Default Wow... I didn't know these existed

I was watching a documentary and this girl who committed suicide was part of a "suicide forum".. I did an online search just out of curiosity, and I'm shocked that things like that exist. Check out this thread:

No, this isn't one of those "I have a friend who...." but really I'm talking about me stories. I'm seriously in shock and just want to help all of those people.

That's a thread full of people who want to die and no one offering words for the otherwise. If it's supposed to be a support forum, what is that kind of thread support for? To support and encourage them to go through with it????

I couldn't handle being on that forum. I'd be too afraid to get comfortable with anybody there, because everyday you log in you could easily hear how somebody on there actually committed suicide. That forum would make me worse if I was suicidal.

It does look like they encourage each other not to do it. I think its actually a good thing. Just being able to get those feelings out and talk to people who understand how you feel can sometimes literally mean the differance between life and death.

This wasn't the exact forum the other girl was on, this one does seem slightly more encouraging that the oroginal one. The one she was on had people telling her that she just needed to die, she would be better off that way etc.

I just can't believe there are so many people out the contemplating it. Anybody read the guy's long list of reasons he wanted to die and how he was saving up to buy a handgun? I read another thread where somebody was going to kill herself in 7 days because her parents were going out of town and she didn't want them to be there to stop her from doing it.

On that documentary there was a 13 year old boy who was teased mercilessly in school and he used the tie from his little sister's bathrobe and hung himself from the shower curtain rod after his family had gone to bed. His little sister went in there there next morning to get ready for school and found him hanging there.

There was an episode of Law & Order SVU that had something like that...and you know they do get their ideas from real life.

copy and pasted from the site: its the last post on the thread.

I'm writing for my daughter, she can't write after her attempt. She can't do much matter of fact. She was only 15yr.Didn't get a chance to get married or have kids..I come on this site and just cry cause i don't understand why she doesn't get a do over. Why she can't write and tell about surviving a suicide. When i found her she looked like she didn't suffer. She could have gotten up before she passed out.She was standing and just let her legs go.She hung herself in our basement.I still can't get that horrible pic out of my head..So now she struggles everyday and night for everything..So i think she had no fear or pain but her discomfort is going to last the rest of her life.

Sad stuff, but complex and risky to get involved in. You really have to figure out first how much your desire to fix these people (aka help) is for your benefit vs theirs, and your dealing with people that may well go through with it because of something you write that triggers them to make the final decision (no matter how careful and well meaning you are).

I go on a forum that is mainly for eating disorders but also depression, drug addiction, SIers, etc. It is really sad how many people struggle although on the site I go on it's really supportive and nobody would ever be like "oh, just off yourself already".

Unfortunately there's a lot of online how to guides on killing yourself too. I mean, what the fuck?

Yeah I knew they existed. I looked at them way back when I was in HS & a bit suicidal, but I never participated. There's also tons of sites that support eating disorders, where the girls cheer each other on about not eating more than a cracker a day for example. I believe there's pretty much a place for everyone to congregate on the net.

Suicide is one of the most painful and unresolved things for someone and their famiies to go throught. I used to work in a children's hospital with suicide kids that were on life support but really just dead brains with lung machines. When you really see suicide....the 14 year old kid who strangeled himself, just laying there white and dead his familiy in hystarics and then putting them into a body bag with stuffed animals i picked out for him....people say being a stripper may ruin my life but that image and experience has done worse for me than anything i can imagine.

Or taught you something about grief, life and death, and human potential for despair that you would never have understood without that experience...

It all makes me sad and nauseous. I attempted several times when I was young and was locked up for a while. Glad I got better.

I'm not going anywhere woman! Not when I might have the chance to hang with you. R is trying to get his mom to move out to Florida once we sell the house. But with this market, that could be a while...

I guess the only thing I could say here is that people need to realize that while it makes them uncomfortable that there is someone in their midst who is seriously contemplating or trying suicide, they need to keep in mind that the whole world doesn't revolve around them and what makes them uncomfy. People in this position in life do need support, but they need true support, not cheap knock offs intended to make the supporter feel less uncomfortable. It sounds like you found your way out BG - best wishes going forward.

I don't see why not, if you think it will be helpful. I just couldn't personally.

I don't know what the word "bad" means in this context, but you can realistically ask yourself why. Is it for you? To make yourself feel less uncomfy or to explore a power trip, or is it for these other people. At least be entirely honest with yourself going on what your motives are.

That seems like a very good reason to me, the very best reason! Nothing wrong with needing some support yourself and talking to others who have had a similar experience. I guess personally I'd only feel like it was ?bad? if someone really can't relate and went there to try and power trip or ease their own discomfort with what they don't understand through personal or professional experience.
