I've been eating right, getting lots of protein, and doing ab exercises every other day. How long 'til I get shredded abs?
I'm 5'5" and 133-135.
This is probably a dumb question, but whatevs.
I want to have Brit circa 2001 abs.

Has less to do with doing ab exercises and more to do with total body workouts. Probably twice a day.

um.. youve been doing this for how long? it takes time to get like that and it certainly isnt going to happen fast.
Plus you cant spot train...you have to not only build the muscle, but burn the fat off the top of it. If you are working out say..5 days a week doing both weights and cardio...you should start seeing SOME results in a cpl months. Depending on where you are to being with...it could take a year to get there.
I've been doing crunches for several months, but I never started to see any ab definition at all until I started doing major cardio and cutting back on consumption. After losing over 10 pounds, I can finally see the muscles hiding under the jiggle. There's still a little fat sitting on top of my abs, but I'm still exercising with weights, cardio, and crunches, and when I burn off the rest of the fat, the toned abs will be able to shine in all their glory.
But if I wasn't doing cardio and reducing my calorie intake, it wouldn't matter how toned my abdominal muscles got, because you'd never see them under the fat. You just have to burn fat all over first. There is no spot-training with fat.
You have to burn fat and gain muscle. As you lose weight your abs will become more apparant.
At a certain point, it becomes all about diet, and the process is slow. Dependant upon how your body stores fat.
People who are fit, can try anywhere between 2 and 3 YEARS to do it the healthy way, but we're human and you have to have an immaculate diet to get there. Once there, it's hard to loose, but it becomes a battle of diet and genetics at some point because if you work the muscles out TOO much, they'll show at offset your shape.
If you want this, switch up your cardio and ab routine. NOW. Do it again every 6 months. When your muscles get used to your workouts, they become efficient at it, and do more while burning less.
For cardio, it's best to get it in in the early morning, typically before your breakfast for the greater calorie burn. Then take your supplements if you do. (Early morning cardio to achieve maximum heart rate over a period of time like running/elliptical on a single setting does a great job of waking you up.) I would then suggest returning in the day to do your other workouts, but through in some High Intensity Interval Training and some Ab workouts on an ab ball (forces greater control)
Also be wary of burning yourself out trying to break the plateau. If your body starts burning that lean muscle for energy, you're working back words.
As for your diet, eat fiber/protein and a LOT. I was stuck at a plateu, and broke it by actually EATING MORE, upping my calorie intake on the protein and fiber side from 2000-2200 cals a day to 2400-3000 cals a day.
I do my abs about 4 times a week, and cardio twice a day, and have been for years with a few days off during the month, and see very little improvement until I change up my routine. Someday I'll have my abs.
Hope this helps.
People are not ruled by their memories.

Well... Britney worked out for HOURS every day just rehearsing moves let alone the rumored 1000 crunches she did every day.
In order to show definition, you need to lose fat. Also you need to work your entire ab area. Sit up after sit up won't do it. Do planks, leg lifts, etc. And also continue challenging yourself. When 50 crunches gets easy, it's time to start doing more (however keep in mind it's quality not quantity).
There's no telling how long it'll take. Some people are seemingly born with awesome abs and others will never get there even with a good amount of work.

if you do 15 or 20 minutes of cardio before your ab workout, it will make it a lot more effective. the same is true for any muscle building/toning workout. cardio first to get your blood flowing and burn off some fat and it just works so much better.
When I worked out, it took me 2 months to see ab definition.
But I was walking at a fast pace for 8 hours a day carrying weight, my gym routine was pretty lax tho...20-40 minutes treadmill at an incline with intervals, and I worked my abs every other day on a stability ball. I went from 133 to 122 in 2 months with that routine.
ut like others have pointed out...proper diet and cardio is really key to ab definition. You could have the most awesome 6 pack, but if it's hiding under a layer of fat, you'll never see it.
I think you have to get your body fat under 15% to see real ab definition. ( I think that's what i read. My body fat was 17% and I as begining to see definition.)
There is one certain point and that is from the time you decide to lose weight/tone your body...EVERYTHING you put into your body matters.
Midsection fat/lack of "tone" has more to do with diet than any other part of your body. If you want kick-ass abs, you have to eat healthy and properly or you won't achieve it. Abs are STRICTLY about diet. If you have a piss poor diet, and are doing lots of cardio and weights, your abs still won't get cut.
Tighten up your diet, do your cardio and your weights and you will see the changes in your abs.
thanks, everybody- this post is a WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE. thank you thank you.
