Default POTW in Teeth_of_the_Hydra!!! Come in miss thang!

It runs from Sunday to Sunday so when it is your turn to be POTW you will be in the spotlight for a whole week.

Everyone can ask questions and it is up to the POTW to decide if they would like to answer them. Some questions may be too personal and that is fine - you don't have to answer everything.

This thread is not an appropriate forum to settle old scores or to flame. Do not bait the POTW with questions that bring up past transgressions. Please spin-off if you feel the need but let's keep this thread fun and supportive.

On Friday of each week I will PM the current POTW and ask them to choose the next person. The POTW can choose anyone who asked a question on their thread that week and someone, preferably, who has not been chosen in the past year. If you do not wish to be POTW you can still ask questions, just let the current POTW know that you do not want to be chosen for the next week (for instance, you will be out of town).

    Previous POTW:

    Hey!

    Mademoiselle Teeth,

What's your favourite book? What's your favourite movie?

Do you drink coffee? Do you believe in astrology and/ or aliens? How many constellations can you identify, if any?

    Merci!

These are the silly questions I always want to survey people about.

I will ask the question about the million dollars, but mess with you further by saying you have one month to spend it, and you aren't allowed to buy real estate or automobiles. Hah!

Wow guys, these are really good questions. Also, wow guys, Person of the Week feels like a really big deal to me! This is possibly because I've never won anything like a trophy or a plaque or an honorable mention, so the novelty is just overwhelming.

Anyway, in the order they were asked, here are the answers to your questions. For organization's sake I have numbered them.

    1. Who was your first crush?

A cute kid named Jonathan Bandel. It was the summer between fifth and sixth grade, so I was 10, almost 11, and about to enter middle school. Jonathan had gone to the same elementary school as me, but he was a year older, so he'd been in middle school for a year already, which made him seem unbelievably hip and worldly. His dad was the driver of the minibus we took to camp, so Jonathan got on the bus before me. Sometimes-- but not always, which made it way more exciting-- when I'd get on the bus he'd ask me to sit with him. Every morning I'd board the bus holding my breath with my fingers crossed hoping he'd look up at me, move his baseball mitt and say, "You wanna sit here?" Then he'd tell me all about what to do in order to fit in in middle school, which, according to him, entailed use of the terms "phat" and "fly."

That makes me wonder what he's up to now. I haven't been on Myspace in months but maybe I'll log in today.

    2. Do you like Summer or Winter better?

Summer, by far. Cold weather makes me grumpy and uncomfortable, and I hate how barren and gray everything looks in the winter. I moved to Florida for the same reason the old people do-- the weather!

    3. If you won a million dollars what would you do?

Gosh. Well, I'd give a heap of it to my parents and tell them to take a goddamn vacation. I'd ask my grandmother if she'd consider going into assisted living... as it is now, I think she should, because I worry about her mobility, but she doesn't want to spend the money. I'd pay off my BF's and my best friend's student loans. I'd buy a new car, because mine is starting to get really terrible gas mileage, and the AC system has a slow leak (what kind of car, you ask? Why, another Buick LeSabre, of course. I love my old man car). I'd take the outdoor ed course that I really want to take but cannot afford right now. Then I'd send Melonie a PM and ask for advice. Depending on what she said, I might buy a house. Or find something more worthwhile to invest in. I know nothing about managing money but it seems one really ought to learn if one comes into a million dollars.

Oh, and I'd travel for at least 2 years, with the boy if he'd like to come. I can do that on about 30K, though. Maybe 40K for the 2 of us. I like traveling cheap.

    4. What's your favourite book?

Hmm... that's a tough one, because I have like 2 favorite books in several respective genres. I don't think I can narrow it down past that!

In fiction, Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood, or possibly Cat's Eye, also by Atwood. I love her. I want to eat what she writes, chew it up, swallow it completely, holy crap, I love her so much.

In short fiction, I adore the collection The Girl in the Flammable Skirt by Aimee Bender. I also really love First, Body by Melanie Rae Thon.

In poetry, it's a pretty even tie between Bad Alechemy by Dionisio Martinez and Tulips and Chimneys by e.e. cummings.

Finally, in children's lit, I love the poem "The Jumblies" by Edward Lear. Since I have it in picture book form, it counts as a favorite book for our purposes.

    5. What's your favourite movie?

The Company of Wolves. I don't care what all the haters on IMDB say about it being plotless, pretentious, stupid, gory, unconvincing, dated... I could watch this movie every week for the rest of my life. I also really liked the Cube trilogy.

    6. Do you drink coffee?

Hell yeah. I love coffee. I've been drinking it since I was a small child, because my parents gave it to me in a bottle. I still have no idea why they thought this was okay... they're otherwise very cautious, conservative people.

