Default ladies with IUDs--can you feel it?

I'm considering getting one, since I've been to 5 places so far and no one will agree to give me a tubal ligation. (suposedly I'm "too young" and "might change my mind." assholes. )

Anyway, the main thing I'm worried about is...I know they say you can't feel it, but....really?? I find that hard to believe, esp. since I have a really small frame/bone structure. (And I practice contortion--I find it especially hard to believe I wouldn't feel twinges/pain from it when I'm folding myself in half around there. )

Those of you that have either type of IUD...do you really not know it's there? Does it ever bother you?

Also...I'm leaning towards getting the copper one, b/c hormones turn me into a depressed fat zombie; I can't even use the ring (which supposedly is a low dose) or low-dose pills without feeling like death. Would Mirena have the same effect, or is there some kind of difference?

I use the Mirena and I never feel it. Ever. The hormones are pretty local so it might work out in your favor.

I use the paraguard. I normally never feel it. Although recently my big husband and my big self had some big sex and things got bumped around, so I felt it then. But truly that was a fluke!

I've had mine in since my son was born &years ago, I took it out to try the pill for a wee bit, and ran right back to my IUD.

I really really like it. And they do come in different sizes. I highly reccomend it.

I have the merena and i can't feel anything at all. My boyfriend said at first he could feel the string a little, but they soften up pretty quick. I LOVE my IUD, I recommend it to everyone and everyone that I know that has one say they love it too. GL

I have it, and i am a contortionist. I don't feel it from bending. Only a little during sex sometimes, but that also depends on the usual factors, foreplay, lubrication, penis size, etc.
Comfy as all hell, barely any periods, no PMS... I'm SOLD!

Grrrr, you girls with your barely any periods and no PMS.... as much as I love my IUD, I totally got screwed in that department! I can't even imagine what I'd be like if I were still on the pill!

Yah..totally bent over on that one... *pout*

    Not to thread jack but...
Does anyone know if Planned Parenthood does them on a sliding scale basis? i have shitty health insurance through my college but of course they won't do it because i'm only 21 and therefore MUST have unsafe sex with everyone.. :: sarcasm:: grrr..okay sorry for the vent.

OP- i hear nothing but great reviews..especially for the Mirena. :-)

Omg... I'm so happy there is a thread on this on here... ever since this past summer I have gone off the pill due to depression... I just couldn't take the lack of sex drive and blahness of life on it! I have vowed never to use birth control with hormones again!

So.... it's good PP will do them... as I have NO health insurance, so sterilization is out of the question for cost reasons mostly (I never want children).

One question I am wondering about: How many of you with them have never had kids? I've heard that if you have never had a pregnancy to term you are like 10x more likely to reject the IUD... I wonder if they would charge you the procedure cost again if you rejected it? (I heard full price it's like 500... hoping PP will give a discount!)

Not to thread jack, but b/c you have so few periods w/an iud do you get really bloated for a long time before you have them?

I think these days, because they have different sizes etc, that the chance of rejection is much lower now.

Carmen, yes, PP will do this for you. It takes some getting used to, but before you know you'll forget it's even in there!

I got mine done at PP with cheapass college health insurance. It was $108. Call your insurance company. They may surprise you, if you clear it ahead of time. (The Mirena is awesomes, btw)

Yes, you're more likely to reject it. 5-20% of women do, and that will usually happen in the first 3 months. Check the string and be prepared to use a backup if it's expelled. Chances are, you'll be fine.

They do?? I went for a consult at PP awhile ago, and they never mentioned that. Details? Do both the copper and Mirena ones come in different sizes?

awesome That was what I was worried about. 99% effective hormone-free birth control for 10 years is a beautiful thing, but still not worth it if it interferes with training.

I had a copper IUD; no one wanted to give me an IUD since I've never been pregnant, since the odds were good I'd expel it. I insisted, and of course I expelled it. I had it for a week or two... my then-husband complained that the string poked him during sex (so every thrust he got a little needly poke), but I didn't feel anything at all except when I reached up to check that the string was in place. When I expelled it I could feel part of it sticking through my cervix, and yeah, that was uncomfortable. Inserting and removing the IUD were both extremely painful for me (I hear it's not that way for everyone). I'd love to get off the pill and its hormones, but the IUD is definitely not the right choice for me at the moment.

String? I had no idea they had strings.

Do you have to have completed a pregnancy to have the lower odds of expelling it? Or just been pregnant?

I've been considering it..just to have one less pill and a bit less pharmecuticals in my body...but I dont think I will. I like being able to control when I get my period by taking the pill continuously...and I dont know any other BC that would let me do that. I cant chance being booked for a shoot and *surprise* ....blood...

    sigh...

Yes, there is a string tied to the end of the IUD, and it hangs down from your cervix. This is so you can check to make sure the IUD is in place (it can become dislodged or expelled without your noticing, which renders it ineffective), and it's so they can remove it later. Unfortunately it also places you at a higher risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (bacteria can be wicked into your uterus via the IUD string), so they only want to give IUD's to women who are in mutually monogamous relationships and at lower risk of STI.

I got the Paraguard almost 2 months ago. I can say the first period after was hurendous and I truly hope what everyone says is true, the cramping lessens and the heavy amount eventually lessen. I don't feel it in there and my baby has said he's never felt the string or anything, but I'm telling you that first period was horrible. Cramping and bleeding equivalent to an early term miscarriage and I bleed for just over week. After that it was fine, however, I am ovulating again, and I'm starting to get a little crampy again. I am hoping this next one isn't as bad as the last, if it's not, it will give me hope that it does get better...lol.

I have Mirena. It's great. I never did well with hormonal birth control, not even the ring, but this one is working out fine. My periods are 3 days of light spotting. No, I can't feel it; although I swore I could the first 2-3 weeks I had it.

I've never been pregnant. I did have trouble finding a doctor at a "low cost" clinic like PP who would insert it. When I got insurance, I easily found a "higher priced" doctor who did it. Since I had not met my deductible, I paid $800.

I have a Mirena. I have never had children and had it put in when I was 30.

I do have to say it hurt like bloody hell going in and then I cramped pretty bad for a day or two afterwards. Then gradually the cramping went away. I also bled nonstop for three months.

But that is all the bad stuff. The good things are that now I never hardly ever get periods. I do not feel it at all. If I squat down to check for it I can feel the string, but that's it. I cannot take any type of birth control pills. They all give me migraines horribly. But I can stand the hormones in the Mirena because they are a very small amount and are directly in the uterus so don't cause the same side effects. I think it's the best form of birth control ever!

I third the Mirena love. The "installation" (my uterine version of a car stereo) was painful, and I did have fairly significant cramping for about a month, but have now had it for 3 years and haven't felt it since.

The aforementioned 'no period' thing is also great.

It's not easy finding a doctor to give you one if you've not had children, but I think that they're gradually becoming more open-minded about it.

I just got a Paraguard about two months ago and I haven't had kids. I don't feel it inside of me. I have had heavier periods and worse cramps, but I was told to expect that. Can't beat it for convenience and lack of hormones.
