Default Contractor delema need ans. quick

I have to call 2nd guy by 3pm CST today
So I had a guy look at my roof damage, & give me a quote. He was used by a few ppl in my area. He said he'd come by today & fix, unless it rained, which it was supposed to. He said Thurs. (tomorrow) would be rain date to fix. Last night it did rain, but this morn. (he was supposed to come @ 8:30am) was clear & sunny. One could argue, it being rained on last night counts? I keep damage covered w/plastic at all times.
So, another guy, also in the area, happend to drive by, & said he'd do it cheaper. I was trying to get ahold of him before, but he's been busy. Also, he did some work for another lady, (deck paint) & she said he didn't finish/do it correctly. He has tho, built some decks around here previously (really nice work). So I dunno.
I did promise 1st guy the job, so really I owe it to him? Damn.

on the one hand, you apparently agreed to a Thursday rain date ... and it did rain ! Thus if you cut out this first contractor before Thursday you may be liable for 'breach of verbal contract'.

My own opinion is that with the months of suffering you've gone through already with your water leaks, waiting one more day to have the damage fixed RIGHT is a tiny sacrifice. As to price, there's usually a lot of truth in the saying 'you get what you pay for' ... which appears to be corroborated by neighbor reports on the second contractor. Even so, when this guy's crew starts working I would watch them like a hawk to make sure they don't take any sloppy shortcuts.

    Yep.!^
I already called 2nd guy, I told him I promised 1st guy for tomorrow & would have him do the work. If he (1st guy) doesn't show, then 2nd can do the repair. The roof damage, oddly enough, (TG!) does not leak. It's the siding above a double window on the other side (which was there when I moved in, since a couch was in front of said windows) which leaks. I didn't discover leak until a funiture change & some snow. Right now the leaking window/siding is ok, I used some Dap brand foam. I'm having the 2nd guy get a price on the siding/window repair today. Thanks, Mel.

Have you been able to get in touch with guy #1 to confirm that he will be there tomorrow?

I've found with most contractors that if you dont pester them and watch them like a hawk...they slack off like crazy.

Also...DO NOT pay in full until you have had the work inspected and it has passed to the inspectors AND your satisfaction.

Every contractor I've ever hired has tried to screw me over. Now, this is pretty prevalent in every business here...but when I'm shelling out a crapload of money and the work will mean to increase or decrease or my property value...I'm FAR less likely to let anything go.

Hey, thanks, dear. Well, guy #1 is here now, working away. I was out awhile, & he was here when I came back!