    7. Do you believe in astrology and/ or aliens?

Not really, though I think they're both interesting things to think about.

    8. How many constellations can you identify, if any?

It's funny, because I think I've learned about constellations two hundred times in my life... in science class, at the planetarium, on TV, on camping trips, on boat trips... but I can still only identify Orion and the Big Dipper. I can't even find the Little freakin' Dipper. I might be able to point out the Southern Cross, or maybe it's the Northern Cross, but I'm not certain.

    9. If you could never see one color ever again, what color would you most like to disappear? What color would you least like to have disappear?

I'm really attached to my color vision, but I guess if I had to choose, I'd eliminate hunter's orange (you know, that neon color that allegedly helps people not get shot). I don't think I'd miss it much. It would be very important to me that green didn't get messed with. Green is my absolute favorite color, all shades. I think I'd actually die of sorrow in a world without green. People sometimes talk about how cool it would be to colonize Mars, and all I can think of is, dude, I would hate that, because Mars is so ungreen!

Hmmm... I'd pretty much do all the stuff I already listed, except I guess I couldn't buy a new Buick. Could I pay for new boobs instead, even if I didn't want to get them within a month's time? What about plane tickets? Could I buy, like, 2 years' worth of plane tickets and pay the rent on remote tropical villas and make dive trip reservations and safari arrangements and stuff for my 2-year trip? Does that count?

Oh, I'd also bribe your landlord to permit you to get a cat. That is your reward for nominating me for this supercool better-than-a-trophy POTW thing.

I suppose I've never thought about it before, but truth be told, one of my ex-boyfriends has left a lasting impression on me. Even though he was kind of controlling and borderline abusive and we had a pretty shitty relationship toward the end, he taught me a lesson that I now live by, one which I may not have learned anywhere else. That lesson is, I have a choice. There is nothing in this world that I have to do, short of dying at some point. I do not have to do my homework, or give a lapdance, or smoke a cigarette, or pay my rent, or succumb to the expectations of others. There is always an alternative. Now, the alternative may be shitty or uncomfortable or ridiculous or highly unlikely, but it exists. Embracing this idea has helped me stop blaming others, because I no longer plod through life claiming to be "forced" to do something, feeling like I don't have a choice. I still feel coerced sometimes, or bamboozled, or bullied, and (embarassingly) I'm still not very steadfast in the face of these negative influences, but I try to remember that the final choice is always mine, and I have ultimate control over what happens to me.

Not... exactly. Or rather, it vacillates. I should state that I consider theism to be a belief in the paranormal, and I go back and forth between being convinced of some all-knowing divinity, and being certain of a grand and gaping nothingness just beyond the limits of our own selves. At times the whole of earth seems alive, actually living and ordered, cognizant and communicative and determined to impart upon me its pantheistic wisdom. Other times it seems a despairing mess from which I can glean nothing. I have yet to reach a final verdict on this whole mess. Ask me again in a decade or so and maybe I'll be more decisive.

Honestly? I will be in LA from October 23rd- November 13th. If you are able to drive down we can split a cheap motel room and have the rockingest slumber party ever. PM me.

    A. This question comes at an interesting time, because I recently had to choose between the two, and suprisingly, I chose money. I'm not going to give the details of the situation except to say that it had nothing to do with stripping (no OTC, no sex, no prostitution). And you know what? I have regretted it every day since. I can't stop thinking about what a sellout I am. If I could get a do-over on this situation, I would in a heartbeat, and if I'm ever presented with the choice again, I'd choose love, for all the world.

    B. Friends, definitely. Shit, I think I'd choose enemies over fame! Being famous actually sounds horrendous, unless I was a famous writer, i.e., the kind of famous where most people don't actually know what you look like. I think I'd commit suicide within a year if I was tabloid famous... seriously. I don't have a thick enough skin to get picked apart like that.

    C. See the reply to my million-dollar question. Does that work if I condense my actvities within a week's time, or is that cheating? Well... if it's cheating, I guess if I only had a week to do stuff and could only use the money for things that occurred within that week, I'd get a bunch of cosmetic procedures and dental work done, including a crown on my right front tooth and one on my left incisor, boobs and lipo, hair extensions, tattoo improvement, and laser for my under-eye wrinkles. I'd rather have the cash though, so I could travel like a gypsy for a few years!

Thanks for such excellent answers. I love Cat's Eye. I think I've read almost everything by Atwood...I was obsessed with her writing several years ago. I met her twice...well, spoke to her twice...as in "can you sign this please?". She's so scary in person. Very tiny and these bright, intense blue eyes...but maybe she just hates book signings. She does give an excellent speech though. Also, the third time I saw her, she was wandering through the aisles of the National Archives building.

/ end of digression. More Teeth trivia!

(I don't know how many questions I'm allowed to ask, but if I could just one more...what are you most afraid of?)

