know . . . it's such a large room that anything on the main stage only reads to about 40% of the bar in the first place.

You can incorporate some things - try something simple, like a sexy glove peel, to start with and see how it goes over. Also, incorporating some burlesquey dancing -- I don't really know how to describe it, but "working it", rather than the kind of faster stripping and dancing and ass shaking, you very deliberately tease when taking off clothes, very deliberately run your hands over your body -- is an aspect of BQ that can translate to the club. Exaggerate, emphasize, and be deliberate. And of course you can glam up outfits a bunch and wear lots of rhinestones, bling, stockings and gloves.

But getting up there with fans, a hat, and some pasties isn't going to do much more than waste your time. Like Jo Weldon (who cut her stripper teeth in ATL clubs) said, burlesque is about playing to the audience and stripping is about playing to the individual (who is giving us our next dollar).

I get a lot of attention for using "burlesque" moves, or at least thats what some of the older dancers say I am doing. I keep it fairly simple as my club is ultra rock-and-roll, but I will throw my fishnet shirt around someone's neck or rub their head with it, or be extra teasy with my bra and thongs and revealing my girlyparts. also i tend to wear more clothes than the average girl in my club so i make more of a show of taking them off. its all just because that's how i envision stripping being enjoyable, and how i'd enjoy to have it done for me.

also i think costumes work really well, personally, and i've been intending to do more. i made a killing on "talk like a pirate day" wearing my eyepatch, frilly tutu skirt, leather bikini and plastic sword.

That style pretty much is how I dress already - gloves, stockings, lots of rhinestones, sequins, beading, feathered skirts, corsets, cinchers, fringe, etc (a few girls at my club affectionately call me Vegas) - I just would like to step it up without putting the audience off. I do well onstage as is because I dance to rock and really work it one on one. I think I can make it more hip and modern by using modern music - like a sailor routine to music like "Candyman" by Christina Aguilera, or just a pure burlesque set to music like "Hell" by the Squirell Nut Zippers. I think it would work on a busy Thursday through Saturday, but not so much in the early week.

I don't want to repeat old routines, or try to be the new Jo Weldon or Dita, just combine the best of today's high energy stage routines and bring in burlesque aspects to set myself apart - and keep myself happy and having fun at work.

I have a three song set. First song, no fans, work it with one on one eye contact, get the top off halfway through. That and second song, use small fans. Learn some tricks the audience would like, but still be obvious about tits and ass. Last song, one fan, fully nude, go around and do more one on one. I'll try it - the worst that can happen is I puzzle a few people.

If you are just a house dancer, forget any elaborate props such as the fans. Stick with gloves, stockings, corsets for the "look" and inject some Burlesque style dancing into your stage routines. I do so with good effect

Except you do have to realise that Burlesque can't totally fit into the strip club "scene" as such because it is ultiamtely for an audience where we work "one on one" as such.

I would work on learning some basic burlesque moves. Maybe incorporate a chair into your routine and do some chair-based moves??? etc??
