    Sad The Flatulent Vegan

I've always heard that vegans fart a lot, but man oh man am I living it firsthand now. I'm a one-man band. I'm eating a veg stir-fry every day because it's delicious and quick, but it's got TONS of fiber in it (bok choy, chard, broccoli, spinach, brown rice, etc.) and I'm sure it's the primary culprit. I'm also eating a lot of fruit, even more than usual. It's definitely healthier and I feel great, but does this go away or should I just get used to making music wherever I go?

I definitely drink tons of water and chew thoroughly, so that's good. How long does this usually last? It would be nice if it cleared up before K came home in two weeks so we don't spend our first night together in six weeks lying in a Dutch oven.

Eating meat makes me gassier, and bloated. Lots of veggies are just perfect for my digestion.

nothing to add here, except I that I avoid certain gassy foods if I'm going to work that night or something like that when I don't want to fart

Perhaps some sort of enzyme or digestive supplement from the health food store?

Probiotics should help - you know, acidophilus and those little "living organism" things you can get at Whole Foods. Get the kind that's refrigerated. I like this brand:

I never had abnormal gas when I was vegan, but I know those who did... whoa buddy. I've gone back to being a veg... When I finish my internship I'll go back to being vegan.

I take a shot of chlorophyll. I buy it in bottles from hippy stores, it's alfalfa based and liquid green. Not only does it deodorize me from the inside, it helps with digestion. And makes my pee the color of lemon-lime gatorade

I agree with trying the probiotics. I also know some who have found that eating fruit only on an empty stomach can help (I think a good deal of the food-combining theory is bull, but some of the principles may help some folks with certain issues, and I know fruit combined with other things can give certain people gas).

I agree with taking chlorophyll too. It makes your poo smell purrrrty too.

Hm, I'll try the chlorophyll and probiotics. The smoothie bar at my gym sells little shots of chlorophyll. How often do you take it?

Hmm! I hadn't heard about the chlorophyll. I'm especially curious about the making-your-poo-smell-purty part!

By the way, Yekhefah, "The Flatulent Vegan" just SCREAMS book title . . .

I find it helps to add the extra fibre gradually too...All at once, and your body will produce gas until it gets used to it. Peppermint tea, ginger, fennel tea...these are all helpful for gas. Especially a cup of fennel tea before a meal. Also, I get gassy if I work-out too soon after a meal, or if I sit/ recline after a meal. Moving gently around helps digestion too, but strenous excercise is best on an empty stomach.

You're talking about shots of wheatgrass? Those are good.

Lately I've been taking chlorophyll twice a day. You can get a shot of wheatgrass once a day if you don't mind spending the money.

Oh, you're right! I've had some ginger tea the last couple of days just because I like it, and yeah, the gas has gone down considerably. I'll keep having the ginger tea until my tummy gets used to all this extra fiber.

Peppermint and chamomile are both anticarminative. Maybe a cup of peppermint tea in the morning and chamomile tea at night?

This is a true story, I believe--or at least I read it in what I thought was a reputable, reliable source.

There was a vegan guy who actually died from breathing his own gaseous expulsions in a confined space. What's worse, the Fire/Rescue guys who broke in to try and save him were smitten as well, and two of them were hospitalized as a result!

I'm slowly converting to veg/vegan for health reasons and I think trying the chlorophyll might be a good idea..
    What brand/type do you get?

This is what I use, and have for years!
I take a shallow shotglass of this twice a day with meals. Especially with meals that I know I'll have problems with (It keeps my stomach from hating me!)
They have pills too, but I prefer the liquid. And the peeing/pooing greeness that happens afterwards

I'm getting that, because Beano does not work on me.

I'm looking forward to the gatorade making now.

    I like pooping green personally.

Something else that helps me is breathing into diaphragm. It's belly breathing but not the kind where you stick your stomach out. You breathe deep into diaphragm and into lower lobs of lungs. Or think of bepanding your ribs sideways instead of flaring your ribs.
