    Default Should I go back to the Dr? (long, but please read)

    On the 27th of September (almost 2 weeks ago) I went to PP with UTI symptoms. They did a urine test and said I had a high white blood cell count, and that the symptoms sounded exactly like a UTI, so they sent my urine to the lab and gave me some antibiotic to treat the UTI. They said if the urine culture showed anything other than a UTI, they would call me and let me know. No call was received, so I assumed the diagnoses was confirmed.

    I'm pretty sure it is a UTI because I get them a lot and they agreed. They gave me a 7 day antibiotic and I went home.

    Well, I've been done with the meds since Thursday morning, and I'm still getting frequency, burning, etc., although they aren't as bad as when I initially went to PP. I know sometimes it takes a few days for the illness to clear up even after you're done with the antibiotics, so I didn't automatically get concerned. However I am getting up 4 times a night to pee, and it's not even a lot, even though it feels like a full bladder, and my sleep is sucking.

    How much longer should I wait for the UTI to go away before going back to the clinic to go for another round of antibiotics? I know since I have recurring ones, I might very well and have needed two rounds before.

    I'd call them now. You may just have a particularly resistant UTI and need another round of antibiotics

    I've had reoccuring ones as well. You very well might be resistant to the anti-biotic they gave you. I'd go back since the symptoms are still present. If the antibiotic was doing it's job you'd be feeling a lot better by day three at least. Here are a few things you can do to prevent reoccurance.

    Take cranberry supplements by mouth. The AZO brand is the best but generic will do. Drinking the juice I've heard is even more helpful than taking the supplement if you can stomach it. You can get lite cranberry juice.

    Always urinate before and after sex, that includes oral sex.

    Always wipe from front to back.

    Wear cotton panties, not thongs or nylon.

    Use unscented tampons, soap and laundry detergent.

    Avoid baths, take showers instead.

    You may even have to resort to taking one antibiotic immediately following sex to avoid infections.

    If you use condoms don't get the ones with spermicide.

    I know this seems like a lot but I have had 6 UTI's this year. I hope you get better.

    Wow, thanks Green, great info!

    And thank you to other ladies. Another question though: does anyone know where to get acidophilus cheaper? I used to get it at the health food store, but had to stop buying it because 90 capsules were like $25! I need recommendations for online because I live up in the mountains, so no health food store up here (I have to drive 70 miles south to get to a fricken Petsmart!)

    Puritans Pride has it for about $3 a bottle:

    I've been to a urologist. He wanted to do a cystoscopy, which involved being cathed, so I refused. Unless it's an emergency, I will not be cathed. It hurt more than anything I can remember.

    Oh yeah, and BTW LJ, I can't see a urologist anyways with no health insurance.

    Yeah, I had a cystoscopy as well. After having it, even though they found nothing, I stopped getting UTI's. Call the dr., you probably need different antibiotics.

    These are the strains that your capsules should have:

    * Lactobacillus plantarum Lactobacillus brevis
    * Bifidobacterium bifidum Lactobacillus salivarius
    * Bifidobacterium lactis Lactobacillus acidophilus
    * Lactobacillus rhamnosus Bacillus subtilis
    * Bifidobacterium breve Lactobacillus paracasei
    * Lactobacillus casei Bifidobacterium longum

    Also, I know that you cannot spend a lot of money, however, look at it this way:

    When you buy the cheaper brands, they are sometimes in pill form. The pills are immediately dissolved in your stomach and only about 5% of the full strains are able to survive to make it into your intestines. Getting something that is fully coated (capsule) has been proven to survive almost 100% in the stomach to make it into the intestines.

    So, while the one form may be cheaper, the other form is more effective.

    Just something to keep in mind.

    Oh, btw...the cranberry that you should be drinking should be UNSWEETENED. The sugar in any other juice will just exacerbate your UTI.

    Go back to the doctor.

    The link that CK gave you does have inexpensive acidophilus...however, they only contain 2-3 of the needed strains for most effective results.

    In lieu of a cystoscopy you might consider an IVP (Intravenous pylogram). Its a dye study which shows how your kidneys empty. If you had for example, a UPJ (ureteropelvic junction - where ureter hooks up to kidney) obstruction it would be seen. Totally non invasive.

    I'd call your doc and ask if they sent a "sensitivity" as well as a culture of your urine. Most labs will tell you how sensitive your bug is to a range of antibiotics. It may not be a weird bug but it might be more sensitive to say bactrim than cipro for example.

    Finally, If you don't take the whole course of the antibiotic you might be continuing to have sub-clinical infections and not be feeling symptoms - take all the antibiotics regardless of how good you feel.

    I had a REALLY bad uti and finshed the pills but the symptoms were still there, they gave me another dose of the pills and it cleared up in just a few more days. Sometimes they are angry lil buggers that don't want to be treated.
    They also gave me no problems with another dose, I don't see why they should if the problem persists.

    The thing is, I'm confused. I had a high white cell count, so they figured that was enough paired with my symptoms to treat me for a UTI, but my urine had no bacteria in it.

    My syptoms seemed to calm down a bit while I was on the ABs, but now all of a sudden they're getting bad again.

    Feeling faint
    Fatigue
    Nausea
    Frequency
    Burning (sometimes it's in my bladder, but not when I pee.)
    Every once in a while my whole lower abdomen will have sharp pains, but they're gone in a minute

    Right now the burning is the worst. I feel like I have a fire on my left side. I thought kidneys were towards my back and not the front, but this radiating burning is in my left lower abdomen. It radiates all the way up parallel to my navel in my left side.

    Anyone have anything I can suggest to PP when I go tomorrow? They didn't even do a pelvic exam last time, just a urine sample, which they must have done a dipstick and then sent it off to the lab.

    When you go to your doc, he/she should probably work you up for pelvic inflammatory diseases.

    I googled that and it said it was an STD. Um, I'm married and we only have sex with each other...plus I read that it is usually caused by chlamydia or gonorrhea, neither of which I tested positive for.

    I also don't have weird discharge, painful urination, or irregular bleeding.

    You are describing symptoms of interstitial cystitis. Interstitial cystitis is a noninfectious inflammation of the bladder wall. The exact cause is not clearly understood. Treatments are varied and debatable...what works for one does not always work for another. If you can, you might reconsider cystoscopy. It will help the docs get a better handle on your diagnosis. Also, during cystoscopy, your bladder is distended with water and that distention usually gives women relief for quite a period of time. Crap. I was afraid of that. Guess I won't know for sure until I get health insurance. Thanks BD. I saw a forum for IC sufferers, guess I'll mosey on over there...

    Oh BD, is it normal for IC to just... appear out of nowhere? This all started like only a couple months ago.

    More technical, more information. Information is always good. I believe it can appear out of nowhere. Like any chronic problem. it can have flare ups and relapses.

    PID isn't always caused by an STD. No one is judging you, its just a possibility. I had PID before (NOT from STD) and those symptoms do not sound the same.

    Yeah, call them asap and let them know. Untreated, a UTI can cause serious problems.

    Good luck hon. Knock on wood, I have never had one but I can only imagine the pain.
