Default how can I correct brassy highlights?

my highlights are turning brassy-ish. What's the best solution? Toner? Color enhancing shampoo? What shade? I've read great things about Artec on the forum but don't know what color to choose. Should I make my own custom blend? My options are limited in my area so it's not a simple drive to the beauty supply to pick up a bottle of Artec; I have to order it online. What should I do?

Buy Art Tec moisturizing rinse, in WHITE VIOLET. It neutralizes any yellow brassy tones and bring out blonde. I would leave it on my head for like 5-10 minutes. don't use everyday. you can find that line in the mall at the lke a trade secret

Toner is the quickest way to get rid of unwanted color with the longest lasting results. Just look for a light violet demi permanent color and apply it to towel dry hair. Then all you have to do is watch as it delevopes. When you get to the cooler tone you want, just rinse, shampoo, and condition as usual. Using a color depositing shampoo and conditioner with a color retaining shampoo and conditioner will help the brassiness from reocurring.

    Brilliant Silver White

It will tone down your brassy highlights within 1-2 washes and does not dry your hair out at all.

^I've seen artec on ebay. Never heard of brilliant white. Is that a professional product?

Anyhow, regarding the toner: Can you recommend a brand that I can pick up at Sally's?

Biogenol makes a shampoo called Violights, colorworks makes a bunch of different shades including a purple one, and there's one called shimmering lights. i think sally's is most likely to have the last one.

if you go and tell them what you're looking for i'm sure they'll recommend something.

the last few times I've asked questions or recommendations of the ladies in Sally's...I just haven't been very pleased with their short, curt answers. In fact, I asked one over a year ago (during my last brassy highlights moment) and she was most unhelpful. I prefer the infinite beauty wisdom that is SW.

Online would be your best bet. It's an Aussie product so if you live elsewhere you probably wouldn't have heard of it. It's the HG of many hairdressers Down Under.

i found art tec at the mall-- trade secret store, or any other like store in the mall that sells beauty stuff. they mave have similar versions at sally, but like others said anything that says violet or brilliant whtie or silver-- you can even buy horse shampoo (it comes in purple, cant think of the name) specifically for white horses that will also get the yellow out of your hair. just dont use it to often or you will turn silver!

I dunno jack about Sallys brands, but here's a link to an ebay auction for a professional color line that I'd hgihly reccomend (Latina Rose is a big fan, too).

You want 9V... You also want the coodinating developer. Mix them in equal parts. Just to be on the safe side, I'd add some Crystal Clear 000 to the formula... Like 1 oz of 9V, 1 oz Crystal Clear 000, and 2 oz developer.

If you go to Sally's, look for a violet demi permanent in a level 9 or lighter. You don't want any background colors (colors mixed with brown) so avoid anything that says "neutral violet," "brown violet," etc. I'd still mix with a clear color to dilute the violet or else if you leave the toner on too long you could have slightly lavendar tinted highlights for a couple of shampoos.

OK, Clairol Shimmer Lights Shampoo (better than ArTec and Rusk) I have every violet shampoo available and shimmer lights is not only the best but the cheapest.

Wash with it once - rinse then wash again and leave in about 10 minutes. Do this and your hair will not turn brassy. I do it as soon as my hair starts to turn that yellowish color... about once a week.

You can get this at Sallys... you dont need a toner - this works just as well and is a lot easier.

Why don't you go back to the salon and get them to apply a toner? My salon always did it for free to keep me happy (usually about the 3-4 week mark, I got highlights every 6 weeks).

And I LOVE the Redken Shades EQ Mia M posted. It gives you such glossy, rich bitch hair. They even have a clear shade that is just for shine and gloss and it is AMAZING. I'm getting a dark brown gloss done next week.

thanks for the info, I would have my girl tone it down but I just don't have time and I go out of town this weekend. I'll pick up some shimmerlights at sally's but keep the other tips in mind for the future. thanks again.

I'm at the 3-4 week mark so I guess this is par for the course, eh?

Angry Re: That bitch at Sally's is crazy, I tell ya!

so I went to Sally's tonight to pick up the shimmer lights. I grabbed the shampoo and conditioner, headed up to the cash register to ask if that would work for me or should I do a toner. Cute, gothic chick suggested a toner. Unyouthful, dated-hair dragon lady said no, I didn't want toner because I "could change the color of my hair." I said, "Um, but it's almost black (level 3 demi-permanent)" She said it didn't matter, that I'm using a developer with the toner and could turn my hair orange. In addition, she ragged on my highlights, asked if I did foils or cap (does anybody even use the cap method anymore???) and how long did I leave the bleach on because my hair didn't lift enough. She said I could try the shimmer lights (gee, thanks) but it wasn't going to do anything.

I ended up getting just the conditioner. Left it on for one minute. I do see some improvement in some of the highlights but not all so I will try again tomorrow. If it doesn't work the way I want though I will really need a toner. The problem is I am flying out of town early Friday morning and I really want my hair to look good! For backup purposes, is there ANYTHING I can pick up (preferably at the drugstore but I will grudgingly go back to Sally's) to temporarily tone down my highlights? Would semi-permanent something be ok for a 4 day weekend?

Oh yeah, one more question: what if I left the conditioner on for say...I dunno...a long time...5-15 minutes. Would some of my highlights really turn silver? And if I don't like how my hair looks after condition job #2, can I safely use a dye product over it? Please help! I have to look smokin' and it won't happen with brassy hair!!!

You would have been better off getting ONLY the shampoo over ONLY the conditioner

Hey now - listen to me.. IM A BLOND and a licensed cosmetologist - Dragon Lady at Sallys is NOT LICENSED. Shes an idiot that makes $8 an hour selling Shimmer Lights.

They may look a tiny bit bluish for a day - but its not noticible. it only happens on pieces that are already really really light. I doubt you have much to worry about but no you wont have silver hair... my hair is bleached almost Gwen light and i leave it on 20 minutes and it doesnt turn blue or silver - i just get some really white (almost bluish) pieces of hair. Not noticable.

    LOL!

My favorite part of LSM's story is when Dragon Lady tells her her highlights could turn orange because of the developer. Yes, she definately is an idiot.

hahaha I called my girl last night just to tell her what I was doing (I felt like I needed her "approval") plus I wanted to tell her the story. She practically roared like a lion, "We're going back there and I'm going to DEMAND to see her license!"
