    NaNoWriMo

I bought a couple of years ago and swore I'd enter the National Novel Writing Month competition, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. This year, I think, is the year. November is and I will write a 50,000 word novel in those 30 days. Who wants to join me? Get the book now and read it so you know what to do, and on December 1 we can all start the Christmas season with finished novels behind us!

Do we give up SW? Cuz that's the only way I could get it done.

What better motivation to get me off my ass---err, back on my ass in front of the computer! I've been telling myself "Oh, I have so much time now and interesting people to write about, why o why am I not writing yet?" Lame excuses, meet thy maker.

    It's on!

I'm gonna have to cut back on SW... but I should do that anyway.

Has anyone ever done this? It seems like a lot of people have. There's a forum on the website for support and everything. I think writing a novel in 30 days will be really good for me; I used to be a really prolific writer, until I got into screenwriting, which is so rigidly structured it's now quite difficult for me to write. A loose free-for-all in prose might get my groove back. Hope so, anyway!

Oh, and if anyone wants to drop me a note on the NaNoWriMo forum, my username there is Kelilah!

The only finished works I have are erotic short stories, which while quite good, are not exactly earning me bank. As much as I hmmmm about My Grand Purpose In Life, it's probably writing. I just don't....write. So this is a great kick in my ass.

    And I'm up as MegMcUffin.

MAN. My Great American Novel. Still festering in a drawer. Maybe this could light a fire under my ass . . . ? And yeah, I'd have to cut back on SW too. Stop being so entertaining, everyone, dang it! It really depends on other projects in November, though, I have two big gigs, and some ongoing stuff, so we'll see . . .

"NaNoWriMo" sounds like a mantra. Like Nam Myoho Renge Kyo (remember that?). Maybe I'll start my writing sessions by chanting it for luck!

I've been in a couple writing groups where everyone tries to motivate everyone else to write and then they critique each other.

The problems that I had with it are:

    1. You get too caught up in critique, both of yourself and others. I mean, constructive criticism is good, but there's just been too much focus on that for me.

    2. You waste time trying to be tender and helpful about some really hopelessly dreadful writing (and maybe they felt that way about me). Some people need to be told, "Ain't a chance, pal."

But I can see where some goal-oriented mutual support could work well. It's worth a shot.

That's what I love about NaNoWriMo, Jay. The quality of the writing is completely irrelevant. It's all about the word count! The assumption is that 50,000 words of a rotten first draft still makes for more progress than 50 words of excellent writing that never become anything else. Participants in this program are advised to forget about quality and editing until the month is over, and just worry about getting something written. It's very freeing.

I'm doing it! That's when I am doing The Novel that I put on hold for the time being. Glad to know other SW'ers are doing it. We should make a member board.

I was thinking about doing a novel version of one of my screenplay projects, then adapting the novel back into a script. But I don't think I want to do that. I want to take a total break from screenwriting and just let the total freedom of prose take over. So I'll do a completely different story... don't know what yet, but I want to set it in Memphis. I'll mull over some character ideas over the next few weeks and come November 1, I'll just turn them loose on the page and see what they do. I think this will be a great opportunity to get unblocked.

Well the next step is to light a REAL fire under your ass. Oh I will. Oh wait... hmmm I will definitely in MAY.

But really, both of you, you should TOTALLY do this, you're both such talented and amazing writers and I've seen BOTH works...

though admitting I've read some of Yek's stuff is like a violation of our friend agreement isn't it?

You both should give this a go! Really! I'll EVEN accept progress as a Christmas gift. I know I know, you were going to do something big for me Yek, and I appreciate it, but really, I just want to read more of your stuffs.

Sounds like fun, I think I'll give it a go as well, if I can get the book in time.

Wow, I almost bought NPNP the other day at the campus bookstore. It was sitting smack dab next to the 101 Things to do with Tofu book. Weiiiird. I think they were in the "gift books" section right by the door. I had to hold off because I've been going book buying crazy lately.

I might join the challenge if I'm making good timing on my research project by then and have my other screenplay in the can. I hate having to write screenplays for a grade. I feel so much more pressure and have avoided any classes requiring them for years now.

It would be fun to finally finish a novel though.

My friend does it every year. I should probably do it, cause I'm about 50k words behind in life, but I dunno if I could actually do it.

^^^ Why not? I bet anyone who really wants to do it can find the time. It's only an hour or two per day, or you can stockpile the time and go nuts one or two days a week. I personally would be extremely interested in reading a Lena novel; your blog is so well-written, I'm sure your novel would be too.

Am I alone in feeling weird with the thought of my parents reading smut produced by my hands? I don't want them knowing what my twisted mind defaults to. But the only relatively interesting real life experiences I could pull from are sexual. Aaahhh quandary! Play it safe and possibly never get to the 50k or play it raunchy and drop my support system.

Yes lots of brainstorming over the next coupla weeks.

Who says your parents have to read it? I'm damn sure not giving my fiction to my parents to read. I'll be writing a pretty highly sexed novel as well, and it's extremely doubtful that my family will ever see a page of it.

The main reason I don't live in Memphis anymore is so that I can be free to create without worrying about relatives' opinions. I was completely stifled and blocked as an artist (not just a writer) until I put some distance between us and grew past caring what they think.

Just a reminder if anyone else wants to join the NaNoWriMo circus! You can sign up and join the forums (it's free) and the writing madness commences November 1. That's one week from today so you can officially get gung-ho on your research now!

Glad you bumped this, Yek! Today I started scheming up some characters, location, and a teensy bit of potential plot developments. Getting excited!

Me too! I was originally going to write one of my screenplay projects in novel form, hoping that would make it easier to adapt it into a screenplay afterward. Then I decided to write a new story and set it in Memphis, and I wrote a bunch of stuff on the character, possible story ideas, etc... but now I'm back to the screenplay idea. It's just better. A 50,000 word novella would be the perfect size for screenplay adaptation later, and I already know these characters. I'm looking forward to hitting the road with them next week!

However, I have my "writing cap" which is really cute but I told myself I only get to wear it when I'm writing, so it's my motivation to keep going. Here we gooooo!

I never did get a totem! Maybe I will today. Wish I had a good Aussie akubra... most of my story will take place in the outback so it would be nice to have. Maybe I'll start with my funky pink hat for the part that takes place in California and get the akubra later when they go to Australia.