BG, real quick: I was hoping to organize a small SW-fest kinda thing while I'm out there, but since I'm a slacker I haven't contacted anyone to make plans yet. Yekh is my buddy, so I'm hoping I can compel her all last-minute style to hang out with me... I was also hoping to finally meet Alexxa and Embyr (ladies, take note!). Perhaps we should start one thread about a SoCal mini SWfest for the purposes of planning. Okay, now I must go play outside before it gets dark and my internal mom tells me to come home. Molly, I will answer you when I return as well. BRB...

I thought someone relatively unknown and low profile was going to be picked for the next POTW. I mean, TOTH is very high profile. DJ, did you cave to pressure?

Well since it a done deal, I do have a question. TOTH, how did you decide on your screen name? I mean we all know about Hydras (from Greek mythology cut off one head and two will take its place) but Im trying to figure how that fits into modern dentistry.

I started one already. It says LA ladies, but we can broaden it to SoCal.

I'm very iffy if I can even do it, as I have no job, and even though the map says 512 miles from Lakeport to LAX, that still doesn't account for traffic.

DING! We have a winner! I was reading this and thinking, 'nah, she's breaking the rules', until you mentioned bribing my landlord. Yes, of course you get to spend the million dollars this way.

I like old jazz, though I'm not terribly familiar with it. I know I like Duke and Ella a lot, and I also like Nina Simone. However, I loathe new jazz: that is, anything that's played on the "Today's Smooth Jazz" FM station. I like Johnny Cash a bunch, too, and some other stuff with country influences, although I can't think of who right now, and that's because of the following reason. I actually listen to music hardly ever. If music has to be on, I have preferences, but if I have the option of silence, I will almost always take it.

But for the record, some bands/artists I do like include the Violent Femmes, the Pixies, Ween, Donovan, Nick Cave, Olivia Tremor Control, T-Rex, the BeeGees, Neutral Milk Hotel, the Apples in Stereo, David Bowie, Billy Idol, Duran Duran, and the Beach Boys.

You can ask as many questions as you want.

In an acute panic sense, I am most afraid of vomit. I actually have a paralyzing case of emetophobia. It's not terribly debilitating, as I can usually avoid puke and puking, but I'd prefer not to be phobic of anything.

In a long-term mortal terror sense, I am most afraid of wasting my potential. I am way too good at letting time pass idly, at getting older but not much wiser, at putting off till tomorrow what I should have done today, etc. This is something I am working toward improving, because my lack of progress is starting to bother me.

    1. I hope we get to meet soon! Now that my best friend has moved away from Key West, I have less of a reason to go there, and no free place to stay when I do But I'll keep you updated on my southbound travels. I go to Miami once a year or so with my roommate, and I will definitely PM you the next time that happens.

    2. I would definitely choose #1. I like kids, and I would like to have some, but I'm worried about my capacity for effective and sane parenting as it is, so not being able to have children or adopt would be kind of a relief (I mean, it would be sad too, but it's a decision I wouldn't mind being made for me, you know?). Having a stable partnership is very important to me. In this scenario, could I have foster children and a ton of pets? Because then that would be quite perfect.

    3. If I could pick one place to go in the world... well, it depends upon the time of year, and the broadness of your definition of "place." If I must travel in the winter, I'd like to go to Australia. If summer, Alaska. If I can travel whenever and your definition of "place" is very open, then you can just fly me to Southeast Asia somewhere, Thailand or Vietnam, and I'll make my own way around, and come back when I'm good and ready.

Wow, I don't think I've ever been called high-profile before. Am I really? Is that a good thing? Eek and thanks. Or eek and shut up. One or the other.

My user name is taken from the T-Rex song "Bang a Gong." It's one of my favorite songs, as well as the first song I ever stripped to. Here is a link to the lyrics:

As you will read, it is very sexy and basically describes me perfectly, even though it was authored a decade or so before I was born.

Lyra, your first question may generate a much darker answer than you were probably anticipating-- I hope that's okay with you. If I could change one thing about myself, I would completely eliminate my tendency toward clinical depression. I don't talk much about it here, but I actually struggle with depression every day. I take medication; I have for years, and I could not function normally without it. As it is, I don't function "normally" per se. I know that many people on this board find me charming and quirky, but I am a rather frustrating person to spend a lot of time with, as my underlying self-doubt and resignation colors a great deal of my behavior.

My first response would be plants, but since I don't think I could literally live in a world without plants, I'm going to take that as a freebie. So my real answer is soap. I could not live without soap. It is really important to me, and I love it. Just today I washed my hands in like 6 or 7 different bathrooms, and lathered my cat. That's how much I love soap.

How long will it take you to relocate and come live with me?

    No, seriously.

    Oh, I can't ask that?

