    Default why am I gaining weight?

    As you all know, I'm on the SW workout challenge. Here's the thing, I am gaining weight ! I am so confused and frustrated. I cut down on starch, scaled back the alcohol, I'm basically just eating veggie products. Does anyone have any idea why this could be happening?

    If you're not, are you sure you're only eating a reasonable amount of food? Are you only eating when you're hungry and stopping when you're no longer hungry or are you eating more than your body truly wants? You could try keeping a food chart for a few days without changing anything (note on the chart whether or not you ate out of hunger) then review it to see if your eating habits are really what you think they are.

    I would recommend keeping a food journal, and count calories for a few days.

    You said "veggie products". What do you mean by that? If you mean you are eating nothing but fresh, unaltered vegetables, then there's a problem. If you're eating stews, fried veggies, or heavily prepared veggies, you're probably consuming a lot more calories than you think.

    I know before, I was eating this amazing vegetable soup, and I thought I was being so healthy and diet-conscious. When I counted calories though, I was amazed to find the soup had almost 800 calories per serving!

    Are you working out? Muscle weighs more than fat. Best it to go by measurments and how clothes fit - not the scale.

    I second the food journal. Keep track and let us know. Also, if you scale back calories too dramatically, your body may move into "starvation mode" and store every calorie you give it as fat.

    I second starvation mode... especially if you have given in to the temptation of fasting. For like a year and a half I was near-anorexic but eating total junk, then ate healthy kinds of foods but limited my calories to 600 a day at times... but my metabolism had been so slow at that point I didn't lose any (or you could also say ENOUGH for my body dismorphic disordered mind to recognize it) reduced myself to fasting! I am still building back the muscle I lost due to fasting and now my metabolism has sped up again finally! (It's been like 3 months of eating healthy and every day)

    So I guess my moral was cutting calories that low you lose weight (muscle more than fat), but the second you go above what you need to keep living it is stored... as fat... it just makes so much more sense to your mind and body to eat healthy portions when you are hungry of quality whole foods!

    I'm not eating anything fried or cheesy . No butter. I know muscle weighs more than fat, but this just doesn't make sense. Maybe it's the alcohol. I have cut WAY back. I'm puzzled. If I'm gaining weight from trying to get slimmer and fitter, then I'm going to stop trying. I'm so frustrated.

    Are you drinking enough water? You should be drinking about 1/2 your body weight in oz. Your mouth should feel moist (not cottony), your skin should feel soft and "dewey".

    You may also not be working out properly. If you are not doing HIIT, you are most likely not burning enough fat.

    If your foods have too much salt (MSG, etc) in it...that could also be a cause of your slight weight gain.

    But, forget the weight gain...how are your clothes fitting you?

    Im going to suggest getting a thyroid function test. My dad was exercising and eating healthy and was gaining weight and it turned out it was caused by his thyroid not functioning properly. They can do it just with a simple blood test.

    You might just have a case of pre-menstrual bloating. I get that every month myself. It's water weight that comes off once your period arrives.

    8lbs of water weight? And I do drink a TON of water. I had a thyroid test about 6 monthsa ago.

    ^^^ If youre drinking a ton of water and bloated yea - could be that much. Seriously. your body is retaining all youre drinking and the period on top of it.

    I swear there was a thread on this not too long ago - people gaining a lot of weight at period time. I know I gain a about 3 lbs the week before my period. All bloating and water retention.

    I wouldnt worry much until your period is over. You may notice a drastic change in weight.

    It may sound like water weight, PMS thing. I'm usually at 105, but for a week before my cycle starts, I'm around 110 or more. I do EVERYTHING to counter act it: extra B6, evening primrose capsules, OTC diruretics.

    It's just something i deal with

    Also: Alcohol will slow down your metabolism. This has been scientifically proven. On me as well.

    You need to keep a food journal. If you've had your thyroid tested, and you're drinking plenty of water, and you think you're eating healthy...

    You're sabotaging your diet somewhere. Keep a journal and write down everything that you ingest. Everything. Every drop of water, every bite of food, every can of pop. Write it all down. Only then will you be able to look back and see the "non-consequential" things that are adding up and sabotaging your diet.
