    Default 2 jobs...taxes?

Hey everyone. I was wondering about something regarding dancing and paying taxes. I am looking into dancing but I'm not really sure how to file taxes. I still live at home and my dad takes care of all that. Can I just not pay taxes on the money I earn from dancing, since I already have a day job as a waitress at a restaraunt? I pay taxes from that job, so do you think the IRS would be suspicious if I did that?

What you are proposing is illegal.

Will the IRS or your state tax authority catch you? Maybe, maybe not. A lot depends on how much you make dancing. Periodically the IRS and state tax authorities "target" certain industries for enforcement. You don't want to be caught in one of these targeted enforcements. I know lots of waiters and waitresses in Indy who still regret not reporting most of their tip income.

Can you? Sure, do whatever you want. Is it legal? No. Will you get in trouble? Depends.

More likely though you will be shooting yourself in the foot when you go to buy yourself a nice house or car or something with all your dancing money and not be able to because you can't prove your income well without tax returns.

also, if you still live at home, and if your parents still claim you as a dependent, if tax irregularities were to ever be discovered re unreported dancing income the consequences could go far beyond your own taxes. The discovery of unreported dancing income could very well disqualify you from being claimed as a dependent on your parents' tax return, which in turn could result in both of you being audited and both of you being subject to additional taxes + penalties + interest.