    Damn.

You're amazing, then. That is all.

    Congrats Teef! This'll be fun.

    My questions for you.

    - Do you have any annoying bad habits you wish you could stop/get rid of?

    - What was the most embarassing moment in your life?

    - Did you have a childhood nemesis at all?

    - And I just have to ask, of course... What was your worst sexual experience?

Wow, I don't think I've ever been called high-profile before. Am I really? Is that a good thing? Eek and thanks. Or eek and shut up. One or the other.

My user name is taken from the T-Rex song "Bang a Gong." It's one of my favorite songs, as well as the first song I ever stripped to. Here is a link to the lyrics:

OK, here's a question for you--have you heard the kickass Power Station remake of "Bang A Gong", called "Get It On"? If you haven't, you need to, though you might still prefer the original. I like both, but use the Power Station at work.

Have you listened to Miles Davis (the jazz thing)? Billie Holiday?

I wouldn't say I'm phobic of throwing up, but damned near it--I'll do anything to avoid it, no matter how bad I feel, or how much better I would feel if I went ahead and got it over with. I cannot conceive of how bulimic (SP? I'm very tired from work and all that wine last night, lol) people can possibly do what they do!

I would say you are very high profile considering how few posts you have--not that you haven't posted much, but you are very well known considering the amount of posts anyway. But I myself didn't know much about you, compared to some of the people I am close with who asked me questions.

I hope that clarifies the question, FBR, lol! But you must admit she is a good choice, and deserves it...

Thank you! I think you rule. Unfortunately, I need to keep my location coastal. I like mountains okay, but I can't stand to be away from the water. Even if I can't see the water, it's important to me to know it's there. So while I'd be willing to visit the fine state of Oklahoma, I regret that I cannot move there. Consolation beanie?

Gosh, I really wish I could quit biting my nails. I suppose I'd also like to quit smoking, but the thing is, I know I could quit smoking if I put my mind to it, whereas I do not think I have the power to stop biting my nails. My mom says I've been chewing them off ever since I had teeth. My nails are pretty gnarley. It's one of the more uncute things about me.

I can't think of a single outstandingly embarassing moment. I don't get really embarassed easily, despite the fact that I make a fool of myself regularly. Or maybe because of it, who knows. I have a very high threshold for humiliation... I kind of have to, just to get through the day.

I don't think I had a childhood nemesis. I was a pretty peaceable kid, but I'd be a shit sometimes in order to impress my friends and like, beat up on the smelly new student or something. I did have an imaginary friend, though. Her name was Narata, and she was a fruit bat with two long blonde Swiss Miss-style braids. She moved to Queens from California and took up residence in my closet.

My truly worst sexual experiences all involved assault, coercion, or abuse of some form. I unfortunately don't have a "worst" story that's very funny. I will share one horrible story, because I'm sure there's some twisted humor in it somewhere, but it's pretty fucked up, so brace yourself...

In a moment of self-loathing, and against my better judgement, I met a guy off Craigslist. He was older than me, much older than I usually date, and I wasn't attracted to him at all, but I make very poor choices sometimes, and this was one of them (I'm working on improving this habit. It's really only brought me unhappiness). Anyway we went out to lunch... he tried to take me to Waffle House, but I talked him up to taking me to a slightly more decent diner, and then we went back to his place. Gross things to which he wasn't entitled ensued, fellatio was performed, and, somewhat disgusted with myself, I said goodbye and made my way to the door. As I was leaving, he said he had put something in my cigarette case for me. I inwardly cringed, assuming it was a business card or something else that would indicate he'd like to see me again, so I just thanked him and left. When I got to my car, I opened my cigarette case because I was curious to see what it was. And he had given me $40. I cried.

I have not heard the remake in question, but now I'd like to.

I can't recall if I like Miles Davis, but I like Billie Holiday.

Hmmm... well, I'd like to go back in time to when there were sea monsters. It would be cool if I could somehow also transport some kind of easy-to-operate more-or-less-fail-safe one-man submarine so I could actually see the monsters. I'd say I'd take some scuba gear, but it's not safe to dive without a buddy, and anyway I don't want to get eaten.

In earnest, I'd like to go back to about 1999 and do the beginning of my adult life over again. I have done some very stupid things, wasteful things, compromising things, and I'd like a second chance. I know that might mess up the quantum time-space whatnot, and I risk not being the person I am today, but sometimes I think that might be all right. This has nothing to do with stripping, by the way. It mostly has to do with people I should have broken up with waaaay sooner, or opportunities I should have taken, or stuff I should have stood up for, things like that. I guess I'd just like to go back in time knowing what I know now. Heh, wouldn't we all like that.
Drought was over. Where was I? Drinks were on the house.
For mixers, my love, you'd poured--what?--even the rain.
